Question:

Some researchers in the field of Human Resource Management (Kilpatrick and Locke 1991; and Northouse, 1997) have argued that some people are born to lead due to their personal qualities, and therefore, leadership is only available for the chosen few. In other research (Blake and Mouton, 1964; Northouse, 1997), the focus was on the leadership behaviour, which seems to be based on the concern for production (clarifying role, scheduling work, measuring output); and the concern for people (building trust, camaraderie, and a friendly atmosphere). This kind of research suggests that leadership is accessible for all people and can be learned as a behaviour.

In the light of the above statement, critically discuss and evaluate those views on the notion of leadership and its relationship with the concept of employee motivation.

Open the spreadsheet and download the figures it contains, then PRINT THEM (or use the ‘Edit/Copy and Edit/Paste Special/Values’ facility in Excel) before proceeding. Each spreadsheet contains a random number generator so every one will be different and the sheet will be different every time you open it. If two students submit work with the same numbers both will receive zero marks.

You are required to analyse the accounts you have downloaded using whatever methods you feel appropriate and comment on the information they contain.

Question 2:

You are required to produce a reflective commentary (maximum 1500 words) on your answer to Question 1. Your answer should discuss the limitations of your methodology and a comment on what other information and methods would be necessary to enable a complete analysis. Your answer may also contain a reflection on your own learning from this exercise.

Presentation Question:

Critically analyse the financial performance of a public limited company of your choice, by considering at least two years data, and do a group presentation. Comment on the financial reporting practice of the selected company in the light of European Standards. The presentation has to be made during class. Students can form their groups in consultation with their Module Leaders.
