also provided faculty with the infrastructure to apply for andsecure federal grants for their projects.

Another big thank you to Mike Fernandez, CEO of MBFHealthcare, who has named the last major capital project, theFernandez Family Center for Leadership and Wellness.Scheduled to be completed in the fall of 2009, it will house ourBobcat basketball and volleyball teams and provide a much-anticipated fitness center for the entire St. Thomas community.

Another major area of the campaign was for endowedscholarships. Many of our students are first in their family toattend college and cannot afford a private education without thehelp of scholarships. Scholarship endowments provide fundsto cover the gap between the cost of tuition and federal andstate grants to allow them to attend college without going intodebt. Among the scholarships is a $5 million fund establishedby the Archdiocese of Miami for students graduating from localCatholic High Schools.

While we celebrate the end of the first Capital Campaign,we continue to seek funds to expand our academic programsand attract the best qualified faculty, building our reputation asone the nation’s leading centers for Catholic higher education.

We sincerely appreciate the generosity of each donor to theCapital Campaign. Your support is key to the future of STU.

Capital Campaign, continued from page 1The first project of the Campaign in 2001 set the scene for the

future of the University campus. The dramatic new entrance on37th Avenue, winding through the pine trees towards the Chapelof Saint Anthony, makes an impact on visitor and student alike.

Our second project, the Chapel of Saint Anthony, fundedthanks to the generosity of Wini and Joe Amaturo, has become thecentral focus point of the campus, where we can enjoy its beautyand serenity for religious devotion and reflection.

Our long-term plan to offer a research-based undergraduateprogram for talented minority students in the sciences has cometo fruition with the recent dedication of the new Science andTechnology Building (see article on Page 1). We are grateful tothe Carnival Cruise Lines Foundation for the naming gift for thisbuilding. We now offer nationally unique science programs likethe STEM (Science, Technology, and Engineering &Mathematics) FELLOWS cohort program. Set to begin inJanuary of 2009, the FELLOWS program will offer selectedminority students with outstanding academic records the chanceto pursue research-based majors in biology, chemistry, and math-ematics. These baccalaureate students will be prepared to com-pete for entry into the finest graduate science, mathematics, andmedical programs. State-of-the art research laboratories have

St. Thomas University’s efforts to engage the local community in the sci-ences and to better prepare future students in science, technology, engineeringand mathematics (STEM) fields and to provide research opportunities to under-graduate students culminate in the opening of this new facility. “As wonderfulas the building is, what is more important is what happens inside the building,”added Msgr. Casale.

The research laboratories and core research facilities for chemistry, microscopy, histology, tissue culture, and molecular biology create a uniqueopportunity for undergraduate students to work with faculty on publishableforefront research projects.

“By the time science students graduate from any of our four-year programs,they will have thesame level ofexperience as afirst-year graduatestudent,” said Dr.Edward A. Ajhar,Interim Dean ofthe School ofS c i e n c e ,Technology, andE n g i n e e r i n gManagement.

Patrick & Ana Cordero made a $50,000 dona-tion to name the Law School Breezeway, oneof the school’s most recognizable places andhome to many of alumni’s greatest memories.Mr. Cordero’s gift was inspired by a desire togive back to St. Thomas as the school thathelped him achieve his lifelong goal of beinga lawyer and in recognition of the tremendousprogress the School has made.

Alex Hanna’s first memory from his first day asa student at St. Thomas University School ofLaw is walking through the School’s mainentrance and realizing he was officially on hisway to becoming a lawyer and fulfilling his lifelong dreams.
