The term burnout was first used by NewYork psychotherapist Freudenberger in1974. Although today it is widely used todescribe a state of emotional and physicalexhaustion, there is no standard scientificd e fi n i t i o n .

A list of definitions according to Rookshows that in all definitions there is an

overlap of the terms 'physical, mental, emotional exhaustion, depersonalisation, reduced work efficacy, unfulfilled needsand expectations, disillusionment, failure toadapt to work'.^

In this paper I refer to the working definitiondrown up by Schaufeli & Enzmann:''Burnout is a persistent, negative, work-related state of mind in 'normal' individualsthat is primarily characterised by exhaustion, which is accompanied by distress, a senseof reduced effectiveness, decreasedmotivation, and the development ofdysfunctional attitudes and behaviour atwork. This psychological condition developsgradually but may remain unnoticed for along time by the individual involved. It resultsfrom a misfit between intentions and realityin the job. Often burnout is self-perpetuatingbecause of inadequate coping strategiesthat ore associated with the syndrome."^

In my practice I have successfully treatedmore than 30 burnout patients so far.

• Short-tempered ness

The term burnout syndrome con now befound under key Z 73.0, i.e. under'M isce l l aneous ' and in ICD-10 under'Factors influencing health status andcontact with health services' .

It is important to tell you that as Bicombioresonance therapists we must not hoveany concerns about treating burnoutpatients. There are very clear ohvsicalsymptoms which we can treat successfully. It is important when taking a thorough casehistory to first distinguish burnout frompsychological disorders, such as symptomsof manic depression. If I suspect patientsare displaying these symptoms I refer themto a psychologist and treat their physicalsymptoms at a later stage with the supportof Bicom bioresonance therapy.

The most important factor in treatingburnout with Bicom bioresonance therapyis to find the stresses present. Thesesymptoms were present in all of the burnoutpatients that I treated:• Geopathy• Environmental stresses (electrosmog,

radioactivity, environmental toxins)• M e t a l s• F o o d i n t o l e r a n c e s• V i r u s e s• Va c c i n a t i o n s• S c a r s

Certain blocks occur time and again:

• Laterality disorders• S h o c k b l o c k s• S t ress b locks• Overocidity• Hormonal blocks in the pituitary gland• Blocks in the hormone region• Blocks in adrenal ine re lease

W h o d o e s b u r n o u t a f f e c t ?

The general consensus is now that burnoutsyndrome can affect all social groups andalmost all age groups, as cases of thedisorder have been found in schoolchildren, researchers as well as theunemployed and pensioners. Also patientswho have been treated by me come fromall areas of society and cover a range ofoccupations, from hairdressers andteachers to administrative clerks. They allhave one thing in common, however: theyare highly motivated people who reallyenjoy (or enjoyed) their work or otheractivities and always push themselves totheir limit. And they believe that they cantackle their disorder using the samerationale, which means that they are alwaysfighting against it and consequently burnout. People who just treat their job as a joband take a more relaxed approach are notat risk of burnout in my opinion. Theywould sooner retire to bed rather than riskbecoming affected by burnout.

According to a study by the TechnikerKronkenkosse health insurance fund andthe F.A.Z. Inst i tute ent i t led "Customer

Compass Stress" 20095 one in threeGermans feels permanently stressed, withthe 30-39 age group consideringthemselves to be most affected. More thanone in every two employees suffers fromagitation, time pressure, informationoverload and pressure to be permanentlyavailable via e-mail, mobile phone orBlackberry. Nine out often school childrenand students say that they feel stressed. The top stress factor is exams, as well aspressure to get higher marks, quarrels withclass mates, bullying, conflicts with teachers/lecturers, anxiety about the future and soon. Many professions leave individualsparticularly prone to developing stress-related symptoms: 37% of all shift workersfeel permanently stressed, perpetually

exhausted and burnt out. Four out of ten

people constantly working overtime are onthe brink of burnout. More than half of

respondents had the sense that their lifehad become more stressful in recent years.

Irrespective of the difficulty in differentiatingbetween this and other psychologicaldisorders such as

• affective (mood) disorder• exhaustion depression• chronic fatigue syndrome• n e u r a s t h e n i a

which include burnout, health insurancefunds confirm the number of d isorders in

patients suffering from burnout syndrome, which has been increasing for some yearsnow. The Techniker Krankenkosse (TK)speaks in terms of ten million sick dayseach year,*^ and according to theBetriebliche Krankenkosse (BKK) some ninemil l ion Germans are affected.

This has a considerable financial impact onsociety: according to the German FederalHealth Monitoring System psychologicaldisorders and i l lnesses had cost healthinsurance funds EUR 26.7 billion by 2006.According to EASG' this equated to a costof EUR 20 billion for companies.

If the human body is feeling stressed, thebrain activates the entire body and releasesenergy reserves in order to meet anypotential threat, either through fight orflight. The nerve pathways signal to thesuprarenal glands to release stresshormones and neurotransmitters, such asadrenaline, noradrenaline and Cortisol. Thisleads among other things to the followingbiochemical reactions in the body:• "The hear t beats fas ter and b lood

pressure rises. As a result more oxygenand sugar is transported to the muscles.

^ ibid.^ (European Agency for Safety and Health at

Work)

• Breathing speeds up in order to increasethe absorption of oxygen.

• Digestion is suppressed.• Blood is directed away from the skin

and the internal organs to the brain andskeletal muscles.

• The muscles tense up.• The blood vessels constrict and the blood

is better able to clot to protect the bodyand contain blood loss in the event ofinjury.

• More sweat is secreted, because the bodyneeds to cool down.

• The pupils dilate.• The liver converts glycogen into glucose,

which is combined with the free fattyacids in order to provide immediateenergy for the muscles.

• Sensitivity to pain is reduced."®

According to the principle of fight or flight(which also includes testing, competition, presentations etc.) the organism will returnits system to its normal state. If there is norelease from permanent stress this can leadto a variety of physical symptoms, which orealso frequently diagnosed in connection withbu rnou t :

• Continuous production of the stresshormones adrenal ine and Cort isol actsas a type of toxin in the body, particularly the neural pathways:environmental toxins and primarilymetals are deposited in the nerve tissue, particularly in the myelin sheaths

• Musc le tens ion• High blood pressure• Digestive system disorders• Weaker immune defences• Depression owing to excessive Cortisol

r e l e a s e• C a r d i o v a s c u l a r d i s o r d e r• Released fats are deposited in the form

of cholesterol in the vessels which can

For all our burnout patients we start withthe basic program. Since geopathicstresses were found in all patients, it isimportant to integrate a geopathycompensation into the basic therapy fromthe outset. Environmental stresses, metals, food intolerances, viruses etc. then followdepending on test readings.

At the same time as dissolving the blocksand eliminating toxins the stressed bodyshould be systematically built up. Treatmentwith the CTT five element set is the keycomponent in my therapy system and Iconsider it to be THE build-up program. This makes elimination simpler and easierto tolerate, stabilises the patient duringtreatment and also saves time, becauseI can also use it in the second channel.Sometimes it is only necessary to carry outbuild-up programs. For example, 900(Activate vitality) is a tried and testedp r o g r a m .

It may also be the case that several sessionsare needed in order to eliminate a stress, something I always recommend withEpstein Barr viruses, for example. It is alsonormal for some blocks, such as stress orshock blocks, to be treated over severalsessions, in some cases as many as threet i m e s .

You should not find this surprising -burnout patients often suffer a certaintension or strain over a number of years, which means that certain processes nolonger occur automatically. The body cries

out for support, we provide it andsometimes it is needed more than once.

I generally treat patients once a week.Programs can therefore result in informationbeing sent to the body and relieving thepatient's stress. It is rare for me to providetreatment twice in one week. To phase outtreatment after elimination a fortnightlysession can be added in which furtherblock therapy, stabilisation of the fiveelements, eliminating overacidity orsupporting the liver are treated. Butgenerally the patient has alreadyrecovered by this point; their body is for themost part able to realign and readjustitself.

In the case studies at the end of this paperthe therapy steps are set out in detail forthree patients and there is a brief overviewof a further seven cases. All patients arenow doing well, working again or have theirfamily issues under control again. Only afew continue to come into the practice forstabilisation treatment once a month.

Support through medication and otherm e a s u r e s

I use relatively little medication to supportmy therapy. Ayurvedic herbs in the form ofVeda products from Maharishi Veda haveproven particularly effective, e.g. Veda 208to stabilise the nervous system. Veda 208also helps to stop depressive thoughts.Veda 538 is a brain tonic used to build upnew synapses. Dysto-loges is ahomeopathic drug which brings about arelaxation of the vegetative nervous system.I also successfully use Nervoregin ampoulesfrom the company Pfluger in order tostabilise the nervous system. MK aktiv fromMK Naturpharmo is a dietary foodstuff usedto treat an increased need for micronutrientsin burnout cases.

If patients have acute anxiety, I also givethem Aconitum nacellus C 30, 1x5globules as well as Ignatia C 30,5 globules/day. I prescribe Ignatia, whichmeans 'gracious' or 'merciful', particularly

to those patients who ore tough onthemselves and believe that they can usetheir mind to overcome their disorder. The

drug helps patients become 'moregracious' towards themselves and others.

Losea soft capsules contain a highpercentage of lavender oil, which is calmingand good for a restful sleep. This is also trueof the product Mohorishi Ayurveda AAA 107:two tablets before going to sleep ensurepatients get all-important sleep during thetreatment phase.

It is also important to maintain the milieu inan alkaline state. To support the patient,acid-base drugs such as Basica and basebaths are proven to reduce acid levels.

And last but not least I tell my burnoutpatients to take a long walk in the fresh airtwice a day, because during treatment theyhave a greater need for oxygen and thepower of nature can prove amazinglybenefic i a l .
