STREET PHOTOGRAPHY

MY PICTURES

• When we started this project, we went to London for a photography trip. This trip was beneficial because we were able to try getting our own images using the idea of street photography.

ANNOTATIONS OF PHOTOS.

I called this picture ‘Travel in London’ because it represents 4 different modes of transport in London- walking, biking, busing and using a taxi. I also like how you have Big Ben in the background.

In this photo, I edited the colour, as we went to London on a gray day. This way, the picture is much lighter so it is easier to see what is going on in the picture. I also cloned some of the road to get rid of the date and time that the photo was taken.

ANNOTATIONS OF PHOTOS.

This is the same picture as above, but I decided to edit it twice because there was a lot that could be done with this picture.I edited all of the pictures using Photoshop.

In this edit, I added another layer to the image, and to the top layer, I adjusted the colour so it was just black and white. I then used the eraser on the bus so it would have its original colour. I thought it was effective because the red double decker bus is quite iconic to London travel.

ANNOTATION OF PHOTOS

Looking at the photos after I put them on the computer, I liked this one because it looks like the bus and the bike are having a race.

I started by cropping so the bike would stand out. I then made the photo black and white and erased the colour back into the bus and the biker’s helmet.

ANNOTATIONS OF PHOTOS.

This photo is of a London Kiosk, which is essential to London trade because of the tourism aspect, ad many tourist will purchase London/England merchandise.

To get rid of the date and time, I simply cropped the photo this time.

As with the last photo, I edited it to be black and white on the top layer, and then I erased some on the black and white to give back some of the original colour. I did this on the flags and umbrellas so they would stand out. Because the colour is bright, the eyes are drawn to it.

ANNOTATIONS OF PHOTOS.

This photo was taken outside of a McDonalds.

I like how I have kept the colour on the bins because the mix of red, green and yellow really stand out against the black and white.

ANNOTATIONS OF PHOTOS.

I really like where this photo was taken because this whole underground piece was full of professional graffiti (and some not!).

However, I really like this edit because it really makes the artwork stand out. To achieve this effect, I went to adjustments on Photoshop and clicked on ‘Hue and Saturation’ before playing with the adjustments to achieve the graffiti in green and purple. I like this because it still looks like the graffiti is done in purple and green.

ANNOTATIONS OF PHOTOS.

I really like this picture because it looks like the dog is chasing the woman on the bike, as we had seen this dog running around after a lot of people.

When editing this photo, I cropped it to make more focus on the woman and the dog, and then adjusted the colour to make them stand out, as it was a very cloudy day up there.

ANNOTATIONS OF PHOTOS.

I edited this photo in two stages, as two different edits. I started just by rotating the picture.

I then made the picture black and white for the background. I then cropped the photo. I like it because it is quite camouflage against the background now.

ANNOTATIONS OF PHOTOS

This was on the way to the Tate Museum. I liked how bright the end was so decided I could edit it there.

I started with cloning the pavement to get rid of the date. I then used the clone tool to get rid of the background. This also helped make the people look like silhouettes. This really looked like the light at the end of the tunnel!

MATT STUART- STREET PHOTOGRAPHER

• Matt Stuart was born in 1974 in North West London. He didn’t know what he wanted to do with his life, so his father had introduced him to several other hobbies, such as skateboarding and Kung Fu. However, he didn’t really have the flair for it, so his father introduced him to photographer, and since then, he has developed as a street photographer.

WHAT I LIKE ABOUT HIS WORK

CONSIDERATIONS OF A STREET PHOTOGRAPHER

Do’s• Ask for permission of people if there aren’t too

many in a shot. Especially if it has people’s children in the shot.

• Let the person know what the image is for. For example, when asking them, tell them why you need the image (e.g., a photography assignment etc.)

• Be polite. If someone says yeas to being in a picture, use manners, but if they say no, say ‘okay, thank you anyway’ and then leave them alone.

• Decisive moment- look for the opportune moment to take a picture.

• Tell them if the image will end up on the internet. This is because some people do not want to be on there, and do not want their children on the internet either. Honesty!

• Make sure it is not against their religion. (This mainly applies because the Amish and Druze Sects are not allowed to be photographed because of religious views.)

Don’ts• Take photos of homeless people. They haven’t

much dignity as it is. If you really want to, ask them or offer them money.

• Don’t exploit people. For example, don’t take a picture of a Muslim drinking, as drinking goes against their religion. It was be exploiting them to do so.

• Don’t take degrading or insulting photographs. • Take pictures of people with disabilities without

permission. This is because they may not want it and it can be seen as harming as they may feel laughed at if they knew!

• Forget to check all of your equipment. This can range from batteries and memory card to money. You won’t get very far if you don’t have money for food or extra batteries if you need it. Also don’t forget to dress appropriately. It wouldn’t be good to be walking round for a whole day in heels- it would hurt! So remember to dress appropriately, have enough money and don’t forget your equipment!
