TERRIFIC KIDS
At the end of last term the winners of the Term 3 Kiwanis Terrific Kids
Award were announced.
A Terrific Kid needs to be:
THOUGHTFUL ENTHUSIASTIC RESPECTFUL
RESPONSIBLE INFLUENTIAL FRIENDLY
IMPECCABLE CARING
These qualities align really closely with the characteristics and attitudes of
the IB Learner Profile. The characteristics we expect IB students to display
are those of a person who is an inquirer, knowledgeable, courageous, a
thinker, a communicator, open minded, balanced, principled, reflective and
caring.
The attitudes supporting these characteristics are appreciation,
commitment, confidence, cooperation, curiosity, creativity, empathy,
enthusiasm, independence, integrity, respect and tolerance.
Congratulations to Christian Spera, Sebastian Cole and Anika Younus, they
are outstanding ambassadors for our school and they approach all aspects
of school life in a balanced, considerate and enthusiastic manner.

SPEECH AND DRAMA
It was one of those memorable days, almost a festival
atmosphere, when 100 children shared their plays with over
400 parents and friends last Saturday at Drama Day. Various
Speech and Drama groups across Adelaide performed 12
plays and we were even fortunate enough to hear Kelly Bickle
(Stradbroke’s Speech
and Drama teacher)
present a humorous
monologue. We were
fortunate too with the
weather and were
able to enjoy Pedro’s
delicious homemade
icecream in the 2
intervals. Speech and
Drama students from Stradbroke performed well in their 2
plays - ‘The Blind Spot’ and ‘Fresh Air and Sunshine’ and
included Indurani Gupta, Funke Odusanya, Dewmini
Tennakoon, Aaliyah King, Kemi Odusanya, Ali Castello,
Summer Nordmeyer, Ellie Fitzgerald, Ayla Gamtcheff, Lauren
Daly and Charlie Sproule, under the direction of their
teacher, Kelly Bickle.
2018 enrolments are now available on the website
www.speechanddramasa.com.au or the front office.

INSTRUMENTAL MUSIC 2018
Beginner students
Stradbroke School is fortunate to be
able to offer specialist instrumental
music lessons for year 3-7 students.
These 30 minute lessons are
conducted by DECD Instrumental
Music teachers during normal lesson
time. We offer violin, viola and cello
for years 3-7 and classical guitar for
years 5-7 students. We are now
accepting expressions of interest for beginners in 2018. If
your child would like to learn an instrument and will be in
year 3-7 in 2018, please collect a form from Kathy in the Front
Office and return it by Friday 3rd
November. An
audition/interview process (no previous experience
necessary) will be held in early November and available
vacancies allocated. Students who have private lessons for an
instrument are not illegible for IMS lessons for the same
instrument but can be considered for the string ensemble.
Continuing students
By now you would have received an Instrumental Music
Continuing Student form for 2018 sent home at the end of
term 3. If your child would like to continue learning an
instrument in 2018 a form needs to be returned. If you have
not received a form, copies are available from Kathy in the
Front Office.
PLAYGROUP
Playgroup is a fantastic environment for parents and their
young children to learn and have fun together with other
parents and children.
Come and join in on Friday mornings in the Leabrook Activity
Room from 9am-10.30am.
Bring a piece of fruit to share. Everyone is welcome.

WATER AID FUNDRAISER
WaterAid Fundraiser - EK Body Care Scrubs
We would like to thank everyone that purchased one of our
homemade body scrubs during last term's fundraiser. Thanks
to generous donations from Foodland Rostrevor, Coles
Newton, Coles Firle and Officeworks Trinity Gardens, we were
able to donate all of the $335.00 we raised to WaterAid. All
jars purchased had a unique number on the top which gave
you an entry into our draw to win a $25.00 Coles
voucher. Using the random number generator on
Random.org we were able to choose a winning jar. The
winner of the $25.00 Coles voucher is jar 50 (Nadina Lenzi-
Bruno). Thank you for supporting us and hope you are
enjoying your body scrubs.

RESOURCE CENTRE
We have had our first official week of using the new library
management system, Access It. A number of classes explored
the OPAC, learning how to search for, locate and reserve
books using the new software. Thanks to all staff and
students for their patience during this time of change and a
special thanks to Shaun for his assistance with IT.
Thank you to families for returning books that were borrowed
for the holiday break. All books borrowed last term are now
due back and will be marked overdue on the computer
system (as loans are for two weeks only). If you need a title
extended, please bring the book into the Resource Centre so
we can re-scan it for you.

POWER FAILURES
In the case of a school wide power failure we lose access to
our phone and computer systems. In this situation the only
mechanism we have for communicating to school families is
through the Skoolbag app as we are able to access this
through an iPad and post messages for school families. If you
have not yet downloaded the Skoolbag app to your phone or
tablet we encourage you to do this so that you have access to
the latest information sent from the school.
EARLY MORNING ARRIVAL
There are significant constraints on the ability and capacity
of schools to provide supervision for students outside of
school hours. This constraint exists for DECD schools state-
wide, and is not limited to Stradbroke School.
We take our duty of care to students very seriously, and are
required to take reasonable steps to prevent the foreseeable
harm that may arise for students who are not supervised by
their parents prior to 8:30am.
Yard duty is available for students 20 minutes prior to
lessons beginning. Our school day begins at 8.50am
therefore before school yard duty begins at 8.30am. In
addition to this our before school care program is available
through OSHC for families who need to drop their children at
school prior to 8.30am. Our OSHC staff can assist parents
with bookings, and can facilitate access to child care benefits
and rebates for eligible families.
Students who are unsupervised and on the school grounds
before 8.30am will be taken to Kids’ Zone and families will
be sent an invoice.

Placement of Children in Classes for 2018
Planning for next year’s classes will begin soon. In making recommendations about class composition, teachers consider factors such as:
learning needs
gender balance
year level balance
social and emotional maturity
children with special needs and talents
social dynamics (which children to keep together and which to keep apart)
friendship groups
the number of children per class. Parent Information Parents are invited to write a short letter to the Principal if you have specific information about the needs of your child. Please include your child’s name, current year level and each student’s requirements on a separate page (not one family letter). Please do not make requests for a specific teacher. Due to enrolment numbers it is highly likely we will have composite classes, please do not make requests for your child to be or not be in a composite class. Please be aware that not all requests can be met, in past years some letters have included 5-6 specific requests for one child and it is very unlikely that these can all be accommodated. If you do have more than one request please write them in priority order so that we know which aspects of your request are most important to you.
Please place your letter in an envelope addressed to Anne Lamont.
Parent letters are due by 4pm on Wednesday 1st November.
Parent information will be considered along with factors considered by our teachers and those listed above.
Only information based on educational criteria will be considered.
A copy of your letter will be made available to the class teachers who make the placements. Classroom teachers use a range of processes to ask children to nominate friends with whom they wish to be placed. As it’s extremely difficult for us to deal with contradictory information from students and parents, it’s preferable that parents don’t write about friendship requests to us, unless there are serious issues. At this stage class structures are not definite and the final allocation of teachers to classes, which will take place late in the term, is affected by the appointment of teachers. Who makes the final decision? Staff will do their best to meet your child's needs. You can be assured that we spend a great deal of time and effort in accommodating and allocating children to classes. It is the responsibility of the Principal to make the final decision on classes and placement of students. At times it may not be in the child's best interests to be placed according to parent requests and we will discuss this with you wherever possible. When will children and parents know about class placements? If possible, class placement information will be sent home with students in the last week of term. After that date children's class placements will not be changed unless there are extenuating circumstances. If you wish to take advantage of the opportunity to provide information about your child, please ensure that all requests are forwarded to the Principal no later than 4pm on Wednesday 1st November 2017. Kind regards, Anne Lamont Principal
