Dear Friends of the Foundation,

This year’s theme of our annual report is “Strengthening the Foundation of Education.” We are grateful to all of you who helped our Foundation grow over the past year! Our Foundation awarded more scholarships to more students on our college campuses over the past 12 months than ever before. I would personally like to thank each of you that generously helped us to strengthen the foundation of education.

It is gratifying to know that together we are helping another generation of college students advance toward fulfi lling their dreams. On their behalf, we thank you!

Bob BagdasarianPresident, State Center Community College Foundation2013/2014

State Center Community College Foundation is “strengthening the foundation of education.” Our Foundation plays an important role in improving access to our college campuses for the students of our District. Raising money to promote new levels of excellence at each of our colleges and funding scholarships to help support aspiring students as they work to advance their education has been the mission of our Foundation. These

are formidable challenges to achieve, but their successful accomplishment is vital to the growth and prosperity of this Valley.

I thank all of you for your support of our Foundation. Together we continue to strengthen the foundation of education for our families and those generations that follow.

Dr. Bill F. StewartInterim Chancellor, State Center Community College District

THE $1 MILLION GIFTBuilding the McClarty Center for Fine and Performing Arts at Reedley College

Harold McClarty and his wife, Deborah

A generous $1 million gift from the McClarty Family Foundation will help build a Fine and Performing Arts Center at Reedley College. Construction is projected to take place within the next three to fi ve years once all necessary funds are raised. The center will feature a theater to allow performance space for students and community members, as well as an art gallery to display student work. This generous gift is the largest cash gift that has ever been received by our Foundation!

Harold McClarty is a proud Reedley College alumnus and member of the State Center Community College Foundation Board. McClarty grew up in Parlier and Selma, and is currently a Reedley resident. He is a fourth-generation farmer and is president of HMC Farms in Kingsburg. McClarty was inspired to make this wonderful gift based on the positive impact orchestral, theater, and lecture programs had on him when he attended Reedley College in 1969. McClarty’s hope is for all Reedley College students to have the opportunity to enjoy those same types of experiences.

Reedley College President Sandra Caldwell explains, “The McClartys believe in community building and

in philanthropy, and they had been trying to decide what they could do to help the college. They want to make sure that we provide a full and comprehensive educational experience and that includes students having contact with the arts. They believe that students are our future.”

Interim Chancellor Bill Stewart explains, “The McClarty’s gift will make a huge impact on Reedley College and the communities it serves for generations to come. The Fine and Performing Arts Center will bring rich cultural experiences to the campus for students and community members alike.”

Regarding the source of the additional millions the college will need, Caldwell said, “I’ll be looking to others who believe in Reedley College and our students.”

Vikki and Michael Piper, both employees at the Oakhurst Center, chose to honor the memory of their son, Don, through an endowed memorial scholarship. The two annual $500 scholarships awarded to Oakhurst students in their second year of attendance, can mean the difference between continuing their education or suspending efforts due to fi nancial hardship. Vikki, the campus coordinator, explained that some of the biggest fi nancial barriers she hears from students include transportation expenses, accessibility, childcare, and textbooks. Vikki witnesses the balancing act that students encounter every day ranging from being a single parent, managing multiple jobs, speaking English as a second language, being a fi rst-generation college student, and returning to school as an older student.

Vikki and Michael established the Don Piper Memorial Scholarship in order to turn something tragic into something positive. Vikki explains, “Michael and I can really relate to the students here. We both received our degrees taking night classes and understand the struggles of attaining your educational goals as life gets in the way.”

RECOGNIZING FRESNO CITY COLLEGE ATHLETICS Honoring Our Veterans

EMPLOYEE GIVINGDan Wong

On May 27, 2014, Fresno City College unveiled the Mike MendesMemorial Case of Distinction which permanently displays theinaugural Learfi eld Sports Directors’ Cup in the foyer of the OldAdministration Building at Fresno City College. The crystal trophy, which recognizes the best overall collegiate two-year athleticprogram in the United States, was awarded to the Fresno CityCollege athletic department after its 2011-2012 season by theNational Association of Collegiate Directors of Athletics.

The case is dedicated to honor Mike Mendes, a former FresnoCity College student athlete and veteran who played football and wrestled for the school in 1969. Mike went on to participate in the ROTC program at Fresno State where he graduated as asecond lieutenant. Mike was fl ying a training mission for theFresno Air National Guard in Canada when he lost his life onNovember 30, 1982. The case was graciously designed byDarden Architects and was commissioned by the Foundation and Don Larson, who was Mike’s former history teacher, mentor, and friend.

Don Larson who commissioned the Mike Mendes Memorial Case of Distinction to house the distinguished Learfield Sports Directors’ Cup

Dan Wong, a graphic instructional technician in the applied technology division at Fresno City College, gave $20,000 to the photography department. Wong, an alumnus of the FCC photography department, has been a long-time volunteer of the department, and has been a full-time employee since 2006. His passion for photography began with the desire to create a poster of his fi rst car; a car that he still owns to this day.

Fresno City College is one of the largest photographic education institutions on the west coast serving more than 1,400 students each year.

Wong’s gift was inspired by the generosity of the late Hanna S. Barsam, a local legend in architectural photography. Fresno City College was bestowed with funds from the Barsam estate that provided a donation

of $35,000 with $65,000 available for matching funds. The gift established the annual $1,500 Hanna S. Barsam Photography Endowment Award. This award is given to students who demonstrate excellence in

every aspect of their visual endeavors. Dan was the fi rst to contribute to the matching funds campaign.

The Renaissance Feast for Scholars, held in the historic Fresno City College library on March 8, 2014, celebrated the 10th year of travels for the Queen of England and her entourage. The Queen traveled to Scotland, and her guests reveled in the festivities of wine, food, and merriment of the Renaissance period. Hors d’oeuvres were hand passed during the cocktail hour, dinner fi t for a queen was served, and live entertainment fi lled the great hall with Scottish ambiance.

The Renaissance Feast for Scholars is the Foundation’s signature annual fundraiser. The 2014 event raised $136,612 for scholarships that will directly help the students of State Center Community College District.

The Chancellor’s Circle, established in 2002, is an annual membership society for State Center Community College District’s strongest supporters. The 2013 annual dinner, held to thank Chancellor’s Circle members for their generosity, was hosted at the home of Terance and Susan Frazier. In addition to the current Chancellor’s Circle members in attendance, several founding Chancellor’s Circle members were present and acknowledged. The annual $1,000 membership fee provides funds that help support the goals and mission of State Center Community College Foundation. In addition to providing much-needed scholarships for students, Chancellor’s Circle fees help support educational enrichments that benefi t students. Members are invited to the exclusive Chancellor’s Circle Dinner, as well as a series of “luncheon sessions” held at campuses throughout the District. Membership also provides admittance to certain campus theatre and athletic events as guests of the district. We would love to have you become a member of this distinguished group of community-minded individuals and businesses, please contact the Foundation offi ce at (559) 324-6484.

Acknowledged at thedinner were Daniel Martin at the Scholars Society level (contributionsbetween $250,000-$499,000) and Don Larson at the Legacy Makerslevel (contributions at the $100,000-$249,000 level). The 2013event was addressed by Michael Yoshikami, a distinguished alumnusof Fresno City College and the CEO, Founder, and Chairman ofDestination Wealth Management, an independent money managementfi rm that has successfully managed State Center Community CollegeFoundation’s investment portfolio since 1998.

The Heritage Society is comprised of a unique group of individuals who have committed major resources to the future health and viability of State Center Community College Foundation. This includes donors who have chosen the Foundation as a benefi ciary in their estate, either through a will or a charitable trust. These trusts are a means by which the donor can receive current tax deductions with the Foundation receiving future benefi ts. The Heritage Society also includes donors of $10,000 or more who have helped to construct a facility, endow a scholarship, or fund a program that contributes to the future stability of State Center Community College District.

HERITAGE SOCIETY

BOARD MEMBER SPOTLIGHT Bob Bagdasarian

Bob Bagdasarian and his wife, Debra

The 2013-2014 Foundation Board President Bob Bagdasarian has served on the board for 11 years. Born in Fresno and raised in Sanger, Bagdasarian currently resides in Fresno with his wife Debra. He is a registered pharmacist, holding a bachelors of science degree in pharmacy from University of the Pacifi c. He is former President of US Script, a pharmacy-benefi ts management company headquartered in Fresno. He was inspired to become a pharmacist after working at Rexall Pharmacy in Reedley while in high school, receiving encouragement from two local pharmacists, Stan Saroyan and Roger Taylor. More recently, Bagdasarian opened the forty-acre Kings River Winery in Sanger. It is a boutique, small-batch winery that produces 12 varieties of wine.

As an alumnus of both Fresno City College and Reedley College, Bagdasarian supports both institutions through annual scholarships. He has taken various courses leading to a real estate license and fl ight school certifi cations. Bagdasarian supports State Center Community College District as a solution to the low education levels, high gang involvement, and large prison populations in the region. His support for higher education through his work with the Foundation helps provide scholarships to disadvantaged residents and is one way to help “dig the community out of all ofthat negativity.” We thank Bob Bagdasarian and his family for their continued support.

Daniel Martin and Donald Larson were honored at the 2013 Heritage Dinner for their major contributions
