Strategic Planning – Data and Maps
Milwaukee County Divided up into Block Groups.
Definition : a block group denotes a cluster of blocks in which 800 to 1000 people reside. Block groups
are a subset of census tracts.
Each Block group was measured for:1) Geographic Identifier
2) Number of Items Checked Out 3) Number of patrons
Data collection started in late November, and includes two
months data.
Service Area Map Methodology
2008 Service Map• The service areas were
determined by MPL staff committee;
• Based on geographic features/barriers;
• Transportation options; and• Anecdotal observation.
Emerging 2013 Service Map• All of the city's territory and
population is included.• Service areas are formed by block
groups.• Service areas are contiguous.• Block group selection considers
which libraries patrons used to check out items.
• Block group selection also considers natural and man-made features; and paths of travel (street orientation.)

Notes on Emerging Service Map
1. West Allis, Wauwatosa and Brown Deer draw nearby city residents in large numbers to their locations.
2. The southern suburbs don’t draw heavily (Greenfield, Greendale, Cudahy etc.)
3. Central Library has a stronger geographic reach to the north than to the south.
4. Most Block Groups showed check outs from several different libraries.
This is just the beginning!
