Strides of Excellence
Welcome to the Spring 2013 edition of Strides of Excellence! The SIUE School of Education (SOE) and its faculty, staff and students continue to innovate, excel and lead through best practices in instruction, dissemination of cutting-edge research and outreach into the community. We continue to provide outstanding academic programs in a wide range of fields related to education and the human sciences, and foster the development of future leaders who have the capacity to create real-world solutions for today’s regional needs.
Included in this issue of Strides are stories highlighting the 2012 SOE Alumni Hall of Fame inductees; we
hope that you are inspired by their stories of success and leadership. Also highlighted is the work of Eta Sigma Gamma, one of the SOE’s many student organizations. Last year, SOE’s students performed more than 11,000 hours of community outreach as part of course experiences and through their volunteer student organizations. The Curriculum and Instruction Outstanding Graduate Student, Amy Ball, continues the academic excellence she demonstrated as a Master of Arts in Teaching (MAT) student in her leadership role as the department head for math and science at the newly formed Father McGivney Catholic High School. The SOE’s exceptional community outreach is illustrated through the work of the Speech-Language-Hearing Center, and its innovative Accent Modification Program. In addition, the work of the School’s faculty within the community is illustrated through Dr. Jeremy Jewell’s collaboration with the Illinois Circuit Court System.
New to the SOE this year are two critical initiatives: the SIUE East St. Louis Charter High School and an International Training Program in Pedagogy that partners the SOE with Northwest Normal University
Message from the Dean
(NWNU) in Lanzhou, China. While the SOE has collaborated closely with the Charter High School (CHS) in the past, beginning in 2012 the SOE assumed governance responsibility for the charter school. This exciting change provides the potential for new possibilities in shared outreach and collaborative experiences for both the faculty and students at the CHS and SOE. The new collaborative with NWNU in China marks the SOE’s first formal international partnership and signals the beginning of future innovative initiatives to bring students and faculty together from around the world.
Thank you for making a difference to the SIUE School of Education through your financial support, time and feedback. Because of you, the SOE is clearly making a positive and lasting impact on the region. We invite you to visit us so that we can share how the School of Education is Innovating, Excelling and Leading into the future!
Sincerely,
Bette S. Bergeron, Ph.D.Dean

Alumni Hall of Fame.
Jennifer Filyaw, ’99 MSEDJennifer Filyaw earned her MSED from SIUE in 1999 and quickly found herself using her education administration skills. After three years of teaching, she was named a school principal in the Shiloh, Ill. school district. Just four years later, she became the youngest school superintendent in the state of Illinois when the district selected her after a nationwide search. Jennifer was named to the “Top 40 Under 40” by the Illinois Business Journal in 2010 and has been recognized nationally for her efforts in dealing with a controversial censorship issue. Her district has received the Bright Star Award for five consecutive years.

Dr. Ed Hightower, ’74 BS Physical Education, ’77 MSED, ’91 SpecialistDr. Ed Hightower has earned three degrees from SIUE; a BS in physical education in 1974, an MSED in 1977 and a Specialist Degree in 1991. As the superintendent of the Edwardsville School District for 16 years, Hightower is widely recognized for his efforts as the first African-American superintendent in the district’s history. He has made a lifetime commitment to SIUE, serving as vice-chair of the SIU Board of Trustees, a member of the SIUE Alumni Association Board of Directors and chair of the Academic Affairs Committee. He is also a nationally-recognized, award-winning NCAA basketball official.
Dr. Arthur Menendez, ’74 BA PsychologyDr. Arthur “Art” Menendez graduated from SIUE in 1975 and became a renowned vision research scientist with the United States Air Force. His cutting-edge research on visual psychophysics was geared toward making aviation safer for pilots. During his prolific career, Menendez authored or co-wrote more than 20 publications relevant for combat pilots but also applied by the field of medicine. One handbook written on how to treat eye injuries resulting from lasers was widely used by the U.S. military during Operation Desert Storm. Although it has been more than 20 years since his death, much of Menendez’s research is still classified for national security reasons.

When it comes to engaging high school students in science and math, creative thinking is often required. This year, the SIUE East St. Louis Charter High School (CHS) started a Video Gaming Club in partnership with the School of Education’s faculty and teacher education candidates to encourage CHS students to think creatively and see the connections between math and science and a popular teen pastime. Students had been asking for a club like this for more than a year, and the new state-of-the-art STEM Learning Center housed within the CHS provided the much-needed space and technology.
Video Gaming: Popular Technology in Everyday Learning
The club of approximately 15 CHS students meets weekly to review video games and learn programming and design. The students work to design new video games based around science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM). By designing and later playing the games, they are able to learn and retain STEM content.
“It’s definitely a student-driven club,” said Matt Johnson, math and science teacher at CHS and Video Gaming Club faculty liaison. “We’re giving our students a chance to learn some useful skills and hopefully develop a cool product in the end.”
The need for enhanced learning opportunities in STEM areas is a growing concern in schools across the country. Using the popular avenue of video games creates an environment for the students to get excited about learning science and math and interested in pursuing STEM-related careers. “One of the main objectives of the Video Gaming Club is career readiness,” Johnson said.
Dr. Wayne Nelson, an SIUE University Fellow for Online Learning and Assessment, was instrumental in forming the partnership between the

Graebe Learning Center The East St. Louis Charter High School is home to the William Frederick Graebe Sr. STEM Learning Center. The Center is the result of a generous donation to the University from Robert H. Graebe, an East St. Louis native, and his wife, Norma J. Graebe. The state-of-the-art classroom features a 70-inch multi-touch SMART interactive LCD board, 3D scanning and printing, HD teleconferencing capabilities, and a fabrication laboratory where users can design and test prototypes with moving parts.
A Student’s PerspectiveCarrie Edson, Senior, English and Secondary Education
Carrie Edson is one of six School of Education students volunteering with the Video Gaming Club at East St. Louis Charter High School. The volunteers conduct club meetings and teach lesson plans they create themselves. “I’m an English major, so this experience has been very different from what I’m used to,” Edson said. “Technology in the classroom is so important; this club really opened my eyes.” Only a few of the volunteers have technology backgrounds but, like Carrie, see the opportunity to learn new teaching techniques.
“ There’s so much going into these games, including geography, physics and math. There is even narrative and character development. Video games are not a waste of time. They can be very educational.”

School of Education and CHS, along with Dr. Randall Smith, a professor in the Department of Curriculum and Instruction. Smith organized the involvement of secondary teacher candidates as volunteers and mentors and jointly facilitated the development of the program’s curriculum.
School of Education teacher candidates are responsible for creating a significant portion of the curriculum taught during meetings. This gives the secondary education students an invaluable early field experience to better prepare them for their future student teaching placement. They also assist Nelson by collecting data and providing insight into the benefits of the club. “Our secondary education students are helping us look at the impact of gaming on society through the lens of STEM,” Nelson said. “It’s been a rewarding experience for all of us.”

International PartnershipThrough a partnership with Northwest Normal University in China and the SIUE School of Education, four Chinese faculty members spent the fall semester at SIUE. During this visit, the faculty experienced United States teaching practices, expanded their awareness of how English is used in American universities and prepared for teaching their respective disciplines in English.
As part of an International Training Program in Pedagogy, SIUE provided opportunities for faculty and student interactions with the Chinese faculty that facilitated cultural understanding and helped to develop potential curricular and research collaborations.
“The School of Education is hopeful this experience will lead to the development of a sustained partnership with Northwest Normal University, which would include expanding the successful training program focused on U.S. pedagogy as well as provide opportunities for SIUE students to study in China, for Chinese students to enroll at SIUE and for faculty and students at both institutions to engage in collaborative research,” said Bette Bergeron, dean of the School of Education.
The School of Education hosted a welcome reception for the Chinese scholars which was attended by the Schools’ faculty, staff and friends.

Eta Sigma GammaPart of the University experience is the chance to expand horizons, create connections with others and build a foundation to support a successful future. SIUE offers more than 200 organizations to support students in any career path they choose. For community health education majors in the School of Education, Eta Sigma Gamma (ESG) is the premier student organization.
A national health education honorary that recognizes individuals for upholding the values of community health and health education, ESG promotes teaching, research and service as well as providing a chance for community health majors to come together and network. “I initially joined to build my resume,” said Crystal Converse, a senior from Geneseo, Ill., and ESG historian. “What I found was a strong support system. The people really make this organization great.”
The ESG student chapter at SIUE counts four faculty members and 32 active students. “Members get hands-
on community health experience, as well as opportunities to network and make friends in the process,” said Gina Goebel, instructor of health education and ESG’s faculty advisor. Chapter activities are chosen by students each year and are oriented toward service and education of the community. “We require a certain number of service and research hours each semester,” Goebel said. “We also make sure to plan fun social events as well.”
ESG supports students and professionals in the health education
field. Members are invited to attend a conference once a year to network with other ESG members and partner organizations, including the American School Health Organization. The connections members make within ESG can lead to many opportunities, including employment. “As an undergraduate student, I earned a scholarship to support my graduate studies through connections I made in ESG,” Goebel said. “Every job I’ve had was found through people I knew within Eta Sigma Gamma.”

Amy Ball didn’t know she loved teaching until she found herself as a substitute at her children’s school. Early in her career she earned a degree in industrial engineering and went on to work as the first female engineering manager for MAC trucks in Winnsboro, S.C. and then for Whirlpool in Blythewood, S.C.
Ball left the workforce when her children were born. At times, she considered returning to engineering but didn’t feel the need to make a major decision. That all changed when her husband passed away unexpectedly and Ball became a single mother of four. “I thought about going back to engineering which would allow me to make good money,” Ball said. “But if I did that, I would not have enough time for my children. That wasn’t an option.”
Ball decided she wanted to teach full time and contacted Bette Bergeron,
dean of the SIUE School of Education, about becoming a teacher. Bergeron put Ball in touch with Angie White, assistant director of graduate programs and together they assessed that it would only take Ball one year to earn her Master of Arts in Teaching (MAT).
In June 2011, Ball enrolled in classes, determined to succeed. Her determination was noted by Dr. Jessica Krim, assistant professor in the Department of Curriculum and Instruction, who nominated Ball for the Outstanding Graduate Student Award. “Amy demonstrated outstanding competence throughout her participation in the program, and went above and beyond the requirements for completion,” Krim said. “She consistently reflected upon the interactive nature of her personal and professional development both in her campus classes and working with secondary students.”
An Unexpected Journey
Ball was surprised when she learned she had won the award. “I was so honored that my professors would consider me,” Ball said. “I didn’t consider myself a typical college student; I had a different skill set.”
Ball graduated in May 2012. She currently serves as the department head for math and science, teaching algebra, biology and geometry at Father McGivney Catholic High School in Maryville, Ill. The school opened in 2011 allowing her to get involved with the school in its infancy. “The school administrators were looking for teachers at the same time I was looking for a position,” Ball said. “I was very blessed to become a part of this family, and I’m excited to witness the building of our team of teachers and to have the opportunity grow with the students.”

Accent Modification Program Creates Opportunities for AllBeing misunderstood can be a frustrating and painful experience. The Speech-Language-Hearing Center within the SIUE School of Education is helping international students and faculty overcome this obstacle by adding the Accent Modification Program to their list of services.
The program helps non-native English speakers improve their pronunciation of American-English. “We’ve had a lot of requests for a service like this,” said Dr. Kathryn Brady, assistant professor in the Department of Special Education and Communication Disorders. “We have many international students and faculty members who feel they need to improve their intelligibility.”
The first year of the program was funded by the SIUE Excellence in Undergraduate Education grant, which Brady helped write in collaboration with Dr. Steffany Chleboun, associate professor in the Department of Special Education and Communication Disorders. The grant was written with the hopes of starting the program and creating more clinic opportunities for undergraduate students. “Our graduate program is very competitive,” Brady said. “Participating in the Accent Modification Program allows our undergraduate students real-world experience and makes them very viable candidates after graduation.”
The free program began with four intensively trained student clinicians and four clients. Brady oversaw the 50-minute sessions between participants and student clinicians, with the support of clinical supervisors Patti Awalt and Diane Connelly who observed all sessions and provided feedback. Participants and student clinicians met one-on-one, twice a week during the academic semester, with 24 sessions total. The program focused on clients’ production of speech sounds, stress and intonation patterns. “The point of the service was not to take away from the client’s natural speech,” Brady said. “It’s about making it easier for international individuals to communicate with people in this community.”
The Center hopes to make the Accent Modification Program a permanent service and expand the number of student clinicians and clients. “Expanding our students’ horizons and meeting the needs of the University community are our main goals,” Brady said.

Building a Kid-Friendly Court SystemDr. Jeremy Jewell, professor of psychology and program director of the clinical child and school psychology graduate program, has always wanted to help children. He started his career as a child abuse and neglect investigator in 1994, but felt there was more he could do to make a difference. After earning his Ph.D., Jewell found his niche at SIUE through the education of psychology students and the formation of a strong relationship with the Madison County, Ill. Circuit Court System.
In 2010, Madison County secured a grant as part of a state-wide initiative to start the Child Protection Data Courts Project (CPDC). This two-part grant collects information on child abuse and neglect cases in Madison County, as well as initiate ways to improve children’s experience while moving through the court and foster care systems. Jewell was asked to collaborate with the grant based on his professional expertise and relationship with the court system. “Madison County has a great track record with state-wide initiatives, and SIUE has an established relationship with the court system,” said Jewell. “It’s a successful partnership.”
As one of his initiatives for the grant funds, Jewell and several SIUE graduate students hosted Dare to Dream in the summer of 2010. Dare to Dream, a two-day youth summit, focused on a group of foster children, their current conditions within the foster care system and their experiences in the court docket.
The summit was successful in helping Jewell and the CPDC committee determine the need for the Court Appointed Special Advocate program (CASA). “CASA consists of volunteers from the community who get to know foster children and serve as a voice on their behalf during court hearings,” Jewell said. “The responses from Dare to Dream made it clear how vital this program would be to the children of Madison County.”
Continuous follow-up with the children who participated in the 2010 summit has also brought about other successes, including implementation of video visitation for children whose parents are in the prison system.
Jewell is proud of the work the CPDC committee has done and the great improvements that are benefiting the children of Madison County. “My main goal is always to help the most vulnerable child,” Jewell said. “My hope is that I am able to inspire and guide my students to do the very same thing.”
“ My main goal is always to help the most vulnerable child.”
