TermsThe following is a brief definition of terms you will find in this guide:

Cut Depth – The actual depth attainable, not the overall bur/blade length, while making a cut. A reference line has been added to indicate that length.

Cut Edge – The width of the blade measured from the outside base of the two extreme teeth. (See diagram A)

Height – This measurement is unique to reciprocating-style blades. It is the distance from the top of the blade to the points of the teeth. (See diagram B)

Exposure – The distance a bur or drill extends from the handpiece.

Head Diameter – The width of the bur head at its widest point. (See diagram C)

Head Length – The length of the actual cutting surface. (See diagram D)

Teeth per Inch – Surgical blades vary significantly in width; therefore, the number of teeth per inch is a convenientmeans of comparison. As a general rule, the greater the number of teeth, the more precise the cut.Those blades with the fewest teeth are designed for fast, aggressive cutting.

Total Length – The length of a bur or blade from end to end.

Cautions and WarningsWhen using Stryker burs and blades:

• Read and understand any specific instructions that accompany individual accessories and powered instruments.

• Ensure bur or blade is properly inserted and securely locked in position before running your powered instrument.

• Bending or prying with a bur or blade may cause it to break and leave a piece in the wound site or become a projectile. Always wear safety goggles/eye protection when operating poweredinstruments.

• Never resharpen a bur or blade. This will affect the intended use of a specific bur or blade by changing the overall dimensions of the bur or blade. Any improper resharpening may cause excessive wear on your powered instrument which will affectthe nature of bone removal.

• Multiple reuse and resterilization of a bur or blade will cause wear on the bur and blade and may cause possiblebreakage. A worn bur or blade may cause longer operating time and thermal necrosis from frictional heat build-up.

• For optimum surgical results and to avoid any dulling, thermal necrosis from frictional heat build-up ,or bendingand risk of breakage, we recommend a new bur or blade be used for each surgical procedure.

• Using irrigation while operating burs and blades will help reduce the possibility of thermal necrosis.
