    STUD PARTITIONS

A stud partition is by farthe easiest way ofdividing one large roominto two, and as long asall the principles areunderstood, planningpermission maysometimes be required.

Consideration should begiven to any sound or fireresistance

    Rockwool Sound Insulation

Fire resistance is achievedby using double layers of12mm extra thickplasterboards with joints

    staggered

    STUD PARTITIONS

Before constructing any partition, the type of floorthat you are building onto is always an importantfactor.

With a solid floor, the partition can stand anywhere, fixed down using screws and plugs. (assuming thatthe floor does not conceal underfloor heating orpipework)

    STUD PARTITIONS

With a suspended woodenfloor, the first thing thatneeds to be established isthe direction in which the

joists are running and if thefloor will support thepartition.

    STUD PARTITIONS

If the partition runbetween two joists, thefloorboards in the areashould be removed andnoggins or trimmers(short length of joists)should be fixedbetween the joists.

    8/33

You can use joist hangers at400mm centres.

This must be done to theFULL LENGTH of thepartition

    STUD PARTITIONS

If the partition is to bepositioned directly overa single joist it issimpler. However if the joist inquestion does notconform torequirements, then itwould need to bereinforced with asecond joist (supportedfrom wall to wall) next

    to it,

Before work begins, checksshould be made to ensurethat there are no electriccables, water or gas pipesrunning along or across the

joists in the path of theproposed partition, whichcould be damaged in thecourse of construction.

Where services are to be found, they shouldbe adequately protected, here we haveused safe plates

    STUD PARTITIONS

    In addition to

being fixed to thefloor, the partitionmust also be fixedto the ceiling.

    The same principlesapply regarding floor

    joist positioning.

    MATERIALS Two timber sizes are

    usually used fortimber partitioning,75mm x 50mm or100mm x 50mm

    rough sawn timber(whites).

    The plasterboard can

be either 12.5 mm, or9.5 mm in thickness, depending on sound /fire requirements

Plasterboard sheets are heavy and may bendor snap under their own weight. Handlesheets carefully and make sure they areproperly supported prior to scoring.

    Cutting Plasterboard Sheets

Place the sheet with the light-coloured facepaper side up.

Measure and mark the sheet to the sizedesired.

    Cutting Plasterboard Sheets

Line a straight edge up with themarks and hold firmly against thesheet.

Draw a pencil line as a guide forscoring. Score through paper andlightly into the core using a drywall

    or craft knife.

Extreme care should be taken when

using sharp tools such as these .

    15/33

    The top is called the

HEAD PLATE', thebottom is called theSOLE PLATE'

    The uprights arecalled the studs'

The Noggins areplaced horizontally tostiffen the partitionand supportplasterboard edges

The Studs must be setout so that theycorrespond to the widthof the plasterboards.

For this reason, whensetting out, one alwaysworks to what is known as'centres'

    This means that; at the

point where two boardsmeet, this will be thecentre of a stud.

    Making a Start (tight areas)

Select a straight length of the timber that will beused as the sole plate, and cut it to the requiredlength. Place it in position on the floor, mark forstuds and transfer to head plate.

Fix a string line the full length of the sole plate(along one edge) to check for it being straight, and adjust at the centre if required beforenailing at the middle.

  • 8/14/2019 Stud Partitions (Gn)

    18/33

Tight areasPlace a short off-cut of

the timber that isbeing used for thestuds onto the soleplate near to one wall,

and measure up tothe ceiling from it.Do the same at theother end, do notassume that both willbe the same length.

    STUD PARTITIONS (tight areas)

Up the WallBefore the head plate can be fixed inposition, lift the two end upright studsthat will be fixed

Their position is established on the walls

by drawing two vertical lines up fromeach end of the sole plate up to ceiling.

  • 8/14/2019 Stud Partitions (Gn)

    20/33

Lift the head plate and place it onto theStuds, carefully raise both the uprights

and head plate together, until the headplate is up to the ceiling

  • 8/14/2019 Stud Partitions (Gn)

    21/33

When studs are in position, secure themto the head and sole by skew-nailing.

Any adjustments can be made at ceilingheight to make plumb before they arepermanently fixed to the walls usingscrews and plugs

    23/33

Line board edge studs to centres and adjustuntil vertical.

Skew nail them to the sole plate, then secureto the head, adjusting as necessary so thatthey are perfectly plumb (vertical).

  • 8/14/2019 Stud Partitions (Gn)

    24/33

When board edge studs are in place, theintermediate studs can be fitted in the

same way so that they are all at either600mm or 400mm centres.

  • 8/14/2019 Stud Partitions (Gn)

    25/33

Having a gauge cut to the exact distancebetween the studs, and temporarily fixed to thehead and sole plate, helps in the correctpositioning of the studs, as shown in thisillustration.

  • 8/14/2019 Stud Partitions (Gn)

    26/33

Each noggin should be measured and cutindividually by measuring along the sole platebetween the two studs that it is intended for.

  • 8/14/2019 Stud Partitions (Gn)

    27/33

Noggins are fixed between each stud tothe full length of the partition

These should be measured from thesole

  • 8/14/2019 Stud Partitions (Gn)

    28/33

Before noggins can be fixed, their positionmust be marked onto the studs, so thatthey will all be in line.

The size of the plasterboard willdetermine the height of the noggins.

The method for fixing noggins in positioncan vary, often skew-nailing on one side, and nailing through the other is used.

  • 8/14/2019 Stud Partitions (Gn)

    29/33

Pre assembly of studwork is often carriedout when there is plenty of room to work in

The thing to remember here is theframework should be made with 12-20mmclearance all round depending on how eventhe walls / ceilings are.
