My School Website

Last week the Australian Curriculum, Assessment and Reporting Authority (ACARA) released the 2013 schools’ data through the My School website and in doing so, createdthe annual media frenzy of school comparisons. The Monday edition of the Canberra Times front page headline was ‘Independents a point or two above the pack’, and thearticle used league tables to compare the merits, or otherwise, of schools in the ACT based purely on the NAPLAN results. The flurry of excitement in seemingly being able torank schools needs to be tempered by the value of the data presented and what it really tells us about individual schools.

I am delighted that the My School website generates such interest in the public domain. I am buoyed when education, the value of schools, the quality of teachers and thedegree of government funding is publicly discussed and debated, as it is each time ACARA updates the data on the My School website. Education is an incredibly importantfactor in the success of this country and the more it is discussed and the greater the scrutiny, the better our education system will become.

Despite being supportive of the website, however, I would add the following words of caution in relation to its use and decision-making powers. The My School website issimply one more signpost on the road to accountability – it is not the destination or the answer to accountability. It is one of many starting points for parents to seekinformation and augments the detail included on our website, in the eBulletin, in reports to parents, government accountability requirements and discussions with schoolpersonnel.

Most importantly, the My School website only gives a snapshot of students’ ability in literacy and numeracy relative to other groups of students in the four year levels whereNAPLAN testing takes place (i.e. Years 3, 5, 7 and 9). It does not measure the progress students make (often directly attributable to either the teacher or the School as a

Page 3: student absences - radford.act.edu.au Bulletin_120314.pdfPhotographer: Adrian Cattanach 12 March 2014 Radford College Calendar To advise student absences, please contact the relevant

whole) as they transition through school, nor does it measure the many other skills students acquire at school. I know from my discussions with prospective parents that mostfamilies are looking for a holistic education for their child including wide ranging co-curricular opportunities, a relevant pastoral care program, community service and religiousand values education, as well as a range of different subject offerings. Quite simply, NAPLAN results do not indicate the value-added aspects of schooling that independentschools, in particular, do so well.

I have no doubt that by now many members of our school community will have logged onto the My School website to see how Radford College rates in relation to otherschools. As expected, the College compares very favourably with the 25 or so schools listed in the ‘statistically similar’ group in which we have been bundled. While themajority of the schools in our Similar Schools group are independent schools, it is interesting to note that some of the government schools listed are select entry only. On theother hand, like most independent schools, we take pride in being steadfastly non-selective. Statistically similar schools have been grouped together after being assigned avalue on the Index of Community Socio-Educational Advantage (ICSEA). This ICSEA score is very similar to the Socio-Economic Status (SES) that has been used in fundingcalculations, and has been developed to take into account the variables that are known to be strong predictors of educational advantage at school level, including where astudent lives as well as the geographical location of the school.

Like all other schools around the country, we are compelled to provide the information for this website as our funding is dependent on compliance. I am not concerned aboutRadford College’s performance statistics being detailed on this website now or in the future as I know our results in both NAPLAN and Year 12 are consistently outstanding, even when compared to schools whose students are from similar socio-economic backgrounds. I am concerned, however, that this website could become a ‘one stop shop’for parents wanting to gather information about schools and make comparisons. I would ask readers of this website to consider all of the elements of a successful school, notjust a statistic posted on a website.

Resilience is a life skill that enables children, adolescents and adults to cope with the ups and downs of daily life. Read more in: Fuller, A.,”Tricky Kids: Transforming conflict and freeing their potential”, Lane Cove: Finch Publishing, 2007

Children and adolescents develop resilience by

Being unconditionally loved by their parents , not because they have achieved good resultsHaving a diverse group of friends, mixing with different groups of friends at school at sporting and social eventsHaving an adult outside of their family who likes them. These can include neighbours, family friends , teachers and sports coaches .

Seven Messages for parents who do too much

Remember : One day my child will have to cope without meChildren learn competence and confidence by tackling some things on their own ( School camp, going to the shops , travelling to and from school). There are some situations in which my child can cope without my helpHelp is not always helpful. Sometimes it robs people of the opportunity to work out their own way of doing things. The toughest trees grow in the windiest conditions. Making everything easy for your child won’t help him or her cope with hardship.Rarely or never do anything for a child that he or she can do for her or himself (carrying their school bag, continually remembering their PE uniform).Things that are scarce are more valued. While not distancing yourself from your child, if you are feeling undervalued or used, make your assistance scarcer.

From the Head of Junior SchoolPaul Southwell

I write this week's e-bytes in the early hours of Tuesday morning. The calm before the storm in some ways. In a few short hours a short, but very busy working week willcommence.

I'm excited to be welcoming our Grandfriends into our Junior School later this morning. I remember growing up in Canberra how excited I was when my Grandparents couldjoin us at sport events etc. I wasn't able to share my school day with them at any stage in my educational journey, unlike our boys and girls who will again be able to share, listen, show, discuss, and learn from the many Grandfriends joining us on this day after Canberra Day.

Reading ChallengeBy the time you read this newsletter, I hope to have my feet up resting. Many people have reminded me about my rather brash reading challenge outcome this year. The walkfrom the College to the National Library is long enough. The weather is predicted to be in the high twenties. The Gruffalo suit is very hot, and almost impossible to easily moveor see from with any confidence. My reply is simple, I made a challenge, one that your sons and daughters met. They read with perseverance. They stuck to a task. For somethe challenge was easy, for some a delight, for some a task and for a small number, a real challenge, but they did it. Each year I find at least one or two boys and girls who, prior to the challenge see reading as a chore, while post, as a joy. I simply cannot resist that. I will be sharing the walk with some noble and foolish staff. My thanks to MsStanton (owl), Ms Markovic (snake), Mr Black (that mouse), and Mr Craddock (fox). I also sincerely thank all of the Junior School staff who have so strongly supported thischallenge, who drove the bus behind the walkers, who supported the challenge on a daily basis, and who joined with all our students in celebration at the National Librarytoday.

The timing of the Reading Challenge walk has been deliberate as our Early Years parents meet to share in our Reading Night, our teaching staff have been sharing andrefining both their own and our College's reading beliefs and approaches, to support better the love of reading in these vital age groups from Pre Kinder to Year Six.

Finally, I was extremely pleased to welcome our 2014 Parent Liaisons last Thursday evening. I'm looking forward to sharing with you, through them, the educational journeyyour sons and daughters have embarked upon. We are looking at our parent supporters as guides, and provocateurs in increasing the sharing and visibility of the academicand social journey at our Junior School.

Congratulationssee Student Achievements in the Main Bulletin for JS and other successes!

Warm regardsPaul Southwell

PYP IN ACTION TERM 1, WEEK 5, 2014

P-2 PYP Coordinator: Belinda ReitstatterY3-Y6 PYP Coordinator: David Gocentas

This section of our Junior School Bytes is designed to keep our school community informed about our Primary Years Programmecurriculum in the Junior School.

It is not just the Gruffalo who likes talking about reading at Radford! During recent weeks the entire Junior School staff have been discussing their beliefs and understandingsof the way children learn to read. The broad experiences that our staff hold, teaching children from a range of age groups and abilities, contribute greatly to such discussionsand certainly add a strong sense of knowledge and passion. At the centre of each discussion is the child. Is the child ready to read this text? What can I do if they are notready? Is the child interested? How can I help them to become interested in reading? The role of the adult, both the teacher and the caregiver, is critical here.

While our Early Years educators prepare to present their reading practices to parents and caregivers in the coming days, (see calendar details below), their main intention isto seek your partnership in guiding your child to enjoy the emotional and intellectual satisfaction of reading. This, as you would appreciate, is not viewed as a job or a set taskwith a starting and finishing date. Rather it is a lifelong way of being or a belief that every child deserves to find enjoyment from reading. Whether reading becomes a way toimagine living the life of someone else through the realms of fiction, or reading becomes a vehicle that provokes a sense of thought and wonder, our aim is for every child toexperience the love of reading.

As adults, this belief can be challenging to simply accept. What if my son views reading as something that is stopping him from playing outside? What if my daughter prefersto play on the iPad or watch movies? When we read for enjoyment we are usually reading about something in which we are interested. Or about something that makes uscurious. Think about the way you read a newspaper. What parts do you read? What do you leave out?

If you are interested in hearing our views on some of these questions or you would like support to help your child gain greater enjoyment out of reading, please come along toone of our reading sessions. Again, your partnership in this journey is most valued. While we are starting with the Pre K and Kindergarten programs this Wednesday12th March at 6pm, next Wednesday 19th March at 6pm we are holding a Year 1 and 2 evening in the Red Room. Our Year 3-6 reading nights are to be confirmed.
