4. Type a new password in both the “New password” and “Confirm password” boxes. You must type the
passwords exactly the same way in both boxes. Microsoft requires the use of “strong” passwords which means
that passwords must be a minimum of 8 and a maximum of 16 characters long and contain at least three of the
following four types of characters:
o Lower-case letters: a b c d e f g h i j k l m n o p q r s t u v w x y z

NOTE: the password may NOT contain your username (the part of your e-mail address before the @ sign) for example if
your e-mail address is [email protected] then you cannot use astudent5 in your password. You also may
not use any blank spaces or .@ (a dot immediately preceding an @ sign) in your password).
5. Click on “Update password and sign in”
6. Select your Language and Time zone, then click “Save”. Typically you will select:
o English (United States)
o (UTC-08:00) Pacific Time (US & Canada)

Next you will be prompted for a method to contact you to verify your identity in case you ever need to request

You will have the option of specifying a phone or an alternate personal e-mail address. You can configure either one or
both of these options.
If you would like to use both options, simply select one of the options, fill out the necessary information and then click
the “back” button at the bottom of the window (not the “back” button of your browser). You will be sent an
authentication code via the options you select to confirm that you have access to that phone or e-mail account.
If you decide to use a phone, you will need to specify what country your phone number is from (probably: “United States
(+1)”), your phone number, and if you want Microsoft to text you or call you with the authentication code.

Once you receive the Microsoft verification code via text or a phone call, enter it in the box provided and click on the
“verify” button. It will then take you back to “don’t lose access to your account page” where you can either click on the
option to configure an e-mail address or click “Finish”.
If you want to receive the authentication code at an alternate personal e-mail address, then you will simply need to
provide that e-mail address and click on the “email me” button.
Once you receive the Microsoft verification code via your alternate e-mail address, enter it in the box provided and click
on the “verify” button. It will then take you back to “don’t lose access to your account page” where you can either click
on the option to configure a phone or click “Finish”.
