STUDENT ENGAGEMENT

The Student Engagement Committee has been planning and prepping for one of the most anticipated Student Association sponsored events of the year, Impact Week. Impact Week is a community outreach init iative sponsored by Student Association to show how students around campus are making a dif ference. Assembly representatives are working hard to make Impact Week a success. A survey has been created to monitor progress and to gauge student's reactions and opinions towards this event. The Student Engagement Committee works to reach out to the community to get involved and brings in Syracuse off icials and leaders to speak with students directly. Members have met with the WRC, Derek Ford & Syracuse Answer Coalit ion to f igure out key f igures and routes in the West Side and South-side of the city for Impact Week. A Student Association representative has also met with the Syracuse Chair of the Anthropology Department who is active in the community research to discuss this init iative further. In addition, we reach out to all student leaders within Registered Student Organizations to see how they could contribute, and benefit from Impact Week. Are you interested in getting more involved? The Student Life Committee has been working on

multiple new projects. First, Student Association is pushing for the installation of heat lamps for the bus stops on Main and South campus, these should be installed permanently during Spring Break. At this time, it is only available to undergraduate students but the committee has been working with the Graduate Student Organization to discuss expanding it to graduate students. The Committee is stil l working on advocating for transfer students participate in Greek Life their f irst semester at Syracuse University. Approval from Syracuse University for this init iative is now pending. The nutrit ion information in the dining halls is one of the older init iatives of this Committee and is now a regular feature found within all campus dining establishments. One of the assembly representatives and member of this Committee has been working on creating a survey to receive feedback.

The Student Life Committee has many new members this semester, and thus a lot of new ideas and init iatives! During the last few meetings, the members have given the chair of the Committee, Aysha Seedat, some new ideas including improving the quality of AirOrangeX, improving lackluster men?s bathrooms, and purchasing better furniture for residence halls around Syracuse campus. Additionally, the Student Association Vice President is f inishing the f inal parts of the bike share init iative. The bike share init iative will act as a pilot program once it is implemented. Student Association has had numerous brand new init iatives introduced in Assembly

this month. The Academic Affairs Committee within Student Association is working hard in particular on three set init iatives. The f irst is an init iative to create a multi-l ingual writ ing center, to benefit the entire student body. Currently, the Syracuse Writing Center only offers its services in English. What if students could also receive this service in Spanish, or even Mandarin? The Academic Affairs committee is working closely with Syracuse University to see how we could at least make a bi-l ingual writ ing center possible by the end of this current semester.

Two other current init iatives include increasing opportunities for undergraduate research and Syllabi transparency. The Academic Affairs Committee in collaboration with Vice President Daniela Lopez, have been focusing more on opportunities for undergraduates in all departments. Student Association is in the process of approving 15,000 for a pilot program and we hope to run it for the summer with 3-4 student stipends. In terms of syllabi, Student Association is working to make it possible for students to view the syllabus for a class before the enrollment period begins.
