i adopted Waylon (left) from the humane Society over 12 years ago. Sweetest boy...my companion. he never even hissed until he met the second cat (right) who i adopted with my family a few months ago. i wasn't sure if i made the right decision since Rizzo is young, but now the two love each other as much as we love them. Thank you KhS!

Because of You

Three years ago i came into the Main campus in search of a dog, and i adopted my sweet Belle, formerly "Bisky." i fostered her for a whole year while she had heartworm treatment and then a year to the date later she was declared heartworm free because of you guys and the care you gave her. Thank you so much for giving me my dog! She went from being shy and sad when i first met her to a dog that is loving, loyal, loves car rides and belly rubs. Thank you!

Karen Richards

Happy Adoption

We just adopted niko from a feeders Supply adoption center in May, and we are absolutely thrilled with this little boy. We wanted to say thank you for uniting us with our fur baby.

Letter from Lori

On the Cover

We're helping both adult horses and foals at the KHS Equine Rescue Barn.

The Paw Street Journal is a quarterly publication of the Kentucky Humane Society. Questions or comments may be addressed to the Public Relations Department at (502) 515-3152 or [email protected]. Circulation: 12,000

By the Numbers(Jan. 1, 2016 – Jun. 30, 2016)

2,952 shelter pets found homes in the first six months of this year. of those, 1,098 were felines and 1,854 were canines.

5,071pets were spayed or neutered at our high-quality, donor-supported S.n.i.P. clinic from January through June. Since opening in 2007, the clinic has altered more than 88,000 cats and dogs from Louisville and surrounding counties.

every day at the Kentucky humane Society (KhS), we meet good Samaritans.

People like Mark early, who saved a litter of two-week-old kittens after their mother was hit by a car.

Mark and his wife, Marybeth, had first noticed the little family five days prior. The mother cat and her babies had taken up residence in their garage.

Since the kittens were just born and the mother was feral, the couple’s plan was to make sure the kittens were safe and protected in the garage for a few weeks until they were weaned, and then call KhS for advice.

But that plan went out the window when Mark found the mother cat dead on the street. he knew those kittens needed help. now.

Mark searched the internet looking for how to feed such young kittens. he discovered they needed special formula and went out to buy supplies.

he set his alarm for every 3 hours and slept on the couch so he could feed them. The next morning, Mark brought the kittens to our Main campus on Steedly Drive.

camille, the KhS admissions clerk, asked Mark if he wanted to name the kittens. he called the biggest kitten chubby. The two other striped kittens he named Tiger and Tabby. he called the little black kitten grumpy. and the cream kitten he named Jasmine.

The playful, happy kittens spent six weeks in a KhS foster home. Recently, they returned to the shelter to be spayed and neutered. i’m happy to report that all have found loving homes.

i wanted to share this story with you because, along with Mark early, you played an important part in these kittens’ rescue and adoption. every day, we take in needy dogs, cats and horses. We are able to do this because of supporters like you.

Whether you support us through donations of money or time, you too are a hero to our animals. KhS is a private nonprofit agency, and we depend on people like you to help us fulfill our lifesaving mission.

Thank you for being a lifesaving partner with us. animals such as chubby, Tiger, Tabby, grumpy and Jasmine are grateful for your support.

in gratitude,

Rescue

Starving and Ill Horse, Olive, Is Rescued

While working with horses in eastern Kentucky this spring, our equine c.a.R.e.

Team discovered olive, a free-roaming Kentucky Mountain horse, in terrible shape. The mare was severely emaciated and sick from a respiratory infection.

"She was so desperate for nutrition that she was eating bark from an olive tree, so we named her olive," said Lori Redmon, President & ceo of the Kentucky humane Society.

The equine c.a.R.e. Team knew they couldn’t leave this horse to die alone on the mountain. a veterinarian determined she was already near death and needed immediate medical intervention.

With permission from the local county judge executive, our team quickly mobilized and brought olive to Rood & Riddle equine hospital in Lexington,

where she was diagnosed with pneumonia, a bacterial infection and heaves, which is similar to asthma. olive spent almost a week at the hospital receiving intravenous drugs and nebulizer treatments.

her spirits and will never waned, however. KhS equine staff member Brett cissell recalls being struck by “her willingness to go with us. from the moment we picked her up, and every trip after, she would follow us without hesitation.”

olive then began her recovery at our KhS equine Rescue Barn, where we could monitor her carefully and start her path to a full recovery. She began to build weight and strength and showed signs of healthier breathing.

once she was healthy enough to be given a riding assessment, she was “off

to school” at our equine rescue partner Dark horse Training center, which is owned by Brett's wife, Mary Rose.

“We couldn’t believe our eyes when during her first assessment we discovered she was fully ready to ride!” says Brett. “She’s going to make somebody a great friend and companion horse.”

Prem Durham, owner of Lakshmi farms in anchorage Ky, met olive and offered to foster her. But fostering didn't last long: Prem quickly decided to adopt this gentle horse.

found sick and near death, olive is a fantastic example of how an unwanted rescue horse can be given a new life.

Love and CareThe KHS Equine Rescue Barnnestled in the rolling hills of central Kentucky lies a farm, and on that farm is a horse barn generously leased to the Kentucky humane Society at no cost by a KhS supporter. The KhS equine Rescue Barn is a place we keep foals and horses in need of round-the-clock care and socialization.

at the Rescue Barn our dedicated staff work to rehabilitate horses that have been neglected, starved or have other medical needs that require treatment before being placed in a home. after they are healthy, they move on to a training assessment to determine if they are able to be a riding partner and for what purpose. horses like olive have spent time at the barn, as have the 26 orphaned foals KhS took in this year.

equines can be orphaned for many reasons and come to KhS as young as two days old. at this early age they are fragile and need round-the-clock feeding and care. They also get handling, training, plenty of socialization and acclimation to farm life.

When babies are in the barn, the entire facility becomes a neonatal unit. The foals are susceptible to illness, and they are lacking the care, protection and education they would receive from their mother. Because of this, depression and anxiety are common in orphans. They need help learning how to "act like a horse." We often use a companion horse to help with the foals' socialization, and, of course, the volunteers and other animals at the barn work to keep the youngsters from feeling lonely and afraid.

any foal who goes through our program learns to trust and seek affection from humans.

"in addition to making sure the babies are healthy, we want them to be happy and confident," says Bryce gill, KhS equine Development Manager.

We couldn't help these foals and horses without our barn, and we couldn't do it without your support. Thank you. U

Loving the Special Petsan old dog loses his home. a blind cat has no place to go. There are many reasons older and disabled pets end up homeless. Whatever the reason, they find themselves at the Kentucky humane Society (KhS), where they wait for a home with understanding, compassionate people.

one such pet was Marty. Marty’s owner had cancer, and as her husband watched her fade away, Marty was far from his mind. When his wife did pass, the grieving man knew he just couldn’t take care of the 15-year-old blind and deaf dog the way his wife had. The husband decided to surrender the dog to his county shelter.

The chances of Marty being adopted from the rural shelter were slim. But then KhS agreed to take him. he found a temporary home in an office, where we could monitor him and give him extra love. We gave Marty everything we could, but we knew he missed his old routine, his time sleeping next to someone on the couch. no matter how good we were to this old man, we weren’t home.

Many people hesitate to adopt a special pet. They assume the pet won’t be around long and that there will be bills. They prefer a puppy or kitten. Pets like Marty often get overlooked. But we shared Marty’s story on facebook. We didn’t know if anyone would give Marty the home he so wanted and deserved. We waited for the right person to come along.

and that person was Janet Meek.

Janet has a love for older and disabled dogs, “older and infirm dogs are so mature and appreciative of their humans. They pick up on your cues, and they truly want to be part of a family,” she explains.

Janet came to the shelter to meet Marty and knew right away that he needed to come home with her. She realized she might not have Marty for long, but she also knew that there are no guarantees with anyone or any pet. Life is what we are given each day, and Janet wanted Marty’s each day to be in a home with a loving family.

The two went home, and Marty immediately made friends with the other senior dogs Janet loves and cares for. he had a special place in her chair when she was working. They had a wonderful month together before Marty passed away.

“The veterinarian thinks he may have had a brain tumor,” Janet said wistfully, “but he was happy and loved until the end.”

Since that time, Janet has adopted another special needs dog. When asked why she chooses dogs who are old or infirm, Janet states that they need love and give love like any other pet, and they deserve a person who can love them for who they are.

“adopting special needs and older pets has its own set of challenges, but so does adopting a puppy. i just happen to like dogs who are calm, loving and in need of someone who cares,” she says.

adopting an older or special needs pet can have both upsides and down. But the love they give is a fantastic gift, and one that Janet hopes more people will come to appreciate.

Adopting a Special Pet

it takes the right person to adopt a senior or disabled pet. however, those who choose these pets find them to be grateful companions. They love you with all their heart, and you become their whole world.

consider adopting a special needs pet! They can be loving and loyal, patient and adaptable. They just need a chance. could that chance be with you? U

We Need Your HelpSpecial needs and elderly pets take time to adopt, and while they wait, they need your help. if you can't adopt at this time, won't you donate to help a special pet? The money you give supports our mission to get all the pets under our care adopted.

Pet Health Insurance Adds Peace of Mind Did you know that each cat or dog adopted from the Kentucky humane Society comes with 30 days of pet insurance? adopters just need to contact Petfirst Pet insurance to receive this benefit.

“We encourage every adopter to sign up at time of adoption,” says courtney Strecker, KhS adoption Supervisor. “Petfirst Pet insurance gives adpters the added peace of mind.”

after 30 days, adopters can continue the coverage by paying a monthly fee, which varies depending on the species, age and breed of the animal. insurance does not pre-existing conditions

but has optional coverage for preventative care.

nancy Lee, mother to gizmo and Jake, knows first hand

how beneficial pet insurance can be.

nancy brought gizmo to the veterinarian when he wasn’t feeling well. after undergoing several expensive tests, gizmo was diagnosed with cushing’s Disease. Luckily for gizmo, his mom has insured him with Petfirst Pet insurance, and she received

reimbursements for the test, medication, and office visit.

nancy has since recommended Petfirst Pet insurance to several friends and family. “i wish i would have had it years ago. it would have saved me thousands of dollars,” according to nancy. U

Twenty years ago, the Kentucky humane Society (KhS) and feeders Supply launched a lifesaving partnership that has resulted in over 40,000 dog and cat adoptions.

The late Roy gibson – founder of feeders Supply – first offered a permanent pet adoption site to KhS in 1996.

at the time, no pet store in Louisville devoted permanent space for pet adoptions to a shelter, and few pet stores in the country had tried it.

"My dad was very concerned about pet overpopulation, and he wanted to do something about it," says Pam Longwell, feeders Supply President and ceo. "he believed that shelter animals deserved the chance to find wonderful homes."

at the Springhurst store, KhS set up adoptions in a little room that was not much bigger than a storage closet, remembers Beth Spillman, manager of the Springhurst feeders Supply. There was enough room for about three crates for dogs and three cat cages. a KhS adoption counselor was there every hour that the store was open.

To the delight of everyone, adoptions took off. over the years the Springhurst location has gone through two renovations and can now house about 10 adoptable animals.

“Last year more than 400 dogs and cats found homes just at the Springhurst store,” says KhS adoption counselor Rick Leist, who has worked at the Springhurst location for four years.

“i enjoy seeing many of the animals i’ve helped find homes return to the store with their families.”

after the success of that first adoption site, KhS and feeders Supply quickly added more. in 2016, the partners opened their eighth adoption center, this time at the Pewee Valley store. Last year, over half of KhS’ 6,300 adopted animals found homes through a feeders Supply location.

"This lifesaving partnership truly is unique and one that we are so proud of," says Lori Redmon, KhS President and ceo. "Without feeders Supply, we would not be able to take in so many homeless pets." U

Sandy gutermuth’s favorite word is “joy.” She has that word displayed on prints and décor throughout her cheerful home in Louisville.

it’s a reminder to her of what’s important in life: bringing joy to others. and bring joy she does – from the children she taught as a teacher's aide before she retired to the many animals she helps at the Kentucky humane Society through her philanthropy.

originally from Paducah, Sandy has lived in Louisville since she graduated from the university of Louisville with a degree in dental hygiene. one of the first things she did after graduating was adopt her first cat; since then, she’s never been without an animal for very long.

“i’ve always adopted,” she says. “There are just so many needy shelter animals that it breaks my heart.”

Sandy’s “soul dog” was Sam, named after Sam-i-am from a Dr. Seuss book. in the mid 1990s she and her son, Brandon, went to an open house at the Kentucky humane Society. They spotted a cream-colored six-month-old puppy with gentle brown eyes.

“The moment Brandon and i saw him, we said ‘that’s our dog!’” she says.

When Sam passed away at 15, Sandy was devastated. Then she saw an eight-

week-old Beagle mix at the KhS adoption center. The puppy looked so much like Sam that she stopped in her tracks, astonished. She adopted Scout on the spot.

Scout turned out to be a challenging puppy—chewing everything and destroying a prized new rug. But once Sandy makes a commitment, she sticks to it. She wasn’t going to give up on Scout. at six years old, Scout is now a happy dog who loves chasing chipmunks in Sandy’s cottage-style garden and snoozing on his own bright-red armchair.

in January, Brandon moved back to Louisville after years living in connecticut and Minnesota. Brandon inherited his mother’s love of animals, and he is currently working in customer service at the St. Matthews feeders Supply.

That’s where he met Stella, a mixed breed dog who was misunderstood. at the KhS adoption center, Stella barked when she saw new people and animals. But Brandon got to know her over the weeks. he became convinced that Stella was meant to be his.

Sandy agreed, and now their home is complete with Scout and Stella, who loves belly rubs and who sleeps in Brandon’s room each night.

With her deep love for animals, Sandy

has chosen to become a KhS Lifelong friends member by leaving KhS in her will.

“animals can’t speak for themselves. They need people to take care of them,” she says.

Sandy’s compassion will continue to help needy animals far into the future, according to alisa gray, KhS Development Director.

“Sandy has been an amazing supporter of our animals for many years, and we are so honored that her legacy of compassion and joy will continue,” says alisa. U

Volunteer DeTails

Love animals and want to give back? Become a volunteer at events! each year, the Kentucky humane Society raises money and shares its mission through events. Volunteers take care of registration, mingle with adoptable pets and so much more. interested in learning more? Visit our website, kyhumane.org or email [email protected].

Making Events Workby Megan Decker, PR/Marketing Assistant

Scott fitzpatrick began volunteering for KhS after moving back to Louisville nine years ago. Scott had always had a passion for animals and wanted to find a way to give back to the community, serving the creatures he loved most. While he started out as a canine coach walking and working with the adult dogs, soon he found himself volunteering to work KhS events and fundraisers.

Today Scott volunteers at KhS events such as Tuxes & Tails, Waggin’ Trail, Dog Days at the Park and Picture your Pets with Santa. Because he has worked so many of the large events in so many different positions, Scott is KhS’ “go to” man when it comes to the really tough jobs. he doesn’t mind that one bit, though! Scott says he enjoys doing whatever he can to make the events positive and fun for both attendees and volunteers.

“i have worked in registration and animal handling at Waggin’ Trail, checkout and silent action at Tuxes and Tails and as Santa and an animal handler at Picture your Pets with Santa. Santa is a great experience that i would recommend to everyone. Being included in pictures with parents, kids and family pets is an honor!”

out of all the events Scott has worked for KhS, his favorite is the Dog Days at the Park. During this event, baseball fans bring their dogs to the ballpark to enjoy the game. human tickets for the game are $8 while dog tickets cost just $3. all proceeds from the dog tickets support KhS. The next Dog Day at the Park is august 23.

“it is great to see so many different breeds and so many dogs having fun with one another. you can’t help but leave the event with a smile on your face,” says Scott.

When Scott isn’t working hard for KhS, he’s working as the chief financial officer for the iKeyless company in downtown Louisville. Due to his intense work schedule, Scott doesn’t have enough time for any animals in his everyday life. instead he uses his time with KhS to provide the animal interaction he needs and has made many friends in the organization.

“My association with the Kentucky humane Society has been one of the most rewarding things i have experienced. i have made some great friends and worked with some of the sweetest animals one could hope to meet. if you are considering volunteering, i highly recommend it!” U
