Help with managing your moneyHow overdrafts workAn arranged overdraft means we’ve agreed that you can borrow money from us in advance. With our Student Account you can apply for an interest free tiered arranged overdraft of up to £1,500. In your first year of study you could get up to £500 for the first six months from account opening, and then request to increase it to £1,000 in months seven to nine from account opening. From month 10 of account opening until the end of your third year of study, you can request another increase to £1,500.

If you’re studying on a course that is longer than three years, you can request to increase your arranged overdraft to £2,000 from year four onwards, should you need it. The amount of your arranged overdraft that is interest free depends on your year of study.

Overdrafts are subject to application and approval and repayable on demand. You must be 18 or over to apply.

Interest free amountsYear

Interest free arranged overdraft amount

Year 1 of study – first 6 months from account opening £500

Year 1 of study – months 7 – 9 from account opening £1,000

Year 1 of study – months 10 – 12 from account opening Years 2 and 3 of study

£1,500

Years 4 – 6 of study £2,000

Representative exampleIn your second year, if you use an arranged overdraft of £1,200 on your Student Account, then we’ll charge you an interest rate of: 0% pa (variable) Representative 0% APR (variable)

APR (Annual Percentage Rate) shows you the annual cost of borrowing for a year. It includes the interest you’ll pay as well as the monthly maintaining the account fees, if your account has them. You can use the representative APR to help compare rates with other providers.

How overdrafts work

How does our overdraft compare? You can use the representative APR to compare with other products or credit providers, this can help you make sure that you choose the right type of borrowing for you.

How much does my overdraft cost in pounds and pence? As an example, the interest cost of borrowing £500 is:

£0.00 for 7 days £0.00 for 30 days £0.00 for 60 days

You can use our calculator to work out how much your anticipated arranged overdraft borrowing would cost over different periods of time. You can find the calculator here: bankofscotland.co.uk/overdrafts

If you go over your limitSo all your payments are made, it’s important you manage your account within your arranged overdraft limit. If you don’t have enough money in your account or you reach your limit, you may not be able to make any more payments. If a payment takes you over your limit or we refuse it, you won’t be charged. Missing payments or using an unarranged overdraft can damage your credit score.

Daily arranged overdraft interestIn some circumstances, we may have agreed an arranged overdraft limit which is different than stated on page 4. In this case, when using your arranged overdraft, you may pay daily interest. We calculate your arranged overdraft interest depending on how much you borrow.

Grace periodOur grace period means that you have until 2.30pm to pay in enough to ensure the payment goes out, but you have until the end of the day to avoid daily arranged overdraft interest. The money needs to clear the same day, so you could pay in cash or transfer money from another personal account you have with us using Internet, Telephone or Mobile Banking.

Once your account is converted, the benefits connected with your Student Account will stop.

Where we change your type of account we will tell you before making the change and will give you the details of your new account.

Overdrafts and credit cards

You will need to apply for your arranged overdraft at your local Bank of Scotland branch or online if you are registered for Internet Banking bankofscotland.co.uk

If you want to change the PIN to a number that’s easier to remember just follow the on screen directions at any Bank of Scotland Cashpoint®.

If you wish to cancel payments made on a regular basis from your card account, such as magazine subscriptions, you can tell us that you no longer consent to these payments being made. You can do this at any time before the end of the last working day before the next payment is due to be made. We will then stop the payments. We also advise that you contact the person you make the payment to so that they do not keep trying to take the payment. You will need to contact them if you want to cancel your agreement with them in any case, as we cannot do that for you. Frequently asked questionsWhat can I do to avoid theft or fraud? Here are some simple rules to follow so that you’re always in control of your money:

A Make sure that your chequebook and cards are safe, but don’t keep them together.

A We recommend you don’t write down your PIN. But if you need to write it down, disguise it so that it’s not recognisable as your PIN, and never keep it with any of your cards. Never let anyone else know your PIN.

A Always sign your cards in ballpoint pen as soon as you receive them.

A Always be sure that before you give your bank details out you know who you’re giving them to and why they need the information.

A Ensure that you keep your Visa debit card receipts in a safe place and dispose of them carefully making sure the Visa debit card details cannot be read.

A Check your statements regularly and get in touch if you see any transactions you don’t recognise.

What should I do if my Visa debit card and chequebook are lost or stolen? You must report any theft or loss as soon as possible so that we can prevent other people from using your account. Please call any Bank of Scotland branch or the 24-hour Lost and Stolen Cards service on 0800 028 8335 or +44 131 454 1605 if calling from abroad. You will receive replacement cards and/or chequebooks from us usually within five working days of notifying us.

How do I pay in money at any Bank of Scotland branch?Lots of people pay in over the counter, but to save time, you can use one of our Immediate Deposit Machines (IDM)(if available). You can pay in cash and cheques at any Bank of Scotland branch either over the counter or by using our IDMs. All cash deposits over the counter will be processed straight away. All cash deposits made at an IDM will be processed the same working day if deposited in the IDM before branch closing time. Any deposits made after that time will be processed the next working day. Please remember weekends and Bank Holidays are not counted as working days.

What happens when I pay cheques in?For more information about when cheques you either write or pay in will be processed and the money can be accessed, please see Bank of Scotland Bank Account Conditions.

How do direct debits work?A direct debit is when you authorise a business or other organisation to collect varying sums of money from your account on a regular basis. The organisation must give you advance notice of the amounts and dates. And with UK direct debit payments, you have our guarantee of a refund in case of any mistakes.

When an organisation collects a direct debit in the UK, the money will always leave your account and reach theirs on the same day, whichever bank they’re with.

A You can set up direct debits to make regular payments direct from your account. You do it by authorising whoever you want to make the payment to, for example your gas supplier, to collect the payments from your account.

A When you want to end or change an agreement, just tell us.

A And with all UK direct debit payments, you have our guarantee of a refund in case of any mistakes. Should a company collect one of your payments by mistake, we will refund your account as soon as we are aware there’s a problem.

How do standing orders work?A standing order is an instruction you give us to make regular fixed payments to another bank account. You can set up standing orders through Telephone Banking on 0345 721 3141 from 7am to 11pm or through Internet Banking. Just tell us if you need to cancel or change the payment the day before it is due to be made.

How long do my payments take? The majority of payments made (other than by cheque and direct debit) to a UK bank will be processed using the Faster Payments Service with payments usually reaching the receiving account within two hours. Payments for larger amounts may take up to a day. We will advise you when you ask us to make a payment if the organisation you are sending the payment to is a member of the Faster Payments Service and whether this service is available.

If we cannot make the payment using the Faster Payments Service you can contact us on 0345 721 3141 from 7am to 11pm or call into your local branch to ask if there is any other method available to make the payment. For more information about the time it takes to make a payment please see the Bank of Scotland Bank Account Conditions. Any payment you make to another Bank of Scotland account will get there the same day the money leaves your account.

Standing orders and future dated paymentsWe make payments from your account shortly after midnight at the start of the due date. If your payment date falls on a non-working day, then we will try to collect your payment the next working day.

If you don’t have enough funds in your account at this point to make a payment, we will try to make a payment again after 2.30pm the same day. This gives you the chance to put extra funds into your account so that we can make the payment. The money needs to be available to use straight away, so you could transfer money from another personal account you have with us via Internet, Mobile or Telephone Banking or pay in cash over the counter in branch.

If you do not have enough funds at the beginning of a day to make a payment:

A You have until 2.30pm to pay money into your account to make the payment that day

A If a payment takes you into an arranged overdraft, you have until the end of the day to pay money into your account to avoid daily arranged overdraft interest.

If there is still not enough money in your account or available arranged overdraft, we will make a final try on the next working day.

How do I cancel a cheque? If you need to cancel a cheque you’ve written from being paid, please come into your nearest branch or call us on 0345 721 3141 from 7am to 11pm to tell us.

How do I send money outside the UK or in a foreign currency?

We offer a wide range of services that allow you to send money outside the UK or in a foreign currency quickly, securely and easily. You’ll need to give us accurate information about the person you are sending money to.

It is recommended that you provide the following:

A Their full name and address.

A Their Business Identifier Code (BIC)/SWIFT code or national bank code.

A Their bank account number or International Bank Account Number (IBAN).

A Their bank’s full address.

BIC and IBAN are similar to a bank account number and sort code in the UK and are mandatory for payments to the EU, EEA and a number of other countries in Europe and globally. When sending money outside the UK or in a foreign currency please check with the person receiving the money if an IBAN and/or BIC is a mandatory requirement for payments to be processed.

There are charges to use these services, if you’d like more information about these services and how long these payments take, contact Telephone Banking on 0345 721 3141, 8am to 10pm Monday to Friday, and 8am to 4pm on a Saturday. You can also visit any Bank of Scotland branch or go online.
