Student exchange to Tempe

• Hutt Sister City Foundation signed the first Sister City agreement with Tempe in November 23 1981

• 7 sister cities/friendship cities- 2 in the USA, 1 in Japan, 1 in South Korea and 3 in China

• Up to four students travel between Lower Hutt and Tempe each year for a 4-5 week exchange

• Up to two teachers can travel each year

Selection process• Ads are placed in the local paper advising of the

information evening as well as using a billboard• We also advertise it on our Facebook Page and Website

Information evening• Parents of students who have just come back from Tempe

speak regarding the experience raising up to $15000- this to cover part of the airfares, activities while Tempe is here and incidentals. Students also have their say about what it has meant to them.

• Application close several weeks after the information evening

• All applicants are interviewed by the board- including students who have just returned

• All applicants receive a house visit from Board members to ascertain if the house is suitable to host a student

• Selection of students is made by the board and all applicants- successful or other wise, are advised face to face if possible

• Successful students are given an envelope containing a US $1 note as a start of their journey

• All people 18 and over living on the host families property are police checked to confirm they are suitable to host the student
