3.5 Ordinarily students will be provided with an opportunity to pursue studies in

the field of their specialization/special interests, subject to minimum student

enrollment* and other allied academic considerations decided by the

Management from time to time. The decision of the Management shall be

final & binding upon all students.

1.0 For illustrative purposes the academic structure* of a term has been shown

    below.

2.0 The course(s) to be offered in each of the academic terms will be finalized

and intimated to the student one academic term in advance.

3.0 The number of subjects to be offered and/or the sequence of subjects in a

particular academic term etc are subject to periodic changes based on

Faculty inputs, market trends, experience of previous batches and such other

5.0 PEDAGOGY:5.1 The pedagogy shall be a blend of lectures, case discussions, term papers,

seminars, presentations, projects (both secondary & live). The students are

expected to understand the concepts to be discussed in the session by

reading in advance the study material/prescribed textbooks, analyze and

discuss the case with team mates and then contribute to the class discussion,

    through active participation.

5.2 In a B-School setting, Instructors play the role of enablers and facilatators

in the students learning process. Surveys & Studies suggest that perhaps

only a quarter of the learning process comes from the Instructor and the rest

from the students own application, research and peer-based learning. Hence

the onus is on the student to make sure that (s)he puts in the required efforts

to derive as much value as possible from the teaching-learning process.

9.0 NORM FOR PROGRESSION/ PROMOTION FROM ONE ACADEMIC TERM TO

    ANOTHER:

9.1 In order to qualify for progression/promotion from one academic term to the

next term viz., term-I to term II; term II to term III and so on, a student has to

score a minimum Grade Point Average (GPA) of 5.50 in each and every

    academic term.

9.2 In the event a student fails to obtain the requisite GPA, then (s)he will

ordinarily not qualify for promotion to the next term unless and until (s)he

fulfill the requirements under the Academic Remedial Programme (ARP) and

    makes good the academic deficit.

9.3 The details of the Academic Remedial Programme (ARP) have been dealt with

    in a separate section.

    10.0 ACADEMIC REMEDIAL PROGRAMME (ARP):

    10.1 BACKGROUND:

Remedial education is education which is designed to bring students, who are

lagging behind, up to the level of academic achievement realized by the peer

    group.

There are a large number of reason(s) why a student might need remedial

    education. Some of them include:

Some students had attended Schools / Colleges of poor quality and

    didnt receive adequate grounding in certain subjects;

Some students may have been transferred in and out of schools or

missed schools due to parental pressures and/or problems and/or

    other family compulsions;

Frequent ill-health;Some students have learning disorders and others issues which

    impairs their ability to learn.

During the Academic Remedial Programme, the Instructor will attempt to

bring such students up to speed, so that they have skills comparable to those

    of their peers.

For the present, there shall be 4(four) components of the Academic Remedial

    Programme. These include:

    10.1.1 REPEAT A COURSE.

    10.1.2 MAKE-UP TEST.

    10.1.3 GRADE IMPROVEMENT TEST.

    10.1.4 SHORTAGE OF ATTENDANCE.

    10.2 REPEAT A COURSE:

10.2.1 A student who receives a grade of F in any subject has to necessarily

    repeat the course.

10.2.2 The said course will be in addition to all the existing courses

scheduled in the current academic term and shall entail a fee

payment of Rs. 9000/- (Rupees Nine thousand only) per subject.

10.2.3 A student cannot, under any circumstances, carry a grade F in the

grade sheet. In effect, should a student secure a grade F in term-I,

then (s)he should repeat the course in term II itself and clear theexamination along with the other subjects of term-II. Under no

circumstances, can the grade F be carried forward to term-III.

10.2.4 A student who receives a grade D in any subject is well advised to

repeat the course to ensure that his/her GPA in the academic term

does not fall below the prescribed norm for progression/promotion

from one academic term to another.

    10.3 MAKE-UP TEST:

10.3.1 A student who secures a grade of B- or less in any subject could

consider a make-up test purely on a voluntary basis. The result of the

make-up test will only replace the grade of the end term examination

component. The evaluation of other components will, however, remain

    unchanged.

10.3.2 Further, only one make-up opportunity per subject will be given in one

academic term. The fee for make-up test will be Rs. 3500/- (Rupees

Three thousand five hundred only) per subject.

10.3.3 The make-up test may be in the form of a written Examination and/

Viva-voce and/or Term paper and/or Assignment and/or Seminar. The mode shall be discussed and decided by the Academic

Coordinator in consultation with the concerned Faculty member.

10.3.4 In case of a make-up test, the final result of the subject will be

dropped by one level viz., if the final grade is C+, then a grade C will

    be awarded.

    10.4 GRADE IMPROVEMENT TEST:

10.4.1 During the two year programme, it is plausible that a student believes

that due to circumstances beyond his/her control, his/her academic

proficiency level in a certain subject could not be fully demonstrated /

exploited and therefore, believes that (s)he should be afforded yet

    another opportunity to demonstrate.

10.4.2 Keeping in mind the aforesaid set of considerations and the ambitious

academic goals & aspirations that students pursuing professional

education set for themselves, the Acharya School of Management has

    introduced the Grade Improvement test.

10.4.3 It shall be explicitly understood that a student will be afforded only 2

(two) opportunities for Grade Improvement during the course of the

entire two year programme. The first opportunity shall be given in thefirst year (a student can avail any time between the Ist & IVth

trimester). The second & final opportunity shall be given in the second

year (a student can avail any time from the Vth trimester onwards).

demonstration of academic commitment and/or scholarship,and/or professional conduct, and/or attendance, and/or other

depth knowledge and/or learn a new skill and/or to upgrade an existing skill

and/or use an Audit course as a pathway to develop professional interest in a

    particular domain.

12.2 The duration of Audit course(s) shall be of the same duration as a credit-

based course. It shall be viewed as an enrichment course and an opportunity

13.1 Students generally have a positive frame of mind and approach all academic

related requirements with confidence, decisiveness and a rational outlook,

    which eventually leads to success.

13.2 However, at times, a few students experience / demonstrate symptoms such

    14.0 STUDENT DEVELOPMENT INITIATIVES:-

14.1 Life at the Acharya School of Management is a fine balance of fun and study.

The vibrant Campus life affects the after-class and quality of living

experience significantly. Our advice to all incoming students is: learn the

fine art of being settled, managing the academic curriculum and then plunge

into extra/co-curricular activities. The best guide is your Faculty Mentor

    assigned by the Academic Coordinator.

14.2 The environment and culture of the Acharya School of Management is gearedto handle students with:

    - Dramatically different beliefs and philosophies;

    - Widely divergent expectations;- A high focus on academics, conservative and middle-of-the-road

    approach to cultural activities;

    - Different personalities and orientations;

    and

    - adventuresome spirit.

14.3 Under the overall guidance, supervision & mentorship of the Faculty Mentors,

the extra/ co-curricular activities are designed, structured, aligned to and

integrated with the academic framework. The level of independence

associated with the conduct of the extra/co-curricular activities is quite

amazing. But at times, the whole excitement of being independent can bedampened by an overwhelming sense of ownership & responsibility (let us

gently remind ourselves that students are under training).

14.4 Each of the Programmes & activities have a specific timeline, learning

objectives, desirable and measurable outcomes, ensures high student

participation and requires oodles of creative energy round the year. The

events are successful, students are happy and the learning is quite diverse:

expect the unexpected, learn about the stages of cultural adjustment,

managerial skills, language proficiency and the like.

14.5 Students at the Acharya School of Management enjoy themselves, are helpedto adjust socially and this collectively impacts their overall academic

performance positively. There are plenty of stress busters and culture shock

relievers on Campus to get away from the mundane academic routine. Hobby

Societies, volunteer services, and sports are some of them.

    15.0 STUDENTS MENTORING PROGRAMME:-

15.1 Mentoring has become a necessity. Competitive pressures create performance

anxiety, inability to cope with the workload, emotional imbalances and at

times, behavioural problems too. In recognition of this, an Institutionalized

support system has been created that is well networked to recognize signs

necessitating Mentoring The fulcrum of the Mentoring Programme is the

Faculty member who brings his/her rich and vast knowledge and an

    unflinching commitment to the process.

15.2 Some of the areas where Mentoring has greatly benefited the students include:

    - Building on individual strengths and overcoming weaknesses;

    - Character Building;

    - Personality Development;

    - Choice of functional specialization & Career planning;

    - Value conflicts;

    - Resolving academic, personal and social issues.

    - Academic improvement.

15.3 The Acharya School of Management shall implement the mentoring

programme through appropriate mechanisms which shall be explained to the

    students.

15.4 The students are well-advised to utilize the mentoring opportunity and build

    upon their professional strengths.

16.0 STRATEGIC TIE-UPSWITH NGOS FOR CSR INITIATIVES:-

16.1 In keeping with the overall aims and objectives of the PGDM Programme i.e.

facilitate the integration of management theory with prevalent competitive

business practices as well as to promote the development of leadership and

entrepreneurial abilities of the students, we, at the Acharya School of

Management have forged strategic tie-ups with various NGOs for CSR

initiatives. Under these initiatives, a student shall be exposed to field

level/community based learning initiatives-which has been innovatively

intertwined and buttressed with contemporary academic inputs within the

evolving academic framework and designed to stimulate classroom learning.

16.2 The learning initiatives, will provide students an Institutional platform to

engage in socially meaningful and relevant projects. This will expose them to

grass root level problems and challenges in the social sector.

16.3 We believe that our students will, over a period of time, derive immense

benefits through these unique learning initiatives apart from providing

    abundant opportunities for self-development.

16.4 Given the rapidly changing educational landscape especially in B-Schools in

the Country, the Acharya School of Management reserves the absolute right

to engage with an NGO and the nature of engagement may entail a

commitment on the part of a student.

16.5 The nature of engagement can either be (a) participation in an awareness

programme (b) undertaking live projects (c) undertaking volunteering service

    (d) an external engagement viz outside the Campus and/or the city of

    Bangalore.

16.6 In all such cases, the student shall, in keeping with the goals & objects of the

course bear all related expenditure in the nature of travel, boarding & lodging

    and other incidental expenses.

16.7 The Acharya School of Management shall, wherever practical & plausible,

    support the student endeavours.

    17.0 CO-CURRICULAR AND EXTRA-CURRICULAR ACTIVITIES:

17.1 Students pursuing professional courses such as PGDM are expected and

well-advised to participate in Management fests & competitions conductedby the Acharya School of Management and other reputed B-Schools across

the Country, with a view to develop their personality, hone their knowledge &

skill sets and play the role of brand ambassadors of the School.

17.2 It is advisable that students take an active part in the conduct of all Co and

Extra curricular activities in order to develop their leadership roles &

    responsibilities and inculcate values.

17.3 No waivers will be granted on the minimum attendance norms for attending

conferences, management fests, seminars, sports events etc., even if the

    student is representing the School.

17.4 Whereas the School shall nominate students for inter B-School fests &

competitions and pay the registration fees at other times, the students may

also elect to participate in these Forums, Workshops & Seminars on a purely

voluntary basis and the students shall subscribe to all the related

    expenditure.

    18.0 BUSINESS SOFT SKILLS:

18.1 According to Wikipedia, soft skills is a sociological term which refers to thecluster of personality traits, social graces, ability with language, personalhabits, friendliness and optimism that mark people to varying degrees. Softskills complement the hard skills which are the technical requirements of a

job. As businesses become increasingly globalized and adapts to shiftingparadigms in thought and practice, the focus on soft skills has become morepronounced and brighter.

18.2 We at the Acharya School of Management offer a basket of soft skill courses

(across all the academic terms and as an integral part of the academic

    curriculum) with a four-fold objective:

    One : to create awareness of cultural practices followed across the globe;

Two : to develop the ability to make mature decisions, understand what to

    and how to communicate sensitively;

Three : to enable students understand & acquire specific skills required in

the contemporary work environment viz., working under pressure,

multitasking, strong work ethics, positive attitude, ability to accept

    & learn from criticism etc.

Four : to build greater self confidence, esteem and fluency of expression.

18.3 The Business Soft Skill courses may either be credit or non-credit bearing

depending upon the focus area of the course and/or the number of courses

in an academic term and/or the progression of the Academic term and/or

    any other programme based considerations.

19.0 INDUSTRY INTERNSHIP PROGRAMME (IIP) :-

19.1 Upon successful completion of the course work and subject to the fulfillment

of the stipulated academic norms and/or cut offs, in each of the academic

terms a student shall be required to carry out an internship project of a

minimum duration of 12 weeks in a corporate environment. Management

education being practice oriented, it is necessary that each student is

afforded adequate opportunities to apply the concepts learnt in the class

room under simulated conditions to real time applications.

19.2 The Internship project will be scheduled appropriately in the programme

    depending upon:

    (a) industry preparedness and/or prevailing market conditions;

    (b) feedback of the Faculty as to the student preparedness;

    and

    (c) any other compelling institutional and/or environmental

    considerations.

Detailed guidelines shall be given to the students one academic term inadvance.

19.3 The Management of the Acharya School of Management shall decide and

intimate the schedule of the Internship programme one academic term in

advance. The decision of the Management shall be find and building upon allconcerned.

19.4 Industry Internship Programme (IIP) is a conscious effort to integrate

management education to the changing realities of the corporate world.

Industry Internship Programme is the vehicle through which a student can

meaningfully apply methods, approaches and techniques learnt in the class

    room to real life situation.

19.5 The traditional pedagogy may not suffice to give the best results. Increasingly,

survey findings reveal that there is little OR no fit between the B-School

curriculum and the requirements of the Corporate and also there is no fit

between the aspirations of B-School students and the expectations of the

Corporates who recruit them. Therefore, an apprenticeship period in a real

life situation helps the Graduates to achieve handson-training in execution

and delivery of expected results. The constant interaction with the Industry

Mentor [from the organization in which the student interns] and the Faculty

Mentor leads to a healthy synthesis of practical experience with the

theoretical inputs. A constant upgradation & updation of curriculum by the

Faculty to match the real needs then becomes a proactive process. The

Faculty too, benefits through interaction with the corporate community.

19.6 The method ensures a continuous evaluation of the student interns thorougha comprehensive grade sheet of many of the latent talents like professional

judgment, data handling and analysis, decision making abilities, initiative,

leadership and team building approaches etc. that may not be entirely

visible during the classroom simulations. The industry has the benefit of

direct access to expertise that can be monitored and evaluated by them over a

period. There is value addition as projects relevant to the industry are

executed with the help of trained graduates without additional cost to the

Company. The industry has the opportunity to evaluate and recruit the

intern at the end of the programme, as the intern would have completed all

the requirements of the PGDM Programme.

19.7 The IIP would be evaluated and credits assigned towards the PGDM Diploma.

20.0 REQUIREMENT OF CUMULATIVE GRADE POINT AVERAGE (CGPA) FORPROMOTION FROM THE YEAR-I TO YEAR- II :

20.1 It shall be clearly understood that promotion from year-I to year-II of the

    PGDM programme is NOT automatic.

20.2 In order to qualify for promotion from year-I to year-II, a student must score a

minimum Cumulative Grade Point Average (CGPA) of 5.75 at the end of Term-

    IV.

20.3 It shall be made explicitly clear that students who do not fulfill the required

academic cut off / norms at the end of term-IV shall be detained in year-I and

shall be required to repeat all the academic terms afresh.

21.0 GRADES FOR AWARD OF POST GRADUATE DIPLOMA IN MANAGEMENT (PGDM):

21.1 For successful completion of the two year full time PGDM programme and

award of the Diploma, a student has to score a minimum Cumulative Grade

Point Average (CGPA) of 6.75 at the close of the two year programme.

21.2 In addition, a student must fulfill the following two conditions:

    21.2.1 no major complaints of misconduct;

21.2.2 the prescribed Grade Point Average (GPA) in each of the academic

terms as stated in the preceding sections.

    22.0 PLACEMENT:

22.1 The Placement Cell of the Acharya Institutes shall make every effort to place

the graduating students in suitable positions in the Industry, commensurate

with their academic standing and/or consistent academic background

    and/or experience and/or professional/domain knowledge competence as

demonstrated by professional certification programmes /courses.

22.2 In a B-School setting, the Placement Committee plays a significant role in

steering the placement activities. PGDM students are well-advised to

constitute a Committee and start the placement related activities for the

batch at least one year in advance for optimal results. Needless to mention,

the Placement Committee shall be given all the support & assistance.

23.0 REVIEW OF STUDENT HAND BOOK:

The Acharya School of Management reserves the absolute right to introduce and/or

amend and/or revoke and/or alter any of the rules, regulations & guidelines at any

time in the larger interest of all the stakeholders in general and the student

community in particular without making a reference to any Authority. The decision
