WelcomeWe are delighted that you can join us to celebrate thegraduation of the 2017 Strategic Command Course.

Today marks the end of a course during which our students have tested their operational and strategic command skills. They have completed a module, delivered by Cass Business School, which included topics such as leading transformational change, innovation, corporate governance and developing a commercial and mutual mind-set.

They covered a wide range of areas designed to equip them with the skills, knowledge and self-awareness required to lead large organisations. We have explored subjects such as ethical leadership, valuing difference, engagement and wellbeing, evidence-based policing and leading a culture of enquiry, candour and challenge. We have had the opportunity to hear from police colleagues from English and Welsh forces, the Police Service of Northern Ireland and Police Scotland. We have also gained insights into the leadership challenges of partner organisations.

Our students had the privilege of hearing from a large, diverse group of eminent speakers and experts. They have opened themselves to many opportunities to learn and develop

in readiness to work at an executive level in their chosen organisations. The friendships that have been formed will continue beyond the course as our graduates return to their organisations or join new ones.

Completing the course is only the beginning of their continuing professional development. The police service needs leaders who are able to understand and respond to specific future challenges. We also need our leaders to demonstrate by personal example their commitment to reflection, continuing development and openness to challenge. In this way, they can remain adaptive to new challenges, actively responsive to communities and inspire confidence in those they lead.

Those graduating from the Strategic Command Course today can be very proud of their contribution and success on the course. We wish you continued success in your future.

Our purpose is to provide those working in policing with the skills and knowledge necessary to prevent crime, protect the public and secure public trust.
