Strength in our leaders

Thanks to your support 2007 was another busy and exciting

year for Children’s Friend. The year brought new leadership with a

new Executive Director and a new Board President. Our Dads Making

A Difference program went into full swing. Children’s Friend took

action to help continue the Family Outreach Program, ensuring that

at-risk newborns receive vital home visits. We ended the year with

notice from the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services

that they would assist us in expanding our Project Connect program

which works with substance affected families involved in the child

welfare system.

While we had an exciting and productive year, unfortunately all is

not good for our mission of promoting the well-being and healthy

development of Rhode Island’s most vulnerable children. Decisions

by state leaders are being made for political and economic reasons

which are having negative effects on at-risk children. In addition,

we have seen other child-serving organizations lose their focus and

require outside interventions.

Reviewing our history helps to keep things in perspective. There have

been many trying times in our past. Children’s Friend has always

marched forward and strived to improve the lives of Rhode Island’s

most vulnerable children. With your continued support we will

overcome challenges and make lasting improvements in the lives of

these children.

As we prepare to celebrate our 175 th anniversary in 2009, we

will continue to set the highest possible standards while monitoring

ourselves to ensure that we are meeting those standards. We will

advocate to our state leaders to make decisions for our children

based not solely on short-term financial considerations, but on best

practices for the benefit of children.

Thank you all for your support of the mission of Children’s Friend.

Each and every one of us plays an important role in the success

of this great organization. We look forward to 2009 as we work

together in the fulfillment of our mission and to the celebration of

both our history and our future.

Children’s Friend promotes the well-being and healthy development of Rhode Island’s most vulnerable children by providing flexible, effective and culturally relevant services that support and strengthen families and communities.

endeavor to be before them.” Andrew Combe

“If we don’t stand up for children,

then we don’t stand for much.”

Marian Wright Edelman

Early Intervention

When a child is born with developmental delays a family needs

help, guidance, and support from experts. This year, our Early

Intervention Program’s multidisciplinary team served 253

families, 90% coming from Providence, Pawtucket and Central

Falls. These children, birth to 3 years of age, are experiencing or

are at risk of experiencing developmental delays from condi-

tions including autism, Down Syndrome and cerebral palsy. Our

Early Intervention Team consists of physical and occupational

therapists, speech/language pathologists, educators, nurses,

nutritionists, social workers and interpreters.

Dads Making a Difference

Dads Making a Difference, a federally funded project that

began in October 2006, provides support for Children’s

Friend to fully implement its Father Involvement Initiative.

This program is unique because of its focus on working

with fathers, including teen-age fathers, incarcerated fathers,

step-fathers, and biological fathers who are not living in the

home.

The goals of Dads Making a Difference are to: help fathers

who want to provide nurturing parenting for their children,

to develop and maintain healthy relationships with others

involved in their child’s life, and to contribute fully to their

child’s support through assistance with vocational and

educational goals. Services include home-based visitation,

case management, and father/child support groups.

Highlights of our first year:

Extensive outreach efforts to fathers and service providers both within Children’s Friend and in the broader community.

Services to 59 fathers provided through parenting groups, parent-child community events, community and home visitation.

62 staff members attended training sessions to become prepared for their work with fathers.

Dads participated in summer outings to Roger Williams Park, Slater Park, a car show, bowling, McCoy Stadium, and barbeques.

Project ConnectIt’s hard enough being a parent these days, but even more

difficult if you are battling a substance abuse problem. Project

Connect, the only community based substance abuse program

in Rhode Island, received a 2.5 million dollar grant from the

U.S. Department of Health and Human Services to expand

its program statewide, nearly doubling services to the com-

munity. This expansion will build on Rhode Island’s capacity

to address those issues involving children who are at risk or

negatively impacted by a parent’s use of methamphetamine

or other substance abuse.

Children’s Friend will be collaborating with the Rhode

Island Department of Children, Youth & Families, to expand

Project Connect from six communities to all 39 cities and

towns in Rhode Island. This intense, home-based service is so

successful that over the past few years, 86% of infants born

to parents in the program were born free of illicit substances.

The Project Connect Coordinating Committee will also

establish a statewide preparedness plan for Rhode Island to

respond to the anticipated methamphetamine crisis.

Investing In Our Children LuncheonRhode Island business leaders, elected officials, and other champions for children in the community

joined together for the Children’s Friend 5th annual Investing In Our Children Luncheon on

September 24 at the Westin Hotel. Thanks to board members Mary Cram and Julie Casimiro for

chairing the luncheon committee.

Strength in our community

The Walk for Children Despite a few raindrops, a dedicated and fun-loving group

of family and friends participated in the 2007 Walk for

Children held on June 9 at Roger Williams Park. This year’s

Walk helped raise awareness to the number of children living

in poverty in Rhode Island and of the importance of investing

in these vulnerable children early. Special thanks to Co-chairs

Mike Dooley and Mike Spirdione and to the many committee

members, staff, and volunteers who together made this one

of the agency’s best walks ever!

The Holiday DriveThe 2007 Spirit of Giving Holiday Drive was another

overwhelming success. For the third year in a row, employees

of Bank of America were the top corporate sponsor of

families. Panera Bread, the University of Rhode Island Admin-

istration Department, Toys for Tots, and Joe Silva all conducted

toy drives on our behalf.

Partridge Snow & Hahn Spaghetti DinnerOn March 20 Partridge Snow & Hahn hosted a Spaghetti

Dinner for our families to enjoy. This year, Partridge Snow &

Hahn doubled their efforts by expanding the dinner to

include Children’s Friend locations in Providence and Central

Falls, feeding more than 250 children and parents! Families

enjoyed a traditional Italian meal, music, books, and face-

painting. Many thanks to our ever loyal and supportive friends

at Partridge Snow & Hahn who also support us throughout

the year with free legal counsel, clothing drives, monthly

donations of baby car seats and diaper bags, and sponsoring

families at the Holiday Drive.

Partnering with The Junior League of Rhode IslandThe Junior League of Rhode Island recently launched a new

community partnership with Children’s Friend focusing on

improving children’s literacy. We kicked off the partnership

by co-hosting a Harvestfest where dozens of children from

Central Falls and Providence enjoyed Autumn-themed craft

activities.
