Nikki/Salve - - what are your thoughts about swapping some of the photos for this instance of the

Commons home page (so it feels a little different than other times you see it)? See my for instance

    suggestions below:

See screen grab, above. Suggest we keep the current Millennials home page, but

    a) Swap out the four key images (Ill give you replacements, below), and

    b) re-order and shuffle the Featured Member Collections so they look a little different.

o Roosevelt Inaugural Medal, 1905 (Or, History Explorer: Roosevelt Inaugural

    Medal, 1905)

Theodore Roosevelt met sculptor Augustus Saint-Gaudens in the 1890s,

when T.R. was an aspiring young politician, and Saint -Gaudens was

establishing a reputation as a brilliant artist. When Roosevelt was elected

President in 1904 and needed an inaugural med al, he gave the

commission to Saint-Gaudens after rejecting the standard, unmemorablemedal typically produced for this occasion by the United States Mint.

Saint-Gaudens's results shattered precedent. The piece was modern in all

senses of the word. There was no attempt to beautify or romanticize the

President's head on the obverse, yet the image clearly conveyed vision

and power. The reverse was, if anything, even more groundbreaking. The

magnificent, left-facing eagle epitomized authority and presence, wh ile

displaying a classical ancient style. (The same eagle is used on the Saint-

Gaudens $10 in 1907). This bird unquestionably ruled all it surveyed.

Saint-Gaudens's success with this medal convinced Roosevelt that the

artist was the partner he needed to c ollaborate on a pet project: the

redesign of America's money. Saint-Gaudens signed on, and the plotting

began. But the potential for trouble hovered on the horizon: this medalhad been struck, not by the United States Mint in Philadelphia, but by

2.6.8 Description (1 paragraph)+ read more at the [source]

y o The year 2002 marked the 100th anniversary of the political cartoon that sparked the creation of the Teddy Bear. One of the

first produced toy plush bears sold as Teddy is part of the Museums political history co llection and is currently on view inThe

American Presidency: A Glorious Burden exhibition.

    y

y o While bear hunting Mississippi and Louisiana in 1902, President Theodore Roosevelt decided it was unsportsmanlike to shoot

a bear that had been surrounded by dogs, rendered unconscious and tied to a tree. Roosevelt asked a hunting guide to kill the bear with a

knife, putting it out of its misery. This event became the subject of an editorial cartoon by Clifford Berryman of theWashin gton Post who,

neglecting to do cument the death of the bear, portrayed Roosevelt in a compassiona te light, sparing the bears life, and thus igniting the

teddy bear craze. The cartoon was redrawn and published several times and the image of the bear subsequently changed, becomin g

smaller and more endearing, finally depicted as a bear cub.

    y o

y o The story of Roosevelts unsuccessful bear hunt sparked the imagination ofMorrisMichtom, who asked his wife Rose to

create a toy plush bear to commemorate the event. According to family lore, Mic htom said he received personal approval from Roosevelt

himself when he asked to use the Presidents nickname Teddy for the bear. The popularity of the bear led to the highly succ essful Ideal

Novelty and Toy Company in New York, founded by Michtom around 1903.

    y o

yo Benjamin Michton, son of Ideals founder, gave the bear to Roosevelts grandson Kermit, his wife and their children, in late1963. The toy was in the familys possession for just one month before curator Herb Collins accepted it for the museum i n January, 1964.

The bear dates to 1903 and is in perfect condition.

this screen we show her collection (2.12) instead of the commons object page. Then I can write a

narrative that takes them to 2.8 (commons object page)

The methods that presidents and the American people have usedto

communicate with each other are the subject of this section of The

American Presidency: A Glorious Burden, an online exhibition from the

Smithsonians National Museum of American History. Students will

learn how mass media, the entertainment industry and consumer

products are all used to conduct a national dialogue between the

    president and his constituents.
