2018

Purpose

UNF has administered the Student Campus Life Survey (SCLS) annually to all students

since 2012. The SCLS acts as a mechanism for academic and administrative units across

campus to craft questions based on their specific needs, and combine those questions

into a single institutional survey. The hope is that this omnibus approach will reduce the

total number of surveys individual units send out to the campus community.

Six percent of students (n=930) responded to the 2018 SCLS.

Information to assist UNF’s Incoming President

Contributed by the Office of Institutional Research & the Office of Assessment

Q. Why do you think students choose to come to UNF?

Students (undergraduates = 444, graduates = 74) agreed on five major reasons students choose

UNF (ranked in order of popularity):

1. Location. UNF is in close proximity to many students’ homes, work places, and families,

and it’s conveniently located in the accessible Jacksonville metropolitan area.

2. Unique academic programs. Respondents noted both the variety and scope of

academic programming UNF offers, and the depth in programming particularly when it

comes to flagship programs. Students also noted key opportunities for internships and

service learning.

3. Small class size. Respondents noted both the small teacher to student ratio and the

intimate feeling of the campus environment.

4. Affordability and value. Respondents remarked on the low cost of attendance

combined with the academic quality that the programming and the faculty have to offer.

5. Beauty. Respondents mentioned the beauty of the campus itself in its buildings and

vegetation, and the natural appeal of the surrounding coastal area.

4

Q. Cultural immersion is going to be important for the new UNF

president. What is the best way for our new leader to become

immersed in UNF culture?

Students (undergraduates = 387, graduates = 72) agreed on two major themes related to

cultural immersion:

1. Be visible at events. Respondents suggested that meeting, talking, and interacting with

students, faculty and staff at campus events is the key method for becoming immersed

in UNF culture. Respondents noted that direct participation in diverse kinds of events will

allow the president to become aware of the scope of campus life and its various

constituents.

2. Walk in a student’s shoes. Respondents suggested that direct contact with students

was essential to becoming immersed in the culture. Many students suggested walking,

eating, attending, and navigating campus as a student “in disguise.”

5

Q. Communication will be key for our new UNF president. What do

you think are the best ways our new leader can communicate with

students? Faculty and staff?

Students (undergraduates = 223, graduates = 77) agreed on two major themes related to

communication:

1. Verbal communication and physical presence. Most respondents expressed a desire

for the president to make time for and spend time with the various segments of the

community. Suggestions to be visible ranged from holding casual meet-and-greets, to

giving formal addresses, to attending events and meetings.

2. Written/verbal communication through email. Most respondents also felt that

regular written or verbal communication about announcements, events, and campus-

wide concerns through electronic means or social media is important.

Looking Ahead to 2019

Administration of the SCLS is planned for March 2019.

If you would like to contribute questions to the 2019 SCLS, please contact Amanda Kulp,

Director, Office of Assessment, at [email protected].

Methods

Twenty-two units contributed questions to the 2018 SCLS and its corresponding survey,

the 2018 Faculty and Staff Campus Life Survey. The surveys were administered via email

during a 3-week period in March. Non-respondents were reminded periodically via

email up until the survey window closed.

Six percent of students (n=930) and 32% of faculty and staff (n=598) responded.

The sample of students who responded to the SCLS was generally representative of the

student population at UNF. The distribution of respondents across Colleges was

roughly equal to the distribution of students across Colleges in the population. The

distribution of White to non-White respondents was also representative of the

population.

However, females were overrepresented in the sample: the sample was 69% female

(n=643) and population of active UNF students is 57% female. Readers of this report

should keep this discrepancy in mind as they interpret the results.
