What is the reason you get out of bed in the morning? This morning was the first morning I can

remember, that I didn’t open my eyes and feel that sadness… I thought the person who wrote that note had an answer for me…

That little bit of sadness in the mornings you spoke of? I think I know what that is. Perhaps you are not doing what you’re supposed to be doing.

- M. Night Shyamalan’s film Unbreakable

Creating an Ideal Climate

Like any living organism, your child’s brain requires an ideal climate uniquely suited to the specific growing conditions required by the neuron “seeds”.

Research concurs five experiential conditions must be present in an activity for the neurons planted in your child’s brain to grow and make connections.

Page 15: Student finding your story

STORY Strengths - What abilities come easily for you?

Topics – What people, places or things excite and engage you?

Optimal Conditions – Pine trees need different soil than oak trees. A cactus thrives in different conditions than a rosebush. What about the soil and environment of your child? Some love to be noticed. Others prefer to hide in the crowd. Some relish deadlines. Others need ample preparation and help. Some do well taking tests. Others excel with the subject, but stumble through exams.

Relationship – Do you prefer to follow others or lead, work collaboratively or independently , read the manual or figure things out by yourself? Don’t characterize loaners as aloof or crowd seekers as arrogant. They may be living out their story.

YES! – Moments where you feel, I have been made for this!! What brings you intrinsic meaning, fulfillment and satisfaction in life? Do you love the journey or the goal? Do you like to keep things straight or straighten things out? What thrills one person may incite another.

My Summary • Event #1: Public Speaking Competitions with 4-H

• Details: Not every ten year old would enjoy speaking to others but from a young age I excelled in challenges and working under pressure. I didn’t mind writing and rehearsing my speech but nothing compared to the thrill and challenge of performing to a live audience. My favorite part was the impromptu speech, where each contestant was given a topic and had two minutes to write, rehearse and then deliver a speech on this topic.

• What felt most satisfying to you? I won many competitions but the highlight of this experience was the thrill ofexpressing myself to others through public speaking.

Page 24: Student finding your story

My Summary• Event #2: Making A Movie in Junior High• Details: My friends and I decided to try creating movies in

junior high. I enjoyed writing scripts and brainstormingideas for epic movie plots. Though I ensured every individual was included in this process, I took the lead in formulating and writing the scripts. I created different roles for each individual based on their specific skills and talents. Though I had a natural gift for editing and using special effects to create entertaining movies, my passion was acting and being in the center of the action.

• What felt most satisfying to you? Working with others to create something that expresses who I am to inspire others.

Page 25: Student finding your story

My Summary Con’t• Event #3: Goalkeeper for Elite Soccer Team• Details: Though many players are scared of the added pressure of the

goalkeeper position, the pressure inspired me to live up to my potential. I liked playing goalkeeper because you are always on the field and in the action. Additionally I had to coordinate, organize and make difficult decisions under pressure. The goal keeper is the on field coach because he is responsible to communicate to players reminding them where to be on the field and what opponent player they should be covering. The goalkeeper is the leader and spokesperson of the team, always talking and guiding the rest of the players on the field.

• What felt most satisfying to you? We were a very successful team but the most rewarding feeling was derived from working under pressure with a group of unified individuals pursuing a common goal. It was satisfying to make a substantial contribution to each game’s victory through my performance on the field and the verbal guidance and encouragement I provided to my players throughout the game.

Page 26: Student finding your story

My Summary Con’t• Example #4: Coach of Soccer Team

• Details: I was such a strong leader in my final season as a goal keeper the coaches asked me to return as a coach. I was the youngest coach in the history of the league and excelled at this challenge. Leading individuals only a year younger than myself required competence, confidence and leadership skills. I commanded respect and motivated the players so effectively that I was promoted to head coach. I thrived in my new role, possessing more influence and responsibility to make a greater contribution to the team’s success. I structured the environment by planning and preparing our defensive and offensive schemes for each game to ensure that our team had the best chance to win. A major ingredient of our success was found in my ability to indentify the strengths of every individual and place them in roles and situations that would best contribute to our team’s success. My favorite moments were speaking pregame speeches to motivate and focus my players for each game. During the games I would constantly encourage my players from the bench to focus on playing their game (not getting distracted by other players or referees) and maintain a positive attitude knowing that we will be successful in this game. From a goalkeeper to coach, I appreciated having a greater influence on the lives of each player on my team.

• What felt most satisfying to you? We were a very successful team achieving provincials both seasons but the most rewarding feeling was witnessing each player improve their skills, ability and motivation. The icing on the cake was seeing how my beliefs and positive attitude impacted every player to become a better person.

Page 27: Student finding your story

My Summary Con’t• Example #5: Becoming a School Counselor

• Details: I was very excited to be provided the opportunity to help and supportparents and students. I thrive in a position where I am meeting needs and able to take initiate. The conditions of challenge and responsibility required me to do something new and create an interactive home education program to provide home educators with greater opportunities for their children. I quickly learned the key to success is collaborating with parents and students to planactivities that are meaningful and interesting to them. Planning the events required creativity and ingenuity but the most rewarding experiences were found in interacting with parents and students at the events.

• What felt most satisfying to you? Serving students and parents to enable every family to provide the most holistic education for their children. It is an honor to positively influence every parent and student I come into contact with.
