Exemplar - School LensImplementing social-emotional learning (SEL) in a school:

● Why?○ Increases in academic performance, student engagement, relationship building and sense of belonging○ Decrease in behavior difficulties (suspensions and behavior referrals)

● How?○ School and division leadership partner with the SEL specialist to determine a school’s readiness level by

analyzing structures and supports that are in place allowing for the expansion of programs, learning experiences, and instructional approaches that develop the whole child. This process includes the following:

■ Scaffold the implementation looking for foundation pieces to be in place of implementing a schoolwide PBIS framework that will support SEL;

■ Scaffold the implementation looking for a foundation of trauma-sensitive practices to be in place to enhance SEL; and,

■ Connect/align SEL strategies with restorative practice strategies implemented at the secondary level.○ SEL implementation effectiveness is sustained through an integrated approach -- time in master schedule,

integrate project-based learning to give embedded practice of SEL skills to students on real projects that positively impact their community, etc.
