Different technicians approach accounts in different ways and often it is about the service ticket instructions, or lack thereof, that determines how an account is serviced. Depending on the technician, this mentality leads to either too much time in the account or not enough time spent in solving foreseeable problems. Either way, these approaches may lead to increased costs. Training technicians to approach an account as a habitat and being able to identify pest vulnerability points is a good way to prevent these unnecessary costs. But first you must determine how the Tech approaches accounts to ensure that your training is effective.

Allie Taisey – NPMA/Quality Pro (Fairfax, VA)Green, sustainable, environmentally-friendly – Many pest

management firms switched to a green approach before it was in fashion. Others may be looking at their company and services for ways to adjust. Regardless of where you are on the green spectrum, there are customers looking, trying to assess their service options in terms of environmental impact.

From fleet management to service protocols, this presentation will help you understand the aspects of your company that show your true colors. We will discuss potential benefits to revenue and the environment and go over certification options available to you and your clients.

8:30 a.m. – 9:45 a.m. pest exClusionStephen Kells, Ph.D. – University of Minnesota (St. Paul, MN) Scientists have always applied scientific techniques to urban integrated pest management (IPM) in an effort to reduce chronic infestations in accounts, and help improve environmental quality in buildings and safe-guard food safety programs. Recently, a team has initiated a new program called SCOPE (Scientific Coalition On Pest Exclusion).

Approaching exclusion practices scientifically enables a better understanding of how these practices can be effective, the economics of exclusion, and, more importantly, how practices may be better delivered by PMPs with more predictable results. This presentation will discuss current exclusion practices, and how these practices might potentially fit into a pest control business.

9:45 a.m. – 10:45 a.m. Rodents & inspeCtions

Jeff McGovern – The Resource Shop (Jacksonville, FL)

The rodent piece will start with the big picture. Site assessments and evaluations begin with Google Earth, from there a site visit starts with the exterior and verification of the offsite observations. Penetration points are identified along with the rodent pathways to the site and surrounding property. The client must be interviewed in a manner that forms a partnership, this will be explained since keeping the account depends on this skill. In this session we will cover interior investigations, record keeping, and a few treatment strategies that will lead to success.

Jeff McGovern - The Resource Shop (Jacksonville, FL)

German roaches are on the comeback. While we have concentrated on bed bugs, roaches are defying our best efforts causing lost business and dissatisfied clients. The skill of “Forced Monitoring” also known as “Special Analysis and Precision Targeting” will locate harborage zones and allow far more effective control. In this session we will cover tools and equipment to be successful, the importance of partnering with the client, and other keys to create a control program that works!

As Pest Management Professionals, we are custodians of public health and the environment, and care and balance should be our approach to pest management. Pesticides are tools that we use for that care and balance. Therefore, the goal of this presentation is to reinforce to Pest Management Professionals proper and effective use of pesticides in our industry. Proper use of pesticides minimizes the adverse effects and risks to the public, environment, and other non-target organisms including the applicator. In doing so, we not only reduce liabilities, and safe guard public health but also build public trust and confidence in our industry.

In order to succeed in your management efforts, you need to understand the pest’s biology, behavior and ecology; therefore, we will explore these aspects so you can exploit the pest’s strengths and weaknesses. Additionally, after participating in the presentation, you will be better equipped to assist your clientele in reducing the damage caused by these pests by being able to explain the reasons behind these approaches thereby improving compliance in your pest management plan.
