Strathmore is thrilled to introduce a new way to support the arts in your community. Strathmore is an independent non-government 501(c)(3) non-profit organization which presents over 225 artistic and educational events every single year—two-thirds of these events are free.

In addition to its many free events, Strathmore presents an array of music, dance, opera and the-ater performances at ticket prices designed to wel-come the broadest possible audience. Because it is part of Strathmore’s mission to keep ticket prices low, revenue from ticket sales alone cannot cover the cost of presenting these performances.

Strathmore depends on the support of individuals like you to play a starring role in making the arts available to all.

Your tax-deductible Strathmore Stars contribution:• Lights up the stages in the music Center,

mansion, Backyard theater and Free Summer outdoor Concerts, keeping ticket prices afford-able for our community

• Brings thousands of school children to curricu-lum-based concerts at Strathmore

• Provides free arts experiences and scholarships to Strathmore programs for low-income and underserved members of our community

• Nurtures developing artists through Artist in residence programs, performance and teach-ing opportunities

• makes something free to do or see available at Strathmore nearly every day of every year

• Allows Strathmore to continue to offer no ticket fees and free parking for ticketed events

STrAvInSKY FESTIvALone of the 20th century’s most influential compos-ers, Igor Stravinsky was adept at casting himself as a man of the world and his compositions as ob-jective and closed to interpretation. In recent de-cades this self-image has been powerfully refuted with the discovery of russian folk sources woven into his work and his own return to his russian identity late in life.

Strathmore presents a weekend of concerts, edu-cation programs and a photography exhibition dedicated to re-contextualizing Stravinsky as an essentially russian composer. Designed both for Stravinsky appreciators and those just discovering his music and influence, this city-wide festival co-produced with the Post-Classical ensemble.

Stravinsky’s russian AccentAPrIL 8, 2011, 8PMAlexander Toradze, George vatchnadze, and Genadi Zagor, pianistsPost-Classical EnsembleAngel Gil-Ordóñez conductorrediscover music that changed everything, shock-ing audiences in the early 20th century and con-tinuing to shape the course of the art through the 1960s. In this brilliant program you will hear Stravinsky’s searing les noces, written for chorus, pianos and percussion, and the russian folk wed-ding songs that inspired the piece; his explosive Concerto for Piano and Winds; and Symphonies for Wind Instruments, which inaugurated the neo-classical era. *Listen & Learn! enjoy a free post-concert discus-sion with the artists.

Interpreting StravinskyAPrIL 10, 2011, 12PM–3:45PM• Explore the composer’s life and times in The

Stravinsky odyssey, an exhibition of photographs by Katya Chilingiri documenting Stravinsky’s od-yssey from russia to Switzerland to France to California, along with Chilingiri’s filmed inter-views with his descendants. Chilingiri will offer a guided tour, followed by discussion.

• Experience a rare event as pianolist Rex Lawson performs the American premiere of Stravinsky’s les noces in its final version for mechanical piano.

• The adventure continues with an exploration of Stravinsky’s life and influences, and challenges Stravinsky’s strictures against interpretation with a fascinating session that includes historic recordings, film, discussions and music in live performance.

• Box lunches will be available for purchase.

Stravinsky and the PianoAPrIL 10, 2011, 4PMAlexander Toradze, George vatchnadze, and Genadi Zagor, pianistsJoseph Horowitz, hostthree great russian pianists reveal the soul of Stravinsky’s music in this chronological survey of the composer’s works for piano, including his arrange-ment for duo pianos of The rite of Spring, the Washington-area premiere of Scherzo from Sonata in F sharp minor, Tango, Piano Sonata, Concerto for two Solo Pianos and more, including an improvisa-tion that references each of the works. host Joseph horowitz is your guide, offering informed and witty commentary.*Listen & Learn! enjoy a free post-concert discus-sion with the artists.

A CELEBrATIOn OF THE GuITArthroughout the 2010–2011 season, look forward to our Celebration of the Guitar—a series of concerts and events tracing the history of the guitar and its influence as one of the primary instruments shap-ing contemporary musical movements. this year-long program showcases the guitar along with its cousins, the lute, Chinese pipa, and mandolin. the season begins with a performance featuring the 17th century lute and closes with a world premiere Strathmore commissioned electric guitar compo-sition by Aaron Grad. Along the way concerts ex-plore the developing construction and sound of the guitar as it migrates and transforms into American folk, jazz and blues, Brazilian Jazz, rock and roll and more. NPr reporter and noted guitar expert tom Cole provides insightful program notes to both deepen your understanding of the guitar and en-rich the concert experience.
