A SUMMARV ACCOUNT OF CARBONIFEROUS ANO LOWERPERMIAN SUCCESSIONSIN TIff CANTABRIAN MOUNTAINS(SOUTHEASTERN PART ITS PARTICULAR)

In Uds region a highly condensed suceession of stra[a eentaining limestones,cher[s atíd black shales el Famennian, Teurnaisian ant> Viséan ages is ibllewcdby shallow water liniesbenes of dic Nan>urian ant> Iower Westpha¡ian, iiiconjunetien with lower Wes[phalian siliciclasties. This successien, ¡ess than2,000 m thick ant> containing a number el stratigraphic breaks due te repeateduplifí of local importance, was [ectenicallv deformed in late Langsettian times.This deformatien, which is sharply delimiled in time, produced importan!shoríening as a resulí el Iarge-scale lhrusiing. This includes nappe siruclures.

Se’vcral thousand metres of predominantly marine strata were laid downsubsequerttly iii a tetaLly unconformable succession of latest 1.angsettian,Duckmantian, Belsovian ant> early Wcstpbalian D ages. 2. The MalpásFormatienof MEY u aL (1968) ant> NAGTEGAAL (1969),as modified by GISBERT (198]) ant> BESLY & COLLINSON (1991), isapparenilyof late Stepbaoian Ci age. It comparesin age ant> stratigraphicpesitienwitb [be SanTirso bedsin central Asturias,Cantabrian Mountains.The post-AsturianS[epbanian (upperl3arruelian te lowerS[ephanian C), which is widelydeveloped in [he Ciantabrian Mountains, is apparently absení in il>e Pyrcnees.

4. The substantial gaps in ibe bigher Carbonifereus succession of the south-central Pyrenees possibly cemprise almosí the entire Wcstphalian (upperWes[phalian D excepted) and mes[ of [he Siephanian (upper Stephanian Ciexcepted) (see Fig. 2).
