MYP SERVICE AND ACTION HOURS
As part of their learning in the MYP, students are encouraged
to demonstrate a personal commitment to service, and act to
make a positive difference to the lives of others and to the
environment. Students are recognised for their service both at
school and in the wider community. At Stradbroke the Year 6
and 7 students will take part in a Community Service program.
The main aims are:
• To encourage responsible citizenship in the world outside the classroom
• To increase students’ sense of responsibility and self esteem
• To allow students to use talents and skills developed beyond the classroom.
Students are given the opportunity to be leaders in numerous
ways including as house captains running the PALS
programme, volunteering in the library, being on traffic duty
and assisting in the canteen. These hours are logged and then
recognised.
An additional recognition of students in Year 7 is to have their
name on the school’s honour board which is situated on the
wall in the breezeway between the main office and Koonga
buildings. This privilege is awarded to students who not only
complete the expected number of hours but also demonstrate
natural leadership, are an asset the school community and
display the characteristics of the IB learner profiles.
Congratulations to the following students who have completed
their hours for 2019:

CANTEEN
THANK YOU! I would like to say a big "thank you" to the
wonderful parents and Year 7 Canteen volunteers who helped
serve last week during our successful Pancake Week. It is
always extremely popular, and at times sticky, and could not
be done without your help.
FRIDAY LUNCH TREATS: We are
really excited to reintroduce

requests for the popular lunch
choice to us and also at the INDIA
TO YOU restaurant on Forest
Avenue, Rostrevor.
Qkr: If you haven't already done so, please check your child's
class details on your app and correct any errors. Please
remember that the cut off for any orders / changes /

ECOWARRIOR REPORT
Did you know that all snap lock bags, silver lined packets (like
chips), biscuit wrappers, such as Tiny Teddies, and muesli bar
wrappers can be recycled?
Hi, we are the K234 class. We are known as the K234s because
we are in K2 and we are year 3/4s.
During the first week of school, Kylie, our teacher, asked us on
Seesaw to write some of the things that we would like to do in
our class in 2019. One of the responses was from Katarina, who
said that she would like our classroom to recycle soft plastics.
As the K234s believe that looking after our environment is
really important, we decided that we would have a bag
dedicated to collecting all the soft plastics that we were
otherwise throwing into landfill. Katarina said that she was
happy to drop them off at a Redcycle point when it filled up –
which she did on the weekend. We are up to our second big
bag of soft plastics recycling.
We know that Mr. Byford’s Year 4 class also collect soft plastics
to recycle, but we’d love every class at Stradbroke, and every
Stradbroke family to also collect and recycle soft plastics. It’s
really easy to do. Firstly you need a bag or a box to collect the
soft plastics in. Then you need a volunteer who is happy to take
the recycling to a Redcycle point when it fills up. The Redcycle
points can be found at the front of any Coles or Woolworths
store.
For more information about soft plastics recycling, please visit
the REDcycle website. https://www.redcycle.net.au/what-to-
redcycle/
Thanks for helping us to keep our planet healthy

What parents have said… A step dad recalled an incident at the weekend with his 12 year old step daughter. He said that the input he had received the previous week from the course helped him keep his cool and brought a more favourable outcome.
A single Mum who had presented as quite anxious on the first night told the group in week 2 that she had made an appointment with her 15 year old son during the week and had a far more favourable discussion with him than would previously have been the case.
Who’s running it? The trainer for this course is Christina Sapio who
completed Pare tshop’s Engaging Adolescents training on 28th October 2014

What’s happening in Arts lessons?
This term we have started with music-rich units in all years R to 5, and I am delighted to share some of our work in this week’s
newsletter.
Do you know what a cabasa is? Ask your Reception student; they have all been learning about instruments and the sounds they
make. We have also been singing lots of action songs and counting songs.
Year 1 students have been learning about beat and rhythm. We listened to In the Hall of the Mountain King and noticed how the
music speeds up. Then we acted it out! Now we are creating a frieze (below) showing the trolls chasing Peer Gynt.around the
mountain tunnels.
Year 2 students have been learning about musical pitch. They have learned about pitch patterns and can play The Blue Danube
Waltz on tuned percussion. Now they are composing their own music to go with a poem.

Is Joseph, Dominic or Georgia holding
the cabasa? And what are those other
two instruments?

Year 3s have been singing. As part of our literacy focus, they have been making innovations on the song My Aunt Came Back.
We have talked about rhymes and half-rhymes, syllables and scanning (fitting syllables into a pattern) and each year 3 class
came up with its own version of the song. Here is K5’s version:
Oh my aunt came back from Ballarat
And brought with her a furry mat
Oh my aunt came back from Alice Springs
And brought with her two golden rings
Oh my aunt came back from Manly Beach
And brought with her a big red peach
Oh my aunt came back from holidays
And brought with her an angry face
Oh my aunt came back from the science show
And brought with her a telescope
Oh my aunt came back from Adelaide Zoo
And brought with her two kangaroos
Oh my aunt came back from Melbourne town
And brought with her a funny clown
Oh my aunt came back from Ballarat
And brought with her a cute black cat
Year 4s have been working hard learning to play recorder. They have also been learning to decipher those lines and dots that
make up music, and realising that it’s like reading- the more practice you do, the better you get!
Year 5s have been working on Cuban Sounds, and learning why Cuba, in the Caribbean, shows both African and Spanish
influences in its Rumba music. Now they are planning and rehearsing their own group versions of this form of music.
