Achievement & Recognition

UAA anticipates students will receive more than 2,500 degrees and certificates in AY16, matching, if not surpassing, the 2,561 total from AY15.


Fulbright Scholars

• Ben Hurst, 2016-17 Fulbright Teaching Scholar, is the ninth German language student at UAA to receive this award.

• Chrystalyn Lemieux received a 2016-17 Fulbright Student Award to Canada.

• 13 UAA students in the past decade havereceived this prestigious award.


Congress-Bundestag Scholar

• Veronica Martinez, a UAA mechanical engineering student who has studied the German language for seven years, was named a Congress-Bundestag Youth Exchange for Young Professionals scholar for 2016-17.


UAA debate team members Jonathon Taylor and Johanna Richter qualified for the elimination rounds at the World Universities Debating Championships, one of only eight teams from the U.S. qualifying, and the only non-Ivy League public university to advance. Sarah Elton and Sam Erickson reached the semifinals in the U.S. Universities Debate Championships.

National & International Success for UAA Debate Team

• Kenai Peninsula College teams finished second and third in the National Science Foundation’s 2016 National Process Technology Troubleshooting Competition.

• UAA Construction Management students took second and third place at this year’s National Associated Schools of Construction Competition.

• Isaac Yep, a UAA Mechanical Engineering student, received the Alex Hills Engineering & Civic Engagement Award to build a prototype STEM educational instrument.

• Jana Lekanoff, a UAA anthropology student, received the Second Bridge Award to travel to Unalaska for research on her project, “Place Names of Unalaska Island.”

Student Attainment

Katie Rubin (right), a UAF doctoral student working with mammal curator Link Olson at the Museum of the North, has been awarded a graduate research fellowship from the National Science Foundation. She is studying hibernation in hoary marmots.

Erin Shew (left), a graduate student in Arctic and Northern Studies at UAF’s College of Liberal Arts, has been awarded the John A. Knauss Marine Policy Fellowship. The fellowship is a unique educational experience for graduate students interested in national policy decisions affecting ocean, coastal and Great Lakes resources.

Biology and wildlife Ph.D. student Roxanne Beltran (right) delivered the best pre-doctoral spoken presentation at the 2015 Conference on the Biology of Marine Mammals. Institute of Arctic Biology Assistant Professor Greg Breed is her advisor. She earned her master’s degree from UAA.

Saurabh Suryawanshi (left), a master’s student in petroleum engineering, earned third place in the student presentation and poster contest at the 2016 American Association of Drilling Engineers Fluids Conference in Houston, Texas.

John Barefoot, Mitali Chandnani, Alby Harris, Emily Pendergrass, and Bakul Mathur were advised by UAF Professor of Geology Catherine Hanks

Student AchievementA team of five UAF geoscience and engineering graduate

students won first place at the regional 2016 Imperial Barrel Awards competition.

UAF College of Engineering and Mines Steel Bridge Team, coached by Professor Leroy Hulsey, won the Northwest Regional Competition again!

The team represented the Pacific Northwest Region at the national event in Provo, Utah.

Budget Cuts: Impact on Enrollment and Tuition Revenue

Factors:• Capacity = number of class sections available• Recruiting • Scholarships and fellowships available for

recruiting and retention• Institutional reputation• Unemployment rate (increase improves

enrollment)• Alaska population loss due to economy

Conclusion: Complex and difficult to predict, but we are working on it!

What can we control?

Capacity = number of class sections available• UAF: Faculty, Adjunct Faculty and TA losses = up to 350 fewer

sections taught = up to $4M less tuitionBut, will minimize by increasing teaching loads of remaining faculty

Recruiting• Targeting efforts, aim to make more effective despite budget

reduction

Scholarships and fellowships • Immediate effect greatest at graduate level• Anticipate up to 5% graduate enrollment decrease, particularly if

carryforward intended for Teaching Assistantships is redirected

• After 1986-1987 funding reductions and enrollment drop, enrollment rebounded and remained strong

• This was partly due to high unemployment in Alaska

• Also students who were already enrolled continued

• However, enrollment fell after the mid-1990’s

High School Market Share

• Students must first apply to get a formal transfer evaluation

• Transfer students coming in with a large number of credits may be ineligible for financial aid due to restrictions related to Satisfactory Academic Progress

• Classes taken at institutions not regionally accredited don’t transfer except by petition or credit for prior learning

• A bad grade in a class transfers. The grade can only be replaced by taking the class over at the original location

• Each University has a different minimum score for accepted transfer of some CLEP and AP exams

• For-credit classes transfer across the system

Transfer Issues

• UA has many great students doing great things

• There is a lot for us to be proud of

• Enrollment in first time freshmen has dropped over the last 4 years

• Another piece of the enrollment decline is that many non-degree seeking students are taking fewer credits

• Enrollment swings are part of our history

• The percent of college going population has decreased overall since 1978
