They make short work of their instructive mission and spend their energy on things that require it: flatfootdancing, jug playing, shouting."

, CCD's second full-length Nonesuch disc, was produced by Nashville stalwart Buddy Miller, the go-to guyLeaving Edenfor artists ranging from Solomon Burke to Robert Plant to Emmylou Harris. On this 15-song collection, recorded live in thestudio with all the players in a single room, the Carolina Chocolate Drops illustrate their own adaptability to grow andchange. Following the amicable departure of founding member Justin Robinson, band mates Rhiannon Giddens and DomFlemons recruited three exceptional new players for the recording and expanded their repertoire to incorporate more overtblues and jazz elements and straight-up folk balladry alongside brilliantly rendered string-band tunes. Robinson'sreplacement is Hubby Jenkins, a Brooklyn-bred guitarist, banjo player, and singer who had previously busked his wayaround the country. Joining the revamped trio in Miller's studio were beat-boxer Adam Matta, introduced to them by theNYC gypsy punk band Luminescent Orchestrii, with whom CCD released a live EP on Nonesuch last year, and NewOrleans-based cellist Leyla McCalla, who will accompany CCD on their 2012 live dates.

Title track "Leaving Eden," an elegiac piece recounting the falling fortunes of a North Carolina mill town, is sung withplainspoken eloquence by Giddens and underscored by McCalla's mournful cello. Giddens takes an overtly bluesy turn onEthel Waters' 1920's-era wry confession, "No Man's Mama," and she brings a hip hop-style, declamatory flair to herself-penned "Country Girl," egged on by Matta's beat-boxing. Though often striking out in new directions, CCD returns tofamiliar turf with tracks like "Riro's House," a traditional banjo and fiddle piece learned from their mentor, North Carolinianfiddle player Joe Thompson, and bolstered by a rousing fife-and-drum groove. They pay tribute to the venerable Piedmontguitarist and banjo player, Etta Baker, adapting words to one of Baker's vintage melodies on "West End Blues." AndFlemons creates a lively new arrangement of "Mahalla," a joyfully melodic piece by spoon-wielding South African slideguitarist, and YouTube phenomenon, Hannes Coetzee.

Carolina Chocolate Drops have played to a remarkably wide range of concert-goers in the last year, with appearances atthe Newport Folk Festival, the Grand Ole Opry, the Cambridge Folk Festival in London, and as part of the Dave MatthewsBand Caravan, among many other events. Having just completed U.K. dates, Carolina Chocolate Drops embark on arigorous schedule for 2012, starting with an East Coast tour of concert halls and colleges, to be followed by a slot thisspring at the New Orleans Jazz and Heritage Festival.

The Carolina Chocolate Drops are a young string band in the centuries-old Piedmont banjo and fiddle musical tradition.The band formed after founding members Dom Flemons, Rhiannon Giddens, and Justin Robinson met at a roots festival in2005, and discovered a shared interest in traditional African-American string band music of the Piedmont region. In 2011multi-instrumentalist Hubby Jenkins joined Flemons and Giddens in the group upon Robinson's departure. The membersshare singing duties and swap instruments throughout their sets. Cellist Leyla McCalla also joins the band on the record.

Description:

"Rooms Filled With Light was a phrase I found in an old notebook," says Fanfarlo's singer and songwriter Simon Balthazarof the title to the band's second album. "To me it summed something up, creation, not creation of the world, but what wedo as people. It seems like creating rooms and filling them with light is a very modern, fundamental human activity,creating little worlds. It resonates with the whole experience of making art or music."

The follow-up to Fanfarlo's 2009 debut album Reservoir was recorded by Ben H Allen (Deerhunter, Animal Collective)during a six week session at Bryn Derwen, a studio located in a remote former slate quarry in Wales

Hailing from the UK, Sweden and Belgium Fanfarlo began as the bedroom project of lead singer / songwriter SimonBalthazar. His literate pop songs bear more resemblance to the modern folk sounds of Sufjan Stevens, Beirut and TheArcade Fire than the fashion-driven London scene where the band resides. As his vision grew he fleshed out the lineupwith an amazingly versatile group of musicians who play a vast number of instruments to bring these lushly-arranged poptunes to life. Tapped and spiralling guitars, an insistently hammered piano chord, or an ominous stomp, the fervour withwhich they play is stirring and infectious.

If Fanfarlo live in a world of big ideas, with their debut, ‘Reservoir', taking its inspiration from the library, then this, theirsecond record, has shifted location to the laboratory. ‘Rooms Filled With Light' is chockfull of the language of science,medicine and analytical thought. Viruses, asteroid impacts and mass extinctions stalk the album. This being Fanfarlo,however, the big stuff is always held in dynamic tension with the players' hardwired compulsion to create nothing short ofuplifting and euphoric pop music.

This is the story of ‘Rooms Filled With Light' and its growth and development from the world they inhabited on ‘Reservoir'.It would be easy to say that the new record is a fundamental disconnect from their debut; the guitars are now electricinstead of acoustic and those are synths and samplers instead of mandolins and glockenspiels. Except it isn't true. ‘RoomsFilled With Light', in fact, is the true inheritor to its predecessor in that it takes all the themes, musical and lyrical, and vastlyexpands them with all the confidence of a band gaining control of their aims and abilities for the first time.

While the boxed set documents the important early years of the Brad Mehldau Trio, with Jorge Rossy on drums, Odebrings the story up to date, with a session cut last spring at Avatar Studio in Manhattan. Drummer Ballard, who joined thetrio in 2005, "has proved to be a brilliant replacement for the original percussionist," the New Yorker praised while coveringthe group's January residency at the Village Vanguard, where the trio had recorded a 2008 Nonesuch live disc. Odefurther ties Meldhau's personal history into those of his progenitors and his peers, with songs inspired by and dedicated tosuch fellow artists as the late saxophonist Michael Brecker ("M.B.") and guitarist Kurt Rosenwinkel ("Kurt'sVibe") as well astracks inspired by his son ("Days of Dilbert Delaney") and, most playfully, his favorite character on the seventies cartoonseries ("Aquaman"). Mehldau's musical personality forms a dichotomy. He is first and foremost an improviser, and greatly cherishes thesurprise and wonder that can occur from a spontaneous musical idea that is expressed directly, in real time. In his most inspired playing,the actual structure of his musical thought serves as an expressive device. As he plays, he listens to how ideas unwind,and the order in which they reveal themselves. Each tune has a strongly felt narrative arch, whether it expresses itself in abeginning, an end, or something left intentionally open-ended. The two sides of Mehldau's personality—the improviser andthe formalist—play off each other, and the effect is often something like controlled chaos.

Mehldau has performed around the world at a steady pace since the mid-1990s, with his trio and as a solo pianist. Hisperformances convey a wide range of expression. There is often an intellectual rigor to the continuous process ofabstraction that may take place on a given tune, and a certain density of information. That could be followed by a strippeddown, emotionally direct ballad. Mehldau favors juxtaposing extremes. He has attracted a sizeable following over theyears, one that has grown to expect a singular, intense experience in his performance.

The Doors, one of the most influential and controversial rock bands of the 1960s, were formed in Los Angeles in 1965 byUCLA film students Ray Manzarek, keyboards, and Jim Morrison, vocals; with drummer John Densmore and guitaristRobby Krieger. The group never added a bass player, and their sound was dominated by Manzarek's electric organ workand Morrison's deep, sonorous voice, with which he sang and intoned his highly poetic lyrics. The group signed to ElektraRecords in 1966 and released its first album, The Doors, featuring the hit "Light My Fire," in 1967. Like "Light My Fire," thedebut album was a massive hit, and endures as one of the most exciting, groundbreaking recordings of the psychedelicera. Blending blues, classical, Eastern music, and pop into sinister but beguiling melodies, the band sounded like no other.With his rich, chilling vocals and somber poetic visions, Morrison explored the depths of the darkest and most thrillingaspects of the psychedelic experience. Their first effort was so stellar, in fact, that the Doors were hard-pressed to matchit, and although their next few albums contained a wealth of first-rate material, the group also began running up against thelimitations of their recklessly disturbing visions. By their third album, they had exhausted their initial reservoir ofcompositions, and some of the tracks they hurriedly devised to meet public demand were clearly inferior to, and imitativeof, their best early work. On The Soft Parade, the group experimented with brass sections, with mixed results. Accused(without much merit) by much of the rock underground as pop sellouts, the group charged back hard with the final twoalbums they recorded with Morrison, on which they drew upon stone-cold blues for much of their inspiration, especially on1971's L.A. Woman. From the start, the Doors' focus was the charismatic Morrison, who proved increasingly unstable overthe group's brief career. In 1969, Morrison was arrested for indecent exposure during a concert in Miami, an incident thatnearly derailed the band. Nevertheless, the Doors managed to turn out a series of successful albums and singles through1971, when, upon the completion of L.A. Woman, Morrison decamped for Paris. He died there, apparently of a drugoverdose. The three surviving Doors tried to carry on without him, but ultimately disbanded. Yet the Doors' music andMorrison's legend continued to fascinate succeeding generations of rock fans: In the mid-'80s, Morrison was as big a star

as he'd been in the mid-'60s, and Elektra has sold numerous quantities of the Doors' original albums plus reissues andreleases of live material over the years, while publishers have flooded bookstores with Doors and Morrison biographies. In1991, director Oliver Stone made The Doors, a feature film about the group starring Val Kilmer as Morrison.
