    Thanks to Sandviks close tolerances, you can haveewer shims in the stack without losing any shockabsorbing capability, which can be an eective way oreducing costs while simpliying the shock absorbers.

    More shims, more profit

    However, i you choose to add more shims usingSandviks shock absorber steel, youll be able to oera better shock absorber that can be ftted to moreadvanced vehicles, and this will be reected in theprice your customers pay.     Switching to Sandvik shock absorber steel is often the

    easiest way to improve the condition of your shock

    absorbers. The closer the tolerances of the shock

    absorber steel, the more control you have over the

    oil flow and the damping curve.

    When each shim is of the same thickness and

    flatness, all the shock absorbers will have consistent

    performance, even if they are not manufactured atexactly the same time. In other words, you get better

    control over the damping curve, while your customers

    For more than 30 years, hlins has been manuactur-ing shock absorbers or various sports cars and is now

    market leader in the felds o racing, rally, road racingand motocross. Its strong reputation on the racetrack means that its bright yellow springs can now beseen on high-end road cars such as Lotus and PaganiZonda.

    The shims are at the heart o the shock absorbersthemselves, and hlins imposes extremely stringenttolerance requirements to ensure that all the shockabsorbers on a single vehicle behave identically. Interms o thickness, the specifed tolerance is T4, whichmeans that a shim with a thickness o 0.200 mm musthave a maximum variation o plus or minus ourthousandths o a millimetre!

    We have tried several shock absorber steel supp-

    liers throughout the years, but so ar only Sandvik hassucceeded in satisying our requirements, explainsMagnus Danek, Head o R&D and racing, Automo-tive, hlins Sweden.

    engineer in the world, no model alone can tell youhow a vehicle will behave when it hits a specifc pot-

    hole in a dirt track or in a sand dune out in the desert.Thereore, practical tests must be carried out on theroad or track beore the fnal product goes to market.

    I I go out to a orest, or example, to test shockabsorption in a rally car, I must be able to rely on theshim thickness being correct. A hundredth o a milli-metre either way can cause leakage, which in turn canaect road holding and saety.

    However, bearing in mind that a component asimportant as the shims represents such a small part othe shock absorber's total cost, hlins sees no reasonto choose an inerior steel.

    the number o shims in the stack as required, withoutcompromising on quality.

    components for the operation of the shock

    absorbers, while representing a relatively small

    proportion of their total cost. Therefore,

    choosing a shock absorber steel that guarantees

    optimal shock absorber performance is virtually

    a matter of course.

    Sandvik is a world leading steel company, and the only steelmanuacturer able to supply shock absorber steel with a T4*thickness tolerance and P2* atness tolerance. This meansthat each shim is o identical thickness and atness, allowingthe oil to ow precisely where you want it.

    * T4 means that a shim with a thickness o, or example, 0.20-0.25 mm, has athickness tolerance o 0.004 mm. P2 corresponds to a tolerance o 0.3% othe bandwidth.
