A LETTER FROM THE CVO AND CEO

BRANCH RENOVATIONSOur long range strategic plan calls for the expansion and renovations of our four facilities. This $4.275M improvement plan is underway thanks to the support of many generous individuals, businesses and foundations in our community. During the past year we have completed some extensive work in our Merrimack Branch. We have added six new classrooms in our Early Education Center, added a new space for our School’s Out Program, redesigned the welcome center, increased lighting and visibility in the fieldhouse, and completely renovated the dry areas of the men’s and women’s locker rooms. At Camp Sargent we have started our cabin expansion program to allow us to serve more children during the summer months. We have started the construction on our Nashua building expansion and this new addition is slated to open in January 2017. Further updates for the Merrimack facility are slated for 2017 and we are currently raising money to make those happen. Once the money is raised, we will be continuing our long-term renovation plans. Let us know if you would like to be part of helping us raise funds for these projects.

EARLY EDUCATION CENTEROur Early Education Center at the Merrimack Branch is thriving since the expansion, adding 6 new classrooms. Demand is still high for children to enroll in our program, with a waiting list for many age groups. We care for 325 children in this program. Early childhood learning is proven to be foundational to later school and workforce achievements. The Y offers quality early childhood education to hundreds of very young children, giving their parents the peace of mind to work. At the Y, we believe the values and skills learned early on are vital building blocks for quality of life and future success. That’s why our child care, afterschool and Kid Stop programs are staffed with people who understand the cognitive, physical and social development of kids, and the need children have to feel connected and supported in trying new things.

Dear Friends,

The YMCA of Greater Nashua is 129-years-old and 129-years-strong. As our community has grown, so has our YMCA. We have been proud to help our neighbors learn, grow and thrive. We don’t just strengthen individuals, we strengthen entire communities.

Every day the YMCA gives our community the support it needs to learn, grow and thrive. From advocacy to aquatics, child care to camps, family fun to fitness, mentoring to multicultural experiences, sports to safe places, water safety to wellness, everything we do helps strengthen our community and the people who live here. We are a 501 (c) (3) non-profit charity dedicated to youth development, healthy living and social responsibility. Everyone is welcome; our goal is to not turn anyone away due to the inability to pay.

In these pages, we share stories of lives transformed through our Y. Together, we enrich youth development, improve healthy living and ignite social responsibility. For a better you. For a better community. For a better country. For a better us.

We thank our hardworking and dedicated volunteers and staff for finding innovative approaches to improve the health of our community, help children succeed and offer meaningful ways for our members and program participants to grow and serve others. This innovation is reflected in the many major accomplishments we have seen over the past year, including:

PRESCRIBE THE YPrescribe the Y is a youth program that is confronting childhood obesity. We are proud of the outcomes from our Prescribe the Y initiative! Last year, we helped pave the way to a healthier future for 120 youth in our community. Kids in the program have improved their nutritional habits by 142%; enjoyed 27% more days of physical activity; improved their self-esteem by 23%; and spent 10% less time in front of television and computer screens. Local youth are referred by pediatricians to the Y for the no-cost 12-week program. The child must be between the ages of six and thirteen years old. The family receives a twelve week complimentary Y membership and is expected to fulfill certain requirements like attending key classes and being present in the Y during the participant’s classes to keep the membership active. The kids meet every week and focus on nutrition or exercise. There are also sessions for the whole family on parenting and family wellness strategies, as well as healthy cooking and learning how to read nutrition labels at the grocery store. Participants who successfully complete the full twelve week program get their Y family membership extended an additional six months.

SUMMER LEARNING LOSS PREVENTIONLiteracy has been a huge focus for us. National studies show that children in third grade who are reading below grade level are more susceptible to dropping out in high school, likely leading to a lower wage job for the rest of their life, a higher propensity for substance abuse, incarceration, and lower self-esteem. The Y is helping to combat illiteracy with our Summer Learning Loss Prevention Program based in the Ledge Street School. For 6 weeks this summer, 32 low-income first and second graders who were not proficient in reading participated in an intensive literacy program run by our Y based on a national evidence-based curriculum. Using the STAR assessment tool for evaluation, these students averaged an increase of 112 points over the program, which equals 27 weeks of growth in reading proficiency. Our 2nd graders averaged an increase of 38 points or 10 weeks of growth in reading.

LIVESTRONG AT THE YMCAThe YMCA of Greater Nashua is in its fourth year offering LIVESTRONG at the YMCA, a research-based physical activity and well-being initiative that helps people affected by cancer reach their holistic health goals. The LIVESTRONG at the YMCA program is available to cancer survivors and their families in the Greater Nashua community. The Y engages cancer survivors through an approach that focuses on the whole person. Participants work with trained Y staff to build muscle mass and strength, increase flexibility and endurance, and improve functional ability. In addition to physical benefits, the program also focuses on the emotional well-being of survivors by providing a supportive community environment where people affected by cancer can connect during treatment and beyond. To date, 324 people have enrolled in the program, including 85 this past year. Many participants have stayed active and engaged in the program after graduating by serving as mentors to new enrollees.

YMCA CAMP SPAULDINGThe summer of 2016 was a great time to be a kid in YMCA camp! In partnership with Child & Family Services, YMCA Camp Spaulding hosted 200 youth who enjoyed two weeks of residential camp experience. We earned accreditation from American Camp Association for Camp Spaulding after only our second year in operation, joining Camp Sargent in fulfilling this rigorous accreditation process. The resident camp experience is rooted in helping campers grow into confident, independent, civically-minded adults. Campers learn to become leaders for the causes they believe in, to live sustainably, to care for our shared environment, and to live cooperatively in a culturally diverse community. Two of our favorite camper quotes are, “I wasn’t feeling okay and my friends made me believe I am perfect the way I am.” and “Camp is a great place and it makes me feel a lot better about myself.”

SUPERHERO TRAINING ACADEMYThis year, we graduated 56 students from our second class of the YMCA Superhero Training Academy at the Dr. H. O. Smith elementary school in Hudson. After much success in Hudson, we added another Superhero Training Academy program at the City of Nashua’s Title 1 Preschool program working with 45 low-income four-year-olds. In addition to the initial program, these Superhero’s also received free swim lessons so they can help the world on land and at sea! This program emerged out of discussions with the Hudson School District regarding many first graders having low attendance, school anxiety, low self-esteem, being bullied, acting out or not being engaged in the classroom. Teachers and guidance counselors were concerned about these children, but their needs did not fit into traditional at-risk services offered. Y staff developed Superhero Training Academy to teach the kids about being strong in their mind and body, showing great character and leadership and developing their own superhero persona who works to improve their school community. In essence, being a Superhero in their family, school and community.

DIABETES PREVENTION PROGRAMIn 2015, we launched the Diabetes Prevention Program, which helps overweight adults at risk for type 2 diabetes take steps to improve their health. The evidence-based program provides a supportive environment where participants work together in a small group, facilitated by a trained YMCA Lifestyle Coach, to achieve the program goals of reducing individual weight by 7% and building up to 150 minutes of moderate physical activity per week to reduce the risk of developing diabetes. Participants are referred by their physicians. As with all Y programs, for those not able to afford the program fee, Y Cares Financial Assistance is available.

BOARD MEMBERS:

SWIM LESSONS AND WATER SAFETYThis year we taught 2,519 children and 221 adults how to swim. In addition, we served 71 children in the ‘Safety Around Water’ swim program at a free or reduced rate. Drowning is the second leading cause of death in children under 12, particularly children from low-income families. The Y teaches swim lessons, offers scholarships for those lessons, and partners with school systems to help all kids be proficient swimmers.

LEADERSHIP PROGRAMSThrough our leadership programs, the Y strives to ensure that every young person has an opportunity to envision and pursue a positive future. Building a strong foundation in leadership early in life encourages youth to take an active role in strengthening their communities as adults. Participants in our leadership programs can expect to make new friends, find the support they need and gain the confidence to challenge themselves. Our Leaders Club has grown to nearly 100 youth. Leaders Club is a national YMCA program that brings together middle school and high school students to learn about leadership, volunteer service, and community building. Y-Achievers is a post high school preparedness program. In this program, teens will get the opportunity to explore their interests and potential career options in order to make a plan after high school. Twenty students enrolled in Y-Achievers this year.

We value the partnership between our volunteers, staff, donors and our community collaborations. Together, we are a powerful group of men, women and children committed to bringing lasting personal change to our communities.

We extend our sincere thank you to all who bring the mission of the Y to life every day. We look forward to a very exciting year ahead!

Those who served the Y in the past year.

Sincerely,

Michael Rubino Mike LaChance Chief Volunteer Officer Chief Executive Office

The YMCA of Greater Nashua Board of Directors provides governance, policy, direction and fundraising support for our association. The visionary leadership of these volunteers helps our Y association provide extraordinary experiences for individuals and families throughout Southern New Hampshire and beyond.

YMCA Camp Spaulding was selected as one of several YMCA camps from around the United States to host students from YMCA Colombia in early July. YMCA Colombia partnered with the Colombian government’s Ministry of Education Bilingual Education Department to advance Colombian youth’s command of the English language, leadership skills, and global cultural competence. The goal of the program in 2016 is to send 100 Colombian teenagers to camp for a full immersion in English experience, intercultural exposure, and leadership development program. Camp Spaulding is hosting 10 campers this year. Campers arrived at Camp Spaulding on June 26 and are enrolled in our camp’s first session. The Colombian government is funding this initiative for their students, eight of whom are traveling out of their country for the first time.

Josh Schupack, Camp Spaulding Director, is enthusiastic in his assessment of the partnership, “It was incredible having campers from another country come to us at YMCA Camp Spaulding. Not only were campers improving their English skills, but they actively were teaching our campers Spanish and about Colombian culture. It was just as enriching for our campers to interact with them as it was for them to interact with us.”

Chaperoning the Colombian students was Daniel Enrique Hernandez Cruz, who majored in English and Spanish in his undergraduate studies at and is currently a graduate student at Universidad Internacional de la Rioja, Spain, studying E-learning and social media.

When discussing the program, he said, “So far I can tell you that this is the best way to learn a second language. This experience has been a great opportunity for the Colombian kids not only to learn, practice and meet new friends, but also to learn from another culture, open their minds, see the world in a wide way. Besides that, it has been a chance for us to let American kids and staff at camp know about our culture and exchange ideas, likes and thoughts and some other different things such as music, sports, food, etc. I will definitely recommend and promote back home this kind of projects. Count on us for further projects.” He added that students selected for this trip come from public schools where English is taught at a very basic level. “These students want to learn. They are very motivated.”

As part of the agreement with the Colombian government’s Ministry of Education, Mr. Hernandez Cruz has been sending back daily reports on the camper’s experiences. The government is using social media, including daily Twitter updates, to share the experiences from the campers.

Daniel explained that it’s a competitive process for students to be selected to come to a YMCA camp. Students take national exams in 9th grade and only the best students are considered for this international experience . “It’s very prestigious for students to be selected to go to the United States,” he said. “We take the best students who want to learn about U.S. culture and better their English language skills.”

“ LIVESTRONG is a great program! The people in my group were strangers at first, but after just a couple of weeks, wonderful new friends. The time spent in LIVESTRONG is a wonderful memory and the program proves that we can overcome and live strong every day!”

– Pat Riley LIVESTRONG Participant

The American Cancer Society estimates that almost 9,000 people in New Hampshire will experience a new cancer diagnosis in 2016. Tens of thousands are cancer survivors.

Lifesaving treatment, and the cancer itself, take their toll. Cancer survivors describe living with a “new normal” – emotionally and physically.

“I began the LIVESTRONG program in January, 2015 with very low expectations. I was already exercising regularly and felt that I had adequately dealt with my own personal battle with cancer,” said Ed Soloway, LIVESTRONG participant. He continued, “As I traveled through the different stages of the LIVESTRONG program, I did so with a group of people with different stories but a common goal. We all wanted to come to terms with our new normal and move forward. My own realization was

that I really hadn’t completely dealt with what I had been through, and I slowly began to discover this as a result of my connection with the other members in the group. Some of the others already had a good support group but benefited the most from their physical accomplishments. Regardless of your reason for starting LIVESTRONG, embrace it because it will only help to make you stronger, and that strength will help you move forward. When I began the program, I was Ed who had cancer. When I finished, I was Ed. Cancer will not define me, but I hope that it helps me to focus on what’s really important in my life.”

Last year 85 Nashua-area people reclaimed their health after a cancer diagnosis through LIVESTRONG at the YMCA of Greater Nashua.

In September, the Y took a lead in the Greater Nashua community during Welcoming Week, a nationally recognized week of welcoming and celebration for immigrants, refugees and new Americans in our communities. We were part of a movement through YMCA of the USA joining Welcoming America to implement the program in Ys across the country. The YMCA of Greater Nashua joined the celebration by running mini-events all through the week in each branch and our Merrimack Early Education program. Activities included belly dance clinics, arts activities, potluck meals, visual celebrations in our lobby areas and the launch of two initiatives: Diversity and Inclusion Task Force and the LGBTQ Connection Group. The Y has a long history of welcoming others…from our founding during the Industrial Revolution to opening the first YMCA for African Americans (before the Civil War), to hosting the country’s first ever English as a Second Language class to offering housing to immigrants in the nation’s cities right up through the work we do today through Y-Cares and programs like Summer Learning Loss Prevention and more.

The mission of our Y as being “for all” highlights our commitment to our entire community. By participating in Welcoming Week, we exhibited our support for diversity in our community and highlighted that we are a place of resource for those who may be new to this country. Welcoming Week is a celebration of our community’s diversity and a chance for neighbors—both immigrant and U.S.-born residents—to connect through service projects and other fun events. Together, we’re building a better us.

At the Y, we believe our communities are stronger when everyone feels welcomed.

John CallahanCurrent Board of Trustees (2013-Present)Chair of Board of Trustees (2013-2016) Former Board of Directors (1993-2005, 2007-2009) CVO of Board (2003-2004)

For more than 20 years John Callahan has been actively engaged as a volunteer to drive the YMCA to a higher level of impact to our members and the community. As an active member using the facilities on a regular basis he has provided a perspective to assist the staff in continually improving the Y. He has held virtually every role a volunteer can possibly have in an organization like Y. He personal and business experiences have aided our organization in decision making and well as policy and procedural development. Volunteer involvement can sometimes be measured by the level of Time, Talent and Treasure they give to a cause or an organization.

In the past 23 years John has personally donated at a level of 300. This would be 100 x each of the three areas of measurement:

• More than 100 hours of time per year

• Sharing 100% of his talents to benefit the Y

• More than 100 solicitations of others and personal gifts of over $100,000 to support our financial assistance, programming and capital improvement campaigns.

Some of John Callahan’s specific contributions include:• Joined the YMCA on December 3, 1992 as a founding member at our Merrimack branch• Hired Mike LaChance as CEO (October 2003)• Co-Chair Capital Campaign (2014 – 2016) which has secured $3.2M to date• Heritage Club Member (with wife Carole)• Chair – Heritage Club – His first year as chair his team secured 15 new members• Served as chair to multiple committees including Marketing, Executive, Financial Development as well as being

active in Program, Audit, Properties and Board Development, Annual and Capital Campaign Committees• Has raised more than $500,000 for YMCA supporting our annual and capital campaigns as a volunteer• YMCA Policy Volunteer of the Year (2015)• Volunteering for the Y for the past 23 years• Hosted house parties to support the Y fundraising efforts• Offered the Y the donation of an island on Lake Naticook in Merrimack• All of this is possible because of the support he has from his wife Carole

The day that John joined the YMCA of Greater Nashua the Y had an annual operating budget of $800,000 and was serving 2,300 members on an annual basis. Today, this same Y has four facilities, an operating budget of just under $11M and is serving more than 32,000 area residents. This growth is the result of many great staff and volunteers, but the drive and energy John supplied has a great deal to do with it.

ANNUAL HALL OF FAMEAs the YMCA has a strong history of serving the Greater Nashua community, we would like to recognize those who have embodied our mission and values. Each year, nominations for the Hall of Fame are made by Y staff, members, as well as individuals in the community. We focus on those who have dedicated their time and talent to fulfilling the mission of the YMCA. The Hall of Fame committee has chosen inductees that truly represent the spirit of the Y and have provided opportunities for lifelong personal growth and the development of a healthy spirit, mind and body for all.

In Memoriam: Richard OlsonWe lost a valued and vibrant member of our YMCA community in 2016. Richard Olson, our Chief Financial Officer, passed away on August 9. Dick joined our organization 11 years ago and although he was of retirement age, he chose to follow his passion. If you knew Dick, you probably remember him saying, “People ask me why I’m not retired. Why would I retire? I have the best job in the world.” It brings us a certain level of peace knowing how much the YMCA of Greater Nashua meant to Dick. As much as Dick loved the YMCA, his real passion was for Camp. For this reason we will be using donations to the Richard Olson Memorial Fund for a “Dick Olson Buddy Bench” to be placed at Camp Sargent. Additionally, these funds will be used for Camp Sargent scholarships next summer. The bench will be a constant reminder of a great man and a buddy to everyone he met.

OUR MISSIONTo instill values and provide opportunities for lifelong personal growth and the development of a healthy spirit, mind, and body for all.

OUR CAUSEWe know that lasting personal social change comes about when we all work together. That’s why at the Y, strengthening community is our cause. Every day, we work side-by-side with our neighbors to make sure that everyone, regardless of age, income or background, has the opportunity to learn, grow and thrive.

OUR FOCUS• Youth Development – Nurturing the potential

of every child and teen.• Healthy Living – Improving the nation’s health

and well-being.• Social Responsibility – Giving back and providing

support to our neighbors

OUR IMPACTAt the Y, we change lives. We provide a greater sense of achievement, belonging, meaning and inspiration in the more than 30,000 individuals we serve. Our impact is felt when a child learns a new skill, when a teen is inspired to greater heights, when a family spends more quality time together, when a cancer survivor feels stronger, and when a senior feels connected. More than that, the impact on those 30,000 individuals ripples throughout the community, making our community stronger.
