Rich and Ginnie Hunsaker ‘52 RICH AND GINNIE HUNSAKER, both graduates of the

class of 1952, understand well how the University of

Redlands prepares students to lead successful, purpose-

filled lives. Though Rich jokes about having been a

“benchwarmer” as one unskilled in the art of college

football, his ultimate success in the real estate industry

made him a star player in his field. Ginnie, a member of

Chapel Choir and Orchesis, a modern dance club, began

her career as a kindergarten teacher and through her

community service and volunteer leadership has changed

the lives of countless young people.

Their experiences as undergraduates taught them how

the guiding influence of inspiring professors leaves an

indelible impression, helping shape the hearts and

minds of students in lasting ways. With these experiences

in mind, the Hunsakers have demonstrated a lifelong

commitment to nurturing similar opportunities for

future generations. In this spirit, they have made a

transformative gift, the largest in University history, to

establish the Richard and Virginia Hunsaker Scholarship

Prize. Designed to recognize and support exceptional

student achievement in leadership and civic engagement,

this highly competitive award goes beyond traditional

scholarship programs. The Hunsaker Scholarship Prize

will meet each recipient’s full demonstrated financial need

for all four years at Redlands while also providing support

in securing internships and research opportunities within

their fields of study. “Ginnie and I believe wholeheartedly

in the power of the University of Redlands to shape the

leaders of tomorrow,” Rich said. “Our hope is that this

gift will inspire new generations of students to attend

Redlands and become leaders on campus, in their

communities, and throughout the world.”

Prior to the establishment of the Hunsaker Scholarship

Prize, Rich and Ginnie endowed four faculty chairs

over the past 30 years—the Richard C. Hunsaker

Chair of Management, the Virginia Hunsaker Chair in

Distinguished Teaching, and the University Chair in

Global Business. The Hunsakers also named the H. Jess

and Donna Colton Senecal Endowed Dean’s Chair in

Business in honor of their classmate and fellow Trustee

Jess Senecal and his wife Donna, both lifelong friends.

The namesake Hunsaker University Center serves as the

vibrant hub of student life on campus and is but one

example where the couple’s legacy of giving is seen and

felt on campus.

For many years, Rich and Ginnie have given their

time, leadership, and expertise to the University’s Board

of Trustees. Rich, who has rejoined the board in this

academic year, served as chairman from 1985 to 2000.

Ginnie served from 2003 to 2012. Together, they co-

chaired the $107 million Centennial Campaign, which

forever changed the University’s face and future.

Rich and Ginnie have been recognized with some

of Redlands’ most prestigious awards, receiving their

respective honorary doctorates in Humane Letters in 2001,

and sharing the Centennial Award in 2006. In addition,

Rich and Ginnie are longtime supporters of several Orange

County education and arts institutions.

The generosity of the Hunsakers is without parallel at

the University of Redlands. The driving force behind every

major gift they have made is a desire to inspire others

to join them in philanthropic support of the University.

Theirs is an attitude of the heart, an abiding love for their

alma mater and devotion to its enduring success. Their

magnanimity sets the example for all of us to follow.

ALMA MATER HISTORY

Our Alma Mater was written in 1914 to go along with the American folk song “The Little Old Red Shawl My Mother Wore,”

composed by Charles Moreland, and the musical-theatre tune “He Never Wanders Far from His Own Fire.”

It is sung at commencements, convocations, and other formal occasions.
