Troubleshooting Getting Started: ► Check whether the drive is not ready for use or is not recognized. ► Check that you are using the latest version of the Primergy server firmware and host controller

firmware (SCSI, SAS or USB). Current drivers, firmware and fools you can get under www.fujitsu-siemens.com/support.

► Check that you are using the correct approved drivers of the operating system and the backup application. Current drivers, firmware and fools you can get under www.fujitsu-siemens.com/support.

► Check that you are using the correct service packs, patches or updates for the operating system and the backup application. For additional information, refer to the support pages of the operating system or backup application suppliers.

Drive is not ready for use or is not recognized ► Check whether the LED indicators of the drive are lighting during/after switching on the server.

If not, check that the cable for the power supply of the drive is correctly connected. ► Check whether the LED indicators of the drive are indicating a failure status. First eliminate this

failure status. ► If possible, carry out a self-test of the drive. ► For Microsoft operating systems: check whether a yellow exclamation mark or a red cross is

shown in the Device Manager next to a HOST controller or a drive. If so, uninstall and reinstall the drivers.

► Check whether the data line (SCSI, SAS or USB) is properly connected to the HOST controller and drive, and that none of the pins in the connector are bent.

► For SCSI: check whether the data line is connected on the LVD port of the Host controller. ► For SCSI: Depending on the configuration, an additional SCSI terminator may have to be

connected to the end of the data cable. ► For SCSI: check whether the setting of the SCSI ID is correct. The SCSI ID of the drive must

not be egal with the SCSI ID of the SCSI controller or other SCSI devices. ► Remove the tape from the drive. ► Restart your PRIMERGY server and ensure that the drive will be recognised. The drive should now be ready for operation. If not, please contact the FSC hotline.

Device does not accept a medium ► Check whether the drive is not ready for use or is not recognized. ► Check whether the drive must be cleaned. To determine whether this is the case, check the

“Use Cleaning Tape” light. ► Use a new medium and check whether it is accepted. The drive should accept the medium now. If not, please contact the FSC hotline.

Device does not eject a medium ► Check whether the drive is executing a “Format Recovery”. Depending on the drive type, this

may take several hours, during which time the status indicator blinks constantly. The medium can only be removed after this process is completed.

The drive should eject the medium now. If not, please contact the FSC hotline.

The medium cannot be written ► Check whether the drive is not ready for use or is not recognized. ► Check whether the write protection of the medium is activated. ► Check whether the drive must be cleaned. To determine whether this is the case, check the

“Use Cleaning Tape” light. ► Use a new medium and check if it is accepted and if a write process is possible. The drive should write the medium now. If not, please contact the FSC hotline.

Problems with performance and with read/write operations. ► For SCSI: Check that the drive is connected to the correct SCSI port of the host controller

(onboard or PCI card). The drive should only be connected to the LVD port with the correct speed (Ultra2, Ultra160 or Ultra 320)!

► For USB: Check that the drive is connected to the correct USB port of the host controller (onboard or PCI network card). The drive should only be connected to the USB 2.0 port.

► For USB: Check whether the USB port of the host controller (onboard or PCI network card) to which the drive is connected is also connected to USB 1.1 devices. The drive must only be connected to the same bus as USB 2.0 devices.

► Check whether the drive must be cleaned. To determine whether this is the case, check the “Use Cleaning Tape” light.

► Check that the operating system has been configured to ensure that it performs at its maximum potential. For example, check the hardware compression, registry settings for SCSI and SAS block sizes (for SCSI Controller Adaptec 29160 and Fujitsu Siemens D1305, for example).

► Check whether the data for the backup is defragmented and whether the data source (for example, the hard disk) can supply the data at a sufficient speed (performance of the data source, organisation/structure of the data).

► Check whether data can be compressed. If the data can be compressed, enable hardware compression on the drive. If the data cannot be compressed, disable hardware compression on the drive. Use the backup application to do so.

The drive should now perform as expected during read/write operations and no problems should occur If not, please contact the FSC hotline.

Device not detected by backup software ► Check whether the drive is not ready for use or is not recognized. ► Check that you are using the newest version of the backup software

For CA ARCserve 2000/BrightStore 9: ► Exit the Removable Storage Manager (RSM) service.

For NTBACKUP: ► Check that the Removable Storage Manager (RSM) was started and is running. NTBACKUP

does now work properly if this service is not running.
