Announced and Unannounced Audits
The BRC audit grading system is related to the number and type of non-conformities with food safety standards. Non-conformities are categorised by minor, major and critical, depending on the nature of the item. The table below outlines the grading score process. The + symbol represents the Unannounced score.

HELPFUL INFORMATIONResources to help you prepare for a BRC Audit.
IMPORTANT DETAILS
Exclusion dates: Exclusion days are used for instances where a site may be shut down or under renovation etc. Option 1 audits can have up to 15 days excluded. Option 2 audits up to 10 days can be excluded.
What is the duration of an unannounced audit? Is it the same as a standard announced audit? This depends on a variety of factors including product range, audit site, number of staff etc. The best place to start is the BRC Audit Duration Calculator: www.brcglobalstandards.com/Portals/0/media/files/download/F038%20%20Audit%20duration%20Calculator%20Final%2030.1.12.pdf
Costs: Typically, the unannounced audit will cost the same as your current announced audit, however, costs vary between different certified bodies. You will need to discuss with them, their charges for conducting an audit. BRC Storage & Distribution Issue 3 provides details on costs associated with auditing.
Changing Certification body: You can change certification body within the first 3 months, ensuring you notify the new certification body that you are enrolled in the unannounced programme.
Failing the audit: A new announced audit can be conducted after 28 days, once the non-conformities raised have been addressed.
