Letter of Motivation
Please indicate why you want to study at Maastricht University School of Business and Economics (SBE).
• What personal experiences in the last 5 years motivate you to choose for our BSc
International Business at Maastricht University? Please use maximum 250 words.
My desire to study in the IB program represents a natural extension of my educational and
extra curricular pursuits over the past five years. I chose a path that allowed me to develop a
strong multicultural background in languages and business, and I am now prepared to enter an
international business program that will encompass and synthesize these two disciplines.
During my Future Business Leaders of America competitions, I developed competent and
creative business strategies. My first competition in Sports Management changed my
perspective on teamwork. Egos clashed, and we lacked a team concept and as a result, we lost.
This year, after committing my team to weekly feedback sessions, our attitudes have changed.
It earned us a first place in Banking and Financial Systems on a regional level and a podium
win at States. From this experience, I learned to be flexible and assertive, and to look for
alternative ways to contribute to team-orientated situations. Because I posses an innate ability
to motivate people, I knew that I was an integral part of the team.
Through founding our high school sailing team, leading the Ward Melville Investment Club,
studying at the German Saturday School, and after volunteering and traveling with a service
group in Armenia last summer, I learned that I truly enjoy working in a team, both as a leader
and as a contributing member. The PBL method of instruction at UM is a perfect fit with all
these defining experiences.

• What future skills and competencies would you expect to develop as a preparation for your professional career? Please use maximum 250 words.
In the IB program I plan to focus my studies on the emerging markets, in particular Armenia, a
country that presents the convergence of vast opportunity and structural challenges that
characterize the modern Middle East.
Over the last two years, I have progressively deepened my knowledge about Armenia through
creating an awareness project in high school. I recently spent a month volunteering and
traveling in Armenia with the service group Armenian General Benevolent Union. I truly
enjoyed exploring my Armenian heritage, the dialogue with my fellow international high
school volunteers and working alongside the Armenian construction teams of the Fuller
Foundation. However, now back in the comfort of my Long Island town, I continue to ask
myself, “What more can I do for Armenia?” I believe that the IB/Emerging Markets program
will provide me with the tools that could help me make lasting impacts in emerging markets,
such as Armenia, by helping stimulate the economy through viable business opportunities.
To become a savvy and socially responsible entrepreneur, I need firsthand experience learning
about cultures, organizations, and business practices around the world. As a finalist of the U.S.
National Security Language Initiative for the Youth, I hope to spend this summer in Istanbul
to study Turkish and to gain insight into the complicated, yet economically intertwined
relationship, between Turkey and Armenia. I am very excited SBE offers the possibility to
continue to improve my Turkish at the Language Center and to study a semester at a Turkish
partner university in Istanbul.

• Compared to other universities you considered, which aspects of our BSc International Business have been decisive? Please use maximum 250 words.
Beyond the unique PBL teaching model and the option to specialize in emerging markets in
your second year, I truly appreciate the genuine international environment at Maastricht’s I.B.
program.
Throughout my life, my Dutch mother arranged yearly visits to the Netherlands, while my
Armenian/Austrian/American father prepared weekly Armenian dinners and family travels
across many continents. I spent the first years of my life in Vienna, Austria, before moving to
Long Island, N.Y. My life has been enriched by cross-cultural interactions and international
travels.
I strongly believe that the only way to gain a deeper understanding of international business
concepts and entrepreneurship is to apply what you learn to real-world challenges. The course
“EM-Financing Emerging Economies” ties together my interests in finance and banking and
social enterprises perfectly. The “Base” project at the Centre for Entrepreneurship (MC4E)
and the entrepreneurial student organizations Enactus and SCOPE will be valuable
experiences in marketing and managing entrepreneurial operations. During my recent visit to
S.B.E., I had the pleasure of meeting a number of I.B. students, as well as a very informative
tour with an emerging market student. The international and entrepreneurial environment that
exists at U.M. will provide a perfect springboard to meet my educational and professional
goals.
The city of Maastricht also has so much to offer. As a passionate sailor I am looking forward
to join the Lagakari sailing club, practice my French language skills at “walking distance”,
and the “zachte g” while enjoying a piece of limburge vlaai at my grandparents’ home.
