The Art of Conversation

What is storytelling?

Storytelling is an interaction between teller and listener; at its best itbecomes a mutual creation.

It has Elements of the oral storytelling art form include visualization (the seeing of images in the mind's eye), and vocal and bodily gestures. In many ways, the art of storytelling draws upon other art forms such as acting, oral interpretation, and performance studies.

What is Story reading?

Story reading is simple reading the words on a

page. While the reader is usually reading for

comprehension, there is less imagination involved.

Story reading does not involve the audience in the same way that storytelling

does.

Storytelling versus Story Reading

• 1. More give and take exists between the audience and the storyteller during the storytelling than during story reading.

• 2. Because storytelling is an oral interpretation of a traditional, literary, or

personal experience story, the tale is told in a natural manner with all of the flavor and language of a particular tradition.

Differences continued

• 5. Storytelling develops children’s imaginations. They get to decide what the characters look like and picture the events in their minds.

• 6. Storytelling strongly attracts children to books. It has a power that reading stories does not, for it frees the storyteller to use creative techniques.

7. Storytelling, as an extension of children’s literature, is one means by which children with diverse literacy levels and educational needs achieve unity of ideas and establish harmony, both within and among them.

8. Storytelling is a natural medium that endows a feeling of shared purpose on the children.

9. Storytelling is a fun and effective way to learn concepts, vocabulary, language, and to acquire comprehension skills.

10. When a teacher tells a story, and then shows the pictures in the book, the students have the opportunity to develop their skills of oral recall and sequencing as they tell the teacher what was happening in each picture.

11. If students are allowed to draw their version of characters or events before viewing the book, they can then use skills in comparison and contrast as they explain how their pictures are similar or different.

So how can I use this in my classroom?

• There are many different ways to incorporate media from the Internet into your lessons to make them more comprehensible and fun.

• Instead of quickly passing over the readings, teachers can quickly turn them into one of the strongest parts of the lesson, especially with the use of the internet. Let’s practice some innovative techniques now.
