Student Chapter Report 2009

Tecnológico de Monterrey

SPIE Student Chapter Report

Fall 2009

On Campus Activities Recruiting new members

During the first week of the semester we set up a booth where we post information material about the society and inform students about the benefits of becoming SPIE members. To make the booth more attractive to students, we put posters and show the videos created by the SPIE. Moreover, we give away promotional material such as pamphlets, magazines, posters, laser pointers, etc. Promotion of the chapter was also supported by faculty from the physics department and optics center, who allowed us to visit their classrooms for a few minutes to invite more people to join.

Introduction to Latex

We organized two Latex workshops, taught by José Hipólito García who is the president of our chapter members. The first workshop was an introduction to the general aspects of Latex and provided the tools to get started with a professional scientific report. In the second workshop the students learned advance topics to custom their reports and generate presentations. (Approx. 15 attendees)

Visitors

This time our chapter was proud to host to remarkable visitors: Prof. Ivan I. Smalyukh and Prof. Virendra N. Mahajan. Prof. Smalyukh from the University of Colorado at Boulder paid us a visit last November and gave the lecture Controlling matter by focused beams: laser tweezers and laser shapers for our members. Prof. Mahajan from the Aerospace Corp. at Los Angeles visited our chapter last April and gave two lectures on aberration balancing, which were titled Beam Focusing and Depth of Focus and Orthonormal Polynomials in Wavefront Analysis.

Off Campus Activities Optics outreach

Monterrey International Book Fair 2008: This time we participated in the international book fair which took place in Monterrey, Mexico. We had students from elementary to high school and talked to them about micro-optics using the NEMO’s educational kit (EDUKITs) and taught them how to build telescopes with the “Hands-on in optics kit” that were generously provided by NEMO, SPIE, OSA and NOAO. (Approx. 150 K-12 students)

EDUKIT Workshop: This activity took place in X, located in Y, N.L. We had a total of 32 K-12 students. The materials for the workshop consisted on the EDUKITs provided by the SPIE and NEMO.

Conferences and meetings

An important part of our annual activities consists of our chapter officers and members attending SPIE Conferences and other meetings.

Mexican Chapters Meeting

Earlier this year, Hipolito Garcia-Gracia, Hector Sosa-Martinez and Adrian Ruelas-Urias visited our partner chapter at Centro de Investigaciones en Optica (CIO) in Leon, where Prof. Maria Yzuel met with officers from several SPIE Student Chapters in Mexico.

Student Chapter Leadership Workshop (August 1st-2nd.)

The officers of the chapter were present at the Student Chapter Leadership Workshops which took place in the Optics+Photonics Conferences in San Diego, CA. In the workshops we interacted with other chapter officers and shared experiences and ideas for being a successful chapter.

Planned Activities for 2009-2010 Member recruitment week (Early August, 2009)

During the first week of August 2009, we will set up the member recruitment stand inside the Tecnológico de Monterrey campus in order to increase the members of our SPIE student chapter.

Outreach activities (Fall 2009 through Fall 2010)

Several outreach activities will be carried out through Fall 2009 to Fall 2010. Some of the planned outreach activities are listed below.

• LaTeX Workshops: The LaTeX workshop is designed to give a brief introduction to writing scientific documents with LaTeX. We will impart two workshops, one for beginner and the other for advance users.

• MATLAB Workshops: We plan to give three workshops throughout the year. The first one will be an introductory course to MATLAB for students who have never used it. The second workshop is destined to users who have some experience with MATLAB and will cover how to generate high quality graphics. The last workshop will teach how to create graphical user interfaces.

• EDUKITs, Hands-on in Optics kit and Optics Suitcase workshops: We plan to introduce K-12 students in all optical phenomena that are taught in the kits provided by the SPIE, OSA, NEMO, NOAO and the University of Rochester.

• Workshops for kids during the XIX International Book Fair: During the XIX International Book Fair we will give some optics workshops for kids, which will include the EDUKITs, “Hands-on in optics kit” and “Optics Suitcase” activities.

Seminars (Fall 2009 through Fall 2010)

Optics and Physics seminars will be given by faculty of the physics department and optics center.

Khet Tournament (Fall 2009)

We plan to organize a Khet tournament using the sponsorship given by the SPIE and Innovation Toys.

Visiting Lecturer Program (Spring 2010)

We plan to hold a lecture given by a member of the Visiting Lecturer Program. The speaker will be chosen by the chapter members during Fall 2009.

IV Scientific Photography Contest (Spring 2010)

As in previous years, in Spring 2010 we will carry out the IV Scientific Photography Contest in both categories: digital photography and printed photography. Prizes will be given by some of our sponsors.
