HEALTH AS A SPECIALIST SUBJECT AT STRADBROKE

Once again Health is being taught by specialist teachers at

Stradbroke. Rachel Pontifex, Sarah Button and Anja Rees have

met to collaboratively plan some great units to start the year

with. We have ensured that our units of work support and

compliment the ‘Play Is The Way’ wellbeing program in our

school.

The following topics will be our focus for Term 1 (Year 1 and

Year 5 will have Health during Semester 2)

Reception Our bodies and five senses

Year 2 Safe use of medicines and basic first aid

Year 3 and 4 Identities, strengths and influences

Year 6 and 7 Identity and diversity in healthy

communities

Each class has started the term off with a strong focus on

identity. We have explored the concepts of;

• What is identity?

• What influences can impact on my identity? (family,

friends, clubs, culture, religion, life experiences)

Having a strong sense of identity is so important for our mental

health. It allows our children to stand out as individuals,

develop a sense of well-being and an understanding that we

can celebrate diversity and be proud of who we are.

We look forward to working with our classes in L3. Please

contact us if you have any further questions or would like to

know more about the units we are teaching.

Rachel Pontifex, Sarah Button and Anja Rees

ATTENDANCE

Absence

Please telephone the school between 8.15am – 9.30am on

8365 5621, email the school on

[email protected] or notify us via the

Skoolbag app if your child is absent. If children are absent and

a message has not been received, an email will be sent to

Parent 1 requesting that they contact the school and explain

the absence.

Late

If your child is late (after 8.50am), a caregiver must accompany

him/her to sign in at Student Services in the Front Office before

going to the classroom.

Early

If your child needs to be away from school during school hours,

e.g. to keep a dental or doctor’s appointment, a caregiver is

required to come to Student Services in the Front Office and

sign the child out before leaving the school. Please note

children are not permitted to wait in the pick-up zone as it is

unsupervised. Children must be collected from the classroom

or the Front Office. On return, an adult must accompany the

child back to Student Services and sign them back in.

Exemptions

If a family holiday/travel is planned during term time, a student

exemption form (ED176) needs to be collected from the Front

Office, completed and submitted to the Principal for approval.

ENROLMENTS FOR 2020

If you have children already at Stradbroke and you have a pre-

schooler beginning school next year, please contact the Front

Office and collect an enrolment register application for a place

to be held.

DCSI CHILD-RELATED EMPLOYMENT SCREENING

The DCSI (Department for Communities and Social Inclusion)

Child-related employment screening is the criminal history

screen required for all employees and volunteers in schools

who volunteer for an excursion, camp or sport coaching. There

is no cost for a DCSI screening for volunteers who apply

through the school. The screen can take up to three months to

be processed so we are encouraging volunteers to plan ahead

for this year. Please see Front Office or Student Services staff

to initiate the process.

THANK YOU

Thank you to the many families who attended our R-7

Acquaintance Night. It was great to see you here supporting

your children and their teachers. A big thank you to all the

families who accessed the crèche provided by Kids’ Zone, this

is a great help in keeping all children safe and cared for during

the evening. Thank you also to our teachers for their time and

preparation and commitment to sharing their programs and

routines with families.

LIBRARY

It was great to see so many parents come and meet the

Specialist Teachers in the Library on Acquaintance Night last

week. Those parents were able to see the fantastic changes we

have made to the Library space for 2019. Our vision is to

change the way the Library is used and to provide students

with different spaces in which to learn and interact. Student

feedback so far has been very positive and we have had many

parents drop in for a look because of their children’s

enthusiastic feedback about what is happening in here. We

would like to remind you we are open after school until

3.30pm. One night last week we had a father and son working

on a jigsaw puzzle, a mother and son reading cosily on our

lounges and other parents supporting their children’s

borrowing choices or playing in the construction area and

building on the Lego wall. What a wonderful community

feeling.

March. Emma will be in the first

three (of six) performances by the

Adelaide Theatre Academy (March

8-9), of this classic musical based

on Charles Dickens much loved

story of Oliver Twist. The show is

rated G, and considered one of the

best musicals of all time. Tickets

now available from the Adelaide

Fringe website.

Kalina Stefanov was selected out of 32 girls competing in the

Super 10s National Camp in Melbourne to do the coin toss in

the Women's final at Australian Open 2019. She showed a

great fighting spirit and never gave up. Each state was

represented by 4 girls and 4 boys at the age of 10.

That would not have been possible without the efforts and

dedication of her mentor and coach Todd Perry for 3.5 years,

who put in a lot of hours on and off court throughout the

school holidays to prepare her physically and mentally for this

event. Thank you, Todd! Well done, Kali!

Congratulations to Emerson Warren who has been nominated

for the Swimming 10-19 years team to participate at a School

Sport Australia Championship.

What people are saying… What a relief to come across a program that preserves the

dignity of the child, maintains the self-control of both the

parent and the child and is actually easy to remember when

memory is the first thing to go!

I realized quickly that the 1-2-3 Magic can be a magnificent

preventative measure that any parent can use to avoid

What parents have said… A step dad recalled an incident at the weekend with his 12 year old step daughter. He said that the input he had received the previous week from the course helped him keep his cool and brought a more favourable outcome.

A single Mum who had presented as quite anxious on the first night told the group in week 2 that she had made an appointment with her 15 year old son during the week and had a far more favourable discussion with him than would previously have been the case.

Is your son or daughter gifted?

The Ignite Program is a selective entry program for gifted students entering Year 8 at The

Heights School. Within the Ignite program there are opportunities for students to be

accelerated, and participate in a range of enrichment activities to extend and stimulate their

adept minds. They study, and form friendships with other like-minded peers, in a caring and

nurturing environment.

We continue to be one of the leading schools across the Northern Region, with outstanding

SACE results. In 2016 our students achieved the highest SACE scores across the Northern

Region, and we continued these great results last year. In 2017, 20% of our Stage 2 students

received an ATAR score of over 80. 11% of these students scored above 90, with our highest

achieving an ATAR score of 98.8.

If you believe your child would thrive and benefit from the Ignite program, please complete an

expression of interest form for your child to sit the ACER test conducted at The Heights

School.

The assessment day is Saturday 23rd

February 2019

Expression of Interest Forms are now available online via the following link:

Additional enquiries can be directed to Michelle Crush (Ignite Services) at

The Heights School on 82636244 or via email: [email protected]

Please note that students can only sit the test once.

If a student sits for the assessment then he/she cannot re-sit the test the following year

so we strongly recommend only sitting the test as a Year 7 student.
