Novel source of THz radiation (corrugated dielectric capillary):
• Terahertz frequency range includes frequencies from 0.3 to 10 THz.
• This part of electromagnetic spectrum has a variety of potential applications ranging from fundamental, e.g. studies of physical systems dynamics, to security applications, such as screening of concealed materials in airports.
Measurements of THz radiation:

Story from: DPhil Oxford 2008, Christine Clarke: "The IP Collision Feedback System at the ILC and its Sensitivity to Expected Electromagnetic Backgrounds"
SLAC National Accelerator Laboratory (USA)
• SLAC has 50+ years of accelerator science • Operated by Stanford University for the DOE Office of
Science • High energy physics experiments resulted in 3 Nobel Prizes • Now, SLAC focuses on using accelerators as light sources:
• We produce the world’s brightest x-rays • We discover new drugs, new materials, new clean fuels,
study how proteins work, study materials at 2 million degrees C and much more!
World’s longest particle accelerator

Located in Silicon Valley, California
Electrons and positrons are accelerated to 99.9999999% speed of light

SLAC User and Test Beam Facilities
• Scientists from all around the world can perform experiments at SLAC • From development of cancer treatments to
materials for jet engines to detectors for Antarctica
• 3,400 scientists use SLAC’s light source and accelerator test beam facilities annually
• We continue to revolutionise accelerator science: • World-leading program in building
accelerators for the future- made from plasma!
