AEB provides a real opportunity for reduction in crashes, and their associated material damage and personal injury. As the demand for these systems increases, the technology behind them continues to develop fast, resulting in even more effective systems. With 75% of all crashes occurring at less than 20mph, Autonomous Emergency Braking (AEB) has the capacity to completely avoid the most common real world accident scenarios and to mitigate many others, keeping drivers safe and vehicles on the road.

A real world study from the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety in the US showed that AEB reduces crashes by up to 25%. Following analysis by Thatcham on the potential benefits of widespread adoption of low-speed AEB into the UK fleet, UK insurers have incentivised the adoption of AEB systems into new cars.

A significant reduction has been offered to the group rating of vehicles which have AEB as standard fit and are also successful in meeting the requirements of Thatcham’s AEB test protocol. In the 50 group system, a consequent premium reduction on a specific vehicle type on a like for like basis is of the order of 10%, however this remains the decision of individual insurers.

Most manufacturers now have an AEB system, a FCW (Forward Collision Warning), or both, on offer or in development. The availability of these systems as standard is constantly increasing and is not merely restricted to premium models. The following charts show which UK vehicles now have AEB (or FCW) fitted either as standard or as an option.

IT’S AS EASY AS AEBNew vehicle systems are now available which automatically apply emergency braking to a vehicle if a crash is imminent. Autonomous Emergency Braking (AEB) technology enables a vehicle to avoid a low-speed car-to-car impact, which would typically lead to substantial vehicle damage or claims for whiplash injuries, or mitigate a high speed crash reducing injury and damage.

AEB systems use signals from LIDAR (Light Detection And Ranging), RADAR or camera sensors mounted on the vehicle, which detect that a vehicle is about to strike another and apply full emergency braking to either mitigate the accident or avoid it altogether.

LIDAR sensors are designed to work at low speeds and monitor the distance between a vehicle and the vehicle in front. RADAR sensors are fitted at the front of the vehicle, work at motorway speeds and are capable of detecting obstacles at long range.

Camera sensors are capable of distinguishing pedestrians and other vulnerable road users as well as vehicles. Cameras, LIDAR and RADARs can work in conjunction with one another in a process called ‘sensor fusion’ which detects vehicles and pedestrians at greater distances and at faster speeds.

These fitment ratings are a guide for anyone purchasing a new car. Both AEB and FCW systems are rated, so please ask the manufacturer before purchase for full information about the operation of the system you are considering. AEB systems will auto-

matically apply braking in an emergency if the driver is unresponsive, and some will also issue a warning. Whereas FCW systems will only issue a warning and apply brake support boosting the brake force, but require the driver to react.

Please note the coloured bars show the proportion of the range with each type of fitment. Correct at time of print, Oct. 2013.
