FORPRIMARY SCHOOLS RULES AND GUIDELINES

MINISTRY OF EDUCATION MALAYSIA

STORYTELLING COMPETITION FOR PRIMARY SCHOOLS (LEVEL 2) RULES AND GUIDELINES 1.0 INTRODUCTION 1.1 Storytelling is an effective teaching and learning activity to help improve the standard of English among pupils. 1.2 The Storytelling Activity / Competition will be carried out at school, district / division, state and national levels. 2.0 OBJECTIVES 2.1 To enhance pupils confidence in using English. 2.2 To give pupils the opportunity to use English in an interesting, authentic and creative manner. 2.3 To enhance and improve listening and speaking skills. 2.4 To instill pupils interest in reading and writing in English. 3.0 RULES AND REGULATIONS 3.1. The competition is open to all government-aided schools. Only ONE contestant will represent his / her state at the national level. 3.2 The competition is divided into two sections: Section 1 : Prepared - any story Section 2 : Impromptu 3.3 For Section 1, contestants are to observe the following rules: 3.3.1 Stories presented can be authentic, adapted or originally written. 3.3.2 Stories presented must not touch on sensitive issues such as race, religion, stereotyping, politics, etc. 3.3.3 Stories must be thematically educational. 3.3.4 Contestants are only allowed to use the stand microphone provided to ensure minimal movement. 3.3.5 Props, backdrops and sound effects are not allowed. Any use of these will allow for disqualification by the judges. 3.3.6 Time allocated to present the story is 4 to 5 minutes. The bell will be rung at the 5th minute. Marks will be deducted thereafter. 3.4 For Section 2, contestants are to observe the following rules: 3.4.1 Each contestant picks an envelope containing a card. 3.4.2 After 30 seconds, contestants tell their story based on a word (noun/adjective) or picture (one object) on the chosen card. 3.4.3 Stories told in Section 2 should not be a repetition or reproduction of any story presented in Section 1. Contestants will be disqualified if they do so. 3.4.4 Any inclusion of singing should enhance and not dominate the presentation. 3.4.5 Time allocated to present the impromptu story is 2 to 3 minutes. The bell will be rung at the 3rd minute. Marks will be deducted thereafter. 3.5 Infringement 3.5.1 A maximum of 10 marks will be deducted if a contestant: 3.5.1.1 touches on sensitive issues such as race, religion, politics, etc. 2 marks 3.5.1.2 presents a story below the stipulated time 2 marks for every minute 3.5.1.3 presents a story above the stipulated time 2 marks for every minute 3.5.1.4 uses props, backdrops and electronically-aided sound effects 2 marks 3.5.1.5 overdramatizing 2 marks 3.6 A contestant will be disqualified if: 3.6.1 he / she reads or refers to notes / reading materials. 3.6.2 he / she is prompted by another person. 3.6.3 he / she repeats any story presented in Section 1 during the impromptu session. 4.0 ADJUDICATION 4.1 A panel of at least 3 or 5 judges will be appointed for all the rounds at all levels. The competition at the national level will be judged by a panel of 5 judges, appointed by the Division of Co-curriculum and Arts, Ministry of Education. 4.2 Points will be allocated according to the scoresheet. 4.3 The contestant with the majority of votes will be declared the winner. 4.4 The decision of the judges is final. 4.5 Individual marks will not be disclosed. 5.0 PRIZES 5.1 Plaques and certificates of achievement will be awarded to the winning teams. 5.2 Certificates of participation will be awarded to all participating teams. Note: The winners from the previous year may participate in the current year but the text and presentation must not be an exact replica. This concept paper is valid until further notification or revision from the Ministry of Education and can be used at all levels for competitions organized by the Ministry. Adjudication: 2.1 Language Proficiency Marks will be awarded based on the following: i. correct, clear and accurate pronunciation ii. clear enunciation and intonation iii. correct use of grammar iv. appropriate and effective choice of words (diction) v. fluency 2.2 Presentation / Delivery Marks will be awarded based on the following: i. voice modulation ii. voice projection & clarity 2.3 Theme / Storyline Marks will be awarded based on the following: i. interest and appeal ii. significance and impact of meaning iii. coherence iv. integrated values 2.4 Costume Marks will be awarded based on the following: i. suitability ii. creativity
