Instructor Biographies

Chris Reed, Naui Course Director

Chris A Reed is currently the Fire Chief of the West

Point and has been a professional firefighter for 24

years. Chris teaches for the NY State Department of

Homeland Security, leads the Rope and Water

Divisions of the Orange County Technical Rescue

Team, and is currently a NAUI Course Director. He has

been scuba diving for 30 years.

Timothy Simmons, Instructor andInstructor Trainer

Timothy Simmons has been an educator in the

New York State public school system for over 30

years. He has been a scuba instructor for over 25

years and has an extensive background in the

public safety and search and recovery field.

Randell R. Bailey, Instructor

Randell Bailey is currently a Detective with over

eighteen years in law enforcement. In 201 0, he

and another officer were instrumental in starting

the first emergency service dive unit in their

jurisdiction.

Carlyn Thuestad, Instructor

Carlyn is Red Cross Water Safety Instructorand developed a curriculum for an infantswimming course. She has been a certifiedscuba diver for 11 years and is a NAUIInstructor. She has extensive experience inocean diving and enjoys other types of divingincluding Cenote and Mine Diving.

Recreational Certifications

Open Water: Scuba Diver is our entry level scuba certification course during which you wil l

learn the fundamental knowledge and skil ls to safely scuba dive in open water.

Advanced Diver: The Advanced Scuba Diver course is an enjoyable certification coursefor certified divers who desire additional training, have moved from one diving area to

another and desire local orientation

Rescue Diver: Once you are 1 5 years of age and a certified scuba diver, you canexpand your diving knowledge with a Scuba Rescue Diver course. Learn how to manage

risks and effectively handle l imited in-water problems and diving emergencies, how to

assist and transport divers, and how to perform surface rescues and rescues from depth

involving both boat and shore based skin and scuba divers.

CPR and First Aid certifications are required to complete this course.

Search and Recovery: In your Search and Recovery Diver course you'l l learn about

underwater navigation using natural and compass techniques; the problems, methods,

equipment, hazards, and safety procedures regarding l imited visibi l i ty diving; proper

search methods and techniques; and how to handle l ight salvage or recovery, including

rigging and knot tying.

Nitrox: You wil l learn how to choose the proper blend of Nitrox for your dive profi le,determine maximum depth l imits for your Nitrox mixture, analyze your breathing mixture,

and plan and safely execute each dive. Your instructor wil l teach you about the physiology

of oxygen and nitrogen; advantages, disadvantages, and risks of nitrox; oxygen toxicity;

hazards and precautions of handling oxygen; the concept of Equivalent Air Depth; use of

EANx with standard Air Dive Tables; common gas mixing procedures; and more

Dry Suit Diver: The Dry Suit Diver course wil l give you a basic knowledge and skil lsneeded to minimize risks and gain experience in dry suit diving, as well as train you to

properly use and maintain your dry suit.

Master Scuba Diver: The course is an continuing education certification course for divers

who wish to increase their understanding and enjoyment of diving. Emphasis is on student

participation and practical application of knowledge in open water after a classroom

discussion of subjects.
