efficiency actions and energy performance for SFS

Group Fastening Technology Limited.

Streamlined Energy & Carbon Reporting

This report summarises the energy usage, associated emissions, energy efficiency actions and

energy performance for SFS Group Fastening Technology Limited, under the government policy

Streamlined Energy & Carbon Reporting (SECR), as implemented by the Companies (Directors’

Report) and Limited Liability Partnerships (Energy and Carbon Report) Regulations 2018.

It also summarises, in the appendix, the methodologies utilised for all calculations related to the

elements reported under Energy & Carbon.

SFS Group Fastening Technology Limited are a UK incorporated business. Under the new SECR

legislation we are mandated to include energy consumption, emissions, intensity metrics and all

energy efficiency improvements implemented in our most recent financial year.

SFS Group Fastening Technology Limited have compiled a large amount of consumption data for

our operations for the purpose of SECR – invoice data for 6 utility meters have been processed

for this data collation.

9.7% of electricity and gas consumption data used for SECR has been required to be estimated

to achieve 100% data coverage.

Year 1

SFS Group Fastening Technology Limited’s

Scope 1 direct emissions (combustion of

natural gas and transportation fuels) for this

first year of reporting are 380.51 tCO2e,

resulting from the direct combustion of

1,883,456 kWh of fuel.

Scope 2 indirect emissions (purchased

electricity) for this first year of reporting are

520.17 tCO2e, resulting from the

consumption of 2,231,166 kWh of electricity

purchased and consumed in day to day

business operations.

SFS Group Fastening Technology Limited’s

operations have an intensity metric of

5.43tCO2e per FTE for this reporting year.

Organisational Structure and Qualification

SFS Group Fastening Technology Limited

SFS Group Fastening Technology Limited is the parent company and form the Construction and

Riveting division of the ultimate parent company, SFS Group. The sites within this parent

company are: - Welwyn Site (warehouse and distribution), Leeds Site (warehouse, assembly and

distribution) and Keighley Site (manufacturing and distribution).

SFS Group Fastening Technology Limited is required to comply with SECR, as we exceed the

qualification thresholds of two of the three criteria (employee numbers, turnover, or balance sheet

total).

Data Quality and Completeness

Invoices have been entered into a fully managed

energy database up to 31st December 2020.

Data Completeness

All SFS Group Fastening Technology Limited’s electricity and gas invoices have been entered

into a fully managed energy database up to 31st December 2020, and data quality checks have

been carried out for data completeness and accuracy. All transport information has also been

entered into the energy database up to 31st December 2020.

There were a number of instances, equating to 9.7% of the electricity and gas reported

consumption, where it was necessary to calculate some estimated consumption to achieve 100%

data coverage. Methodology of these estimation techniques is detailed in the appendix.

energy supplies reportable by SFS Group Fastening

Technology Limited

Consumption (kWh) and Greenhouse Gas emissions (tCO2e) Totals

The following figures make up the baseline reporting for SFS Group Fastening Technology

Limited, as 2020 is the first year that SFS Group Fastening Technology Limited are required to

report this information.

Scope 1 consumption and emissions relate to direct combustion of natural gas, and fuels utilised

for transportation operations, such as company vehicle fleets. Scope 3 emissions related to grey

fleet are also reportable under SECR for SFS Group Fastening Technology Limited.

Scope 2 consumption and emissions relate to indirect emissions relating to the consumption of

purchased electricity in day to day business operations.

Energy Efficiency Improvements

SFS Group Fastening Technology Limited are

committed to year on year improvements in their

operational energy efficiency.

Energy Efficiency Improvements

SFS Group Fastening Technology Limited are committed to year on year improvements in their

operational energy efficiency. As such, a register of energy efficiency measures available to SFS

Group Fastening Technology Limited has been compiled, with a view to implementing these

measures in the next 5 years.

Measures ongoing and undertaken prior and through 2020:

LED replacements

We have completed an LED replacement programme across all buildings at the Leeds site. The

main goal was to reduce carbon emissions but also provide a brighter and more comfortable

workspace for our employees. This project has resulted in a saving of 89 tCO2e and 27% energy

costs per annum. At the Keighley site all bulkhead emergency exit and site entrance / exit gate

fittings have been changed to LED, as a matter of course all faulty units are replaced with LED

fittings.

Heating system replacement

At both the Leeds and Welwyn sites we have changed our heating system from gas fired boilers

to a direct fired heating system supported by destratification fans. This project has resulted in a

reduction of 353 tCO2e and close to 2 million kWh per annum.

Variable Speed Drives

The Leeds site has changed one of the air compressors to a VSD unit to improve efficiency and

optimise the load requirement on the compressor motor. The Keighley site has purchased VSD

air compressors and utilises the fixed speed compressor for emergency use only.

Zero to Landfill

The Leeds site has a contract with ACM Environmental for zero waste to landfill which has been

in place for 18 months. This means that 100% of our waste is now either recycled equating to

59.8 tonnes per annum or used for energy recovery equating to 1.8 tonnes.

Measures prioritised for implementation in 2021:

‘Go Green’ Initiative

Our ‘Go Green’ initiative is to commence early 2021. The ‘Go-Green’ initiative is a shared effort

amongst all UK employees to firstly understand what our overall impact on the environment is

Page 9: Streamlined Energy & Carbon Reporting (SECR)

SFS Group Fastening Technology Limited Streamlined Energy & Carbon Reporting 9

and then to have a focused approach through the development of our Green Culture, to

continuously reduce our impact as a business.

Solar PV

Our plan is to evaluate the business case for rooftop solar PV across all our UK sites.

Transport

Our plan commencing 2021 is to change our current policy on company vehicles, by encouraging

drivers to take up plug-in hybrid options with the purchase of Electric Vehicles to be introduced in

2023.

Compressed air leaks

At our Leeds and Keighley sites we will tackle compressed air leaks as part of our in house

planned preventative maintenance regime to sustain baseline and hold pressure and volume.

LED Lighting

At our Keighley site LED lighting is to be fitted in the main office, Heading department and

Warehouse. Within the Warehouse the skylights will be cleaned to allow more natural light into

this area.

Zero to Landfill

The Welwyn site is to follow Leeds in implementing the zero waste to landfill contract with ACM.

Reduction of plastic

To reduce plastic in our packaging we are focussing on removing bubble wrap and replacing with

recycled paper or cardboard. We are also exploring paper based tape to seal boxes.

Appendix

Reporting Methodology

Scope 1 and 2 consumption and CO2e emission data has been calculated in line with the 2019 UK

Government environmental reporting guidance. The following Emission Factor Databases consistent with

the 2019 UK Government environmental reporting guidance have been used, utilising the current

published kWh gross calorific value (CV) and kgCO2e emissions factors relevant for reporting year

01/01/2020 – 31/12/2020:

Database 2020, Version 1.0.

Estimations undertaken to cover missing billing periods for properties directly invoiced to SFS Group

Fastening Technology Limited were calculated on a kWh/day pro-rata basis at meter level. These

estimations equated to 9.7% of reported electricity and gas consumption.

These full year estimations were applied to 1 electricity supply, and 1 gas supply for SFS Group Fastening

Technology Limited.

Intensity metrics have been calculated utilising the 2020 reportable figures for the following metrics, and tCO2e for both individual sources and total emissions were then divided by this figure to determine the tCO2e per metric:

• Full time equivalents (FTE) 166
