English and maths in logistics

The project aimed to engage with the logistics sector within Lincolnshire to introduce new employers,in particular SMEs, to traineeships.

We worked with tutors, employers and other deliverers within the logistics sector to develop and trial vocationally relevant English and maths resources to support providers in the delivery of high quality traineeships.

Literacy resource

Aim of this resource is to give learners the opportunity to increase further learning and for tutors to use this material alongside other Core Curriculum Framework.

How can the resource be used:• It can be incorporated as part of a literacy programme already

started• It can be used as a starting point to introduce learners to the

world of logistics The main objective is to provide the learner with an insight into the literacy curriculum and introduce the sections speaking and listening, and reading and writing.

Literacy resource

The logistics literacy resource will enable learners to practise various subject areas within the three main areas and help them progress to a higher level.

The tasks compiled in this resource can be used as an individual programme to assist learning or used for differentiated learning with small groups of learners who need extra support in particular areas.

The resource is presented as 30 sessions.

Each session details the aims and objectives and includes a number of tasks for learners to complete.

The answers to these tasks are shown towards the end of the resource.

Numeracy resource

Aim of this resource is to give learners the opportunity to increase further learning and for staff to use this material alongside other Core Curriculum Framework.

How can the resource be used:• It can be incorporated as part of a numeracy programme

already started • It can be used as a starting point to introduce learners to

the world of logistics• It could be used as a stand-alone package for Level 1

Numeracy.

The main objective is to provide the student with an insight into the Numeracy Core Curriculum and introduce the sections: Number, Measures, Shapes and Space and Handling Data.

Benefits

• Increased staff confidence in delivery within the logistics sector

• Demonstrates the potential for adaptation for other sectors

We took a number of approaches to reviewing the resources. I have piloted sections with learners, shared them with logistics employers and our English team have evaluated the links to learning aims. The feedback is all positive. The activities meet the objectives and, most importantly, fit the bill of logistics relevance perfectly. I have nothing negative to say, you have done a very good job! – Stephenson College.

I work with a lot of logistic based organisations and trying to encourage organisations to give long term unemployed an opportunity can be a challenge, we are looking forward to being able to offer Traineeships to logistic based departments with candidates that have and are working towards industry focused core skills - M Brown, Jobcentre Plus

By involving employers and developing industry led, relevant scenarios we hope that the learner is able to more easily grasp the underlying mathematical concept and see the relevance of its application in the workplace - D Plummer, Grantham College
