Many people equate happiness with an absence of stress in their lives. In reality, it is actually the successful management of stress in their lives that brings about happiness. The key is the management of stress as it is virtually impossible to just get rid of stress. Stress will always be a part of our lives in this modern society, whether we like it or not. So finding ways to cope or manage stress in ways that turn out to benefit us and keep us moving will actually bring forth the happiness that we seek. This article looks at 4 areas in our lives that we can choose to improve to manage stress and thereby improving our happiness and improving our lives.

1. Help others and feel the positive difference we make around us. When we help others, we feel good about ourselves having helped others in need. By giving to others and making the world a better place, we are actually giving to ourselves and boosting our self-esteem. Examples are: volunteering our time, donations, giving to a cause we feel strongly about.

2. Learn new things, expand our skill set, increase our knowledge base. Learning, growing, and developing ourselves is an important piece of the happiness puzzle, and can also provide excellent stress management opportunities. We can relieve stress by engrossing ourselves in a good book, enrolling in an interesting class, and doing things that keep our mind off of what stresses us, enhance our self-esteem, and possibly provide us with marketable skills that will offer new opportunities in our lives.

3. Make smart money choices. Being in debt, living beyond our means, not having a clear plan to get out of the financial mess that we are in, are all part of financial stress. And this gets worse when people choose "retail therapy" to make them feel better at that moment, when it actually adds to the ever-growing debts that they have. We need to make tough choices and be smarter with our money. Control our spending, cut down on unnecessary expenses like frequent eating out, drinking gourmet coffee, new clothes we do not need (which will actually add to clutter in the house), and put these toward paying off our debts. We will feel less stressed and regain control of our finances and our lives.

4. Get rid of clutter in your home and office. A cluttered environment can cost us in energy, time and even money, whereas a clean, organized home can soothe and provide a haven from stress, a backdrop for fun with friends and family, and a place to feel safe and at peace. Similarly, an organised desk at the office will save us time in looking for information, make us (and our bosses!)
