SPOTLIGHT ON DESIGN!
AROUND THE WORLD
AND WHAT DESIGNERS CAN LEARN FROM IT
Ar$st: Banksy
PRESENTATION TITLE GOES HERE !It’s only in the last few decades that street art has started to be viewed as having artistic merit . The fact that these works are usually temporary
instalments makes this art form all the more impressive, with even the often-anonymous artist not knowing when their masterpiece might be covered up.!

The planning and technical skills that it takes to execute some of these works of art, is nothing short of astonishing. Once considered a destructive practice, graffiti art is now a respected form of artistry in its own right.!
!Both graphic design and graffiti are visual forms of communication that convey
a message to their audience. With this in mind, what can we, as designers, learn from some of the most impressive street art in the world? !!
The short answer? Plenty.!
PRESENTATION TITLE GOES HERE Starting in our own back yard, Melbourne makes the top of our inspiration list. With its laneways and major murals covered completely with colourful images, Melbourne is home to truly talented artists.!

Street art in Melbourne, and around the world, is particularly powerful because of its sense of
urgency –! !
!– the idea that someone could
come and restore the boring
old wall at any moment gives artists the energy to create
something exciting.!

Graffiti artwork can be made even more eye-catching with the use of bright colours and contrasting shadows to create depth and texture – these artworks are on another level. !
Just look at that shadow work. !!

Put as much energy into your designs as you can and they will be impossible to overlook. Use colour and contrast to really bring your work to life. !

Thanks to the fall of the Berlin Wall and the need to bring colour back into a very grey, communist East Germany, Berlin has a huge concentration of street art. !

Street artworks in Berlin tend to be incredibly provocative, each making a very powerful political or social statement. !

to the historical tension in the city. !

PRESENTATION TITLE GOES HERE Let your design / artwork speak for itself! Don’t be afraid to let your
work make a bold statement; your images should speak as loud as !(if not louder than) your words. !

While ‘Banksy’ (an artist who certainly isn’t afraid of controversy) has famously left his mark on the London scene, the cityscape also acts as a canvas for many other talented artists. !

Many of the artworks make clever use of the urban backdrop, incorporating the space into their design – often on a massive scale.!

PRESENTATION TITLE GOES HERE Use your canvas to its full potential, whatever it may be. Try out non-
traditional design forms and elements to create something completely new and different.!
!– Shake things up a bit.!

Sao Paulo’s streets are covered with graphic artworks. The majority of these include abstract and surreal portraits, with others that contain more politically-charged themes.!

The scale of artworks in Sau Paulo can be massive, with full building facades acting as canvases in projects. Some artworks even span whole neighbourhoods.!

Fill your canvas. You may not have a massive space to work with but you can still make your work stand out. By exaggerating the size of your elements (whether large or small) you can add drama to your
artwork. This exaggeration will also let your audience know which elements you want them to pay more attention to.!

The city of Montreal is so passionate about its street art, that it has created an annual festival called MURAL. During this festival, artists from around the world are invited to fill a two-kilometre stretch of a main city
boulevard. !

MURAL’s mission is to ‘democratize urban art’ and to remove some of the stigma that street art has had in the past. !

Throughout the event, visitors get the opportunity to watch the murals being painted in real time, while enjoying various musical events, art seminars and installations.!

Many of these works are completely surreal and fantastic, with bizarre themes and motifs dominating the landscape.!

As a designer, you have a huge amount of artistic license – go for the extraordinary. The only limits to what you can create as an artist are within your own imagination. !
Sometimes, rejecting the ordinary can lead to some incredibly
striking results. !

The city of Bristol is where graffiti artist Banksy calls home. As a result, his provocative artwork can be found here in abundance.!
Ar$st: Banksy

Many of the other larger murals in Bristol make great use of line work, in order to create a sense of movement. !

Our eyes are drawn from one area of the piece to the next, in a very noticeable
direction. !!
The anticipation of the paint dripping out of the tin is very real in this piece, found in
Bristol’s city centre.!

PRESENTATION TITLE GOES HERE Make your designs look like they could jump right off the page by
creating a sense of movement. Using straight or curved lines to direct your audience’s gaze can add a whole new dimension to your work.!

So to you, designers…!!Wherever in the world you may be, take a
moment to embrace your local street art. Remember, it doesn’t have to be a large mural to
showcase some original ideas and some real talent. !!
If you pay attention to the messages that are conveyed and how they are conveyed, you are guaranteed to learn a thing or two. Maybe you
could even use these learnings in your own artworks…!
