Introduction The Republic of India maintains a relation with the European Union

which is separate from the bilateral relation with sovereign member States of the European Union.

In Asia, India have highest positive public perception of Europe.

India has strategic partnerships with France, the United Kingdom and Germany.

India-EU-28 cooperation programmed following areas in the domains of education, people to people contacts, joint research in science & technologies, environment protection & climate change, and aid to victims of disasters.

Significance• The need for this paper is to shows the relation between

European union and India in context of various heads such as strategic partnership, trade and economic cooperation, Environment protection, Renewable energy, clean technology, aid to victim of disaster, People to people contacts, etc., and how India is benefitted from its relation with EU.

Objective of the study

Eu-India relations: chronology

YEAR EVENTS

1962 India establishes diplomatic relations with the European Economic Community (EU).

1970 European Union (EU) launches a major cooperation programme in the dairy sector with support to Operation Flood.

1971 EU provides trade support through the Generalised System of Preferences (GSP).

1981 India and the EU sign a Commercial and Economic Cooperation Agreement in November.

1989 Scientific cooperation between Indian and the EU is set up in fundamental as well as applied research (STD).

1992 European and Indian industry establish a Joint Business Forum to promote trade and investment.

1993 The first sector cooperation program is launched in primary education with EU support of €150 mn. to the Indian Government’s District Primary Education Program (DPEP).

YEAR EVENTS

2000 The first EU-India summit is held in Lisbon.€200 mn. support to India’s Sarva Shiksha Abhiyan

2004 A Strategic Partnership is launched.

2008 A Joint Declaration on Education is signed to facilitate cooperation in higher education. European Business and Technology Centre (EBTC) opens in New Delhi.

2011 The European Investment Bank provides a framework loan of €200 mn. to finance projects in the renewable energy sector.The EU and India sign a Joint Declaration on Culture.

2012 Adopted at the EU-India Summit, a Joint Declaration on Energy foresees cooperation on smart grids, clean coal technologies, nuclear safety and security, Biofuels and renewable energy. The EU-India Skills Development Project is launched for vocational education and training.

2016 EU-India Agenda for Action-2020 as a common roadmap to jointly guide and strengthen the India-EU Strategic Partnership in the next five years. The agenda further builds upon the shared objectives and outcomes of the Joint Action Plans of 2005 and 2008.

Mr. Donald Tusk, President of the European Council, Mr. Jean-Claude Juncker, President of the European Commission, and Mr. Narendra Modi, Prime Minister of the Republic of India met in Brussels on 30th March, 2016 for the 13th European Union - India Summit.

Main points of EU & India Summit 2016

Strengthen foreign policy cooperation, in areas of mutual interest.

Strengthen cooperation in the area of pharmaceuticals.

Having regard to, the 'Clean India', ‘Clean Ganga’ and 'Make in India' initiatives, through the Joint Working Group on Environment

Work towards the next generation of global communication networks (5G).

Identify opportunities for strengthened cooperation and coordination in international fora to support the implementation of the 2030 Agenda.

Trade in Goods

…..•The EU is India’s most important trade and investment

partner, with a total two-way trade close to €100 bn. in goods and services in 2012.

..... •India, is the EU’s ninth-largest trading partner, roughly on a par with Brazil and South Korea.

….. •Two-way trade in goods has almost tripled since 2000 (from €27 bn. in 2000 to €76 bn. in 2012).

InvestmentAnnual EU investment in India more than tripled between 2003 and 2010, going from €759 mn. In 2003 to €3 bn. in 2010.

It went up further to €12 bn. in 2011. Indian outward investment to the EU in 2011 reached €1.9 bn.

The EU and India launched negotiations for a Free Trade Agreement (FTA) in 2007.

Economic Co-operation

EU has supported the creation of the European Business and Technology Centre (EBTC) with branches in Delhi, Kolkata,

Mumbai and Bangalore.

EBTC is created to promote business and research cooperation in the key sectors of energy, environment,

biotechnology and transport.

The EBTC increases business and scientific and technical cooperation partnerships between European and Indian companies and enhances India’s access to European technology.

ECHO: aid to victim of disasters

The Humanitarian Aid and Civil Protection Department of the European Commission started its India operations by responding to the emergency needs of people affected by floods and cyclones in Orissa, Andhra Pradesh, West Bengal and Assam.

With large parts of India highly prone to events such as floods and droughts, ECHO funds relief efforts linked to these recurring natural disasters, an example being the Assam monsoon floods of 2012, for which €2 mn. was provided.

ECHO has also been supporting the victims of protracted humanitarian crises India, addressing the needs of over 100,000 Sri Lankan Tamil refugees in Tamil Nadu, as well as those of other victims of conflicts.

People to people contacts

Under this between 2004 to 2012 more than 2500 Indian students have been awarded scholarships for studies in Europe.

People to People Contacts with Masters courses offered jointly by two or more universities, allow Indian students to study in more than one EU Member State.

Many Europeans are also completing parts of their education or are pursuing entire degrees in India.

Brexit• Brexit is the abbreviation of British exit, held on June 23rd 2016, referendum

by British voters to exit the European union. The referendum soiled global market, including currencies, causing the British pound fall to its lowest level in decades.

• Impact of brexit on India “Brexit is bad for Britain but potentially good for India.”-NDTV.com Reasons: • Reduce in trade• Sustained drop in GDP.

The net effect of brexit turned out to be positive for, India. As India got chance to find new market in great Britain, Eu & rest of EU countries.

Problem faced by India in relationship with European

union• The main problem which India face in relation with

European union is that European union works on the concept of FTA i.e. Free trade concept and wants India to work on it but India is not that much developed to adopt FTA concept as FTA will lead to rise in competition between domestic product and Foreign product in India. And by this Domestic companies will be demotivated because a consumer use to prefer better quality product which is been sold by foreign companies.

Future perspective

Focus on renewable energy and growth of smart cities i.e. planned urban development with technology.

Conclusion At last I would like to conclude my presentation by saying

tha India is highly benefitted by its relation with European union, since last 50 years. We can see that various project have been implemented in India with the help of European union. As well EU provide various grant regarding development of Indian Economy.

And by future perspective we can conclude that in future India will be definitely benefitted by EU.
