Dear Colleagues, Musicians, and Students,

Welcome to the University of Arizona String Symposium. We are honored to have you here at the Fred Fox School of Music, along with internationally celebrated composer, arranger, and pedagogue Richard Meyer who will offer sessions to UA students, high-school students and Arizona orchestra teachers. The symposium will also feature Maestro José Luis Gomez, Tucson Symphony Orchestra music director, and Dr. Tammy Yi, who joined the music education faculty this fall. This event is made possible by the generous philanthropy of Julie Gibson, longtime friend of the Fred Fox School of Music.

At the Fred Fox School of Music, students experience a thriving string area within a highly demanding, yet supportive atmosphere. The strings program offers an abundance of opportunities for performances and master classes with distinguished guest artists, outreach events, pedagogical development, teaching opportunities and research projects.

University of Arizona string students encounter a wide variety of superb ensemble experiences including the Arizona Symphony Orchestra, University of Arizona Philharmonic Orchestra, Arizona Baroque, Arizona Contemporary Ensemble, HarpFusion, and a robust chamber music program. Our department features a variety of competitions and many opportunities to collaborate across disciplines. Music education students are immersed in a rich program that reaches out into the community, and our music education graduates enjoy a one hundred percent job placement success rate.

Graduates of the University of Arizona go on to rewarding careers as performers, teachers, and advocates, and as music leaders. Whether you are an undergraduate, graduate, or doctoral student studying performance or music education, you will find a home here that challenges, nurtures, and prepares you to make a difference and succeed as a musician in the twenty-first century.

Distinguished Guests

S C H E D U L E & P R O G R A M

9:00 a.m. The First Ten Minutes .............................................................................................................................Room 162 Presenter: Richard Meyer

The beginning of any rehearsal sets the tone for whatever follows. Mr. Meyer will share how he begins a typical string orchestra rehearsal with his own students. He will discuss set-up, how students are expected to enter the room and unpack, his tuning procedures, and he will share his thoughts and materials regarding warm-ups.

10:00 a.m. Back of the Orchestra: High School Students’ Experiences ..............................................................Room 162 with Alternative Seating Practices Presenter: Tammy Yi

This session discusses alternative seating practices (ASP) within a public school orchestra. Traditionally, orchestras have employed hierarchical seating structures through the use of chair challenges and seating auditions in efforts to motivate students to practice. Students reported that ASP influenced their awareness of self and others, and through their perceived experiences, they were able to transfer their awareness to the outside world. This study asserts that using ASP in an orchestra can satisfy measures of musical performance and promote an equitable classroom in which students can form socially just principles to use as members of society.

11:00 a.m. Non-Performance Lesson Plans............................................................................................................Room 162 Presenter: Richard Meyer

Music education goes far beyond performing on an instrument. Mr. Meyer will illustrate and share lesson plans that he uses to teach musical skills and appreciation to his own students. These plans help develop listening skills and knowledge of theory, history and composition, preparing students to become well-educated audience members and well-rounded musicians. Useful to orchestra and band teachers at all levels.

1:00 p.m. Holberg Suite Clinic .........................................................................................................................Crowder Hall Presenter: José Luis Gomez

Maestro José Luis Gomez, music director of the Tucson Symphony Orchestra, will work with 100 high school students from across the state on the Sarabande from Grieg’s Holberg Suite.

This meeting is for members of the American String Teachers Association, led by the president of ASTA-Arizona, Toru Tagawa.

1:30 p.m. Beginning String Players from Scratch ................................................................................................Room 162 Presenter: Richard Meyer

Mr. Meyer will share the system that he has found most successful for starting string players in a “mixed instruments” classroom setting. This system has been used at the elementary (grades 4-6) and middle school (grades 7-8) levels, with classes ranging in size from four to 50. Curriculum and assessment materials will be shared.

2:00 p.m. Orchestra Clinic ...............................................................................................................................Crowder Hall Presenter: Tammy Yi

Fred Fox School of Music faculty member Tammy Yi offers intensive clinics with the orchestras from Rincon/University, Red Mountain, and Perry High Schools. Repertoire includes works by Holberg, Sibelius and Vaughan Williams.

Guest Artists

RICHARD MEYER has been involved with music education for over 16 years. He received his Bachelor of Arts degree from California State University of Los Angeles and taught instrumental music at both the middle and high school levels in the Pasadena Unified School District for 12 years. Currently, he directs the orchestras at Oak Avenue Intermediate School in Temple City, California, and is in charge of the city’s elementary school string program. Mr Meyer is in his eleventh year as conductor of the Pasadena Youth Symphony Orchestra, a 90-piece honor orchestra composed of seventh, eighth and nineth grade students, which he has led in concerts in Vienna, Austria, Carnegie Hall, New York City and in Sydney, Australia. Mr. Meyer has served as a guest conductor and clinician on many occasions throughout California, and has been a member of the Bellis Music Camp staff for 15 years. He has a variety of orchestral and band music in print. In 1989 his composition Celebration (written especially for the 1988 SCSBOA All Southern Honor Orchestra in California) won the National School Orchestra Association composition contest. Most recently, his Geometric Dances won the Texas Orchestra Directors Association composition contest. In 1994 he was the recipient of the Outstanding Music Educator Award from the Pasadena Area Youth Music Council, and in 1997 received the Pasadena Arts Council Gold Crown Award for performing arts. He lives in Arcadia, California, with his wife and three daughters.

The Venezuelan-born, Spanish conductor JOSÉ LUIS GOMEZ was catapulted to international attention when he won first prize at the Sir Georg Solti International Conductors’ Competition in Frankfurt in September 2010, securing a sensational and rare unanimous decision from the jury. Gomez’s electrifying energy, talent and creativity earned him immediate acclaim from the Frankfurt Radio Symphony Orchestra where he was named assistant conductor, a post created especially for him by Paavo Järvi and the orchestra directly following the competition. Gomez started his musical career as a violinist, and by the age of 11 he was concertmaster of the Youth Orchestra of Zulia State, part of El Sistema de Orquestas Juveniles de Venezuela. He graduated in music and violin from the Manhattan School of Music before embarking on a European orchestral career. Deciding to follow his dream to have more creative input and influence on musical direction, he took conducting lessons from Lu Jia, Muhai Tang and John Nelson. After just six months of study he won the Georg Solti competition. Since then he has worked with the RTVE National Symphony Orchestra of Madrid, the Houston and Grand Rapids Symphony Orchestras, National Arts Centre Orchestra of Ottawa, Hamburg Symphony, Basel Sinfonietta and Orquestra Sinfónica do Porto. From 2012 to 2015, he was principal conductor of the Orchestra 1813 Teatro Sociale di Como where he led performances of Mozart’s Le Nozze di Figaro and Don Giovanni, to name a few. The 2016/2017 season saw Gomez named music director of the Tucson Symphony Orchestra. The season also included appearances with Chamber Orchestra of San Antonio, Winnipeg Symphony, Szczecin Philharmonic Orchestra, Orquesta Filarmónica de Gran Canaria, Daegu Symphony Orchestra, and return engagements with the Edmonton Symphony and the Macau Orchestra.
