Do it NOW So the holidays are over and we are now assailed with injunctions to change ourselves and become healthier, wealthier and happier. Every newspaper and magazine tells us about the latest exercise regime, diet, career development steps and we start the year with good intentions, hoping to banish the post-Christmas blues and long nights by ‘improving’ ourselves. Yet as we well know, the vast majority of these resolutions will slip away and we will slide back into our old ways. Genuine change takes a great deal of sustained commitment and is very easily sidelined when real life gets in the way. So we get up early for a run or a gym class for a few weeks, but then we have a busy spell at work and miss a couple of sessions and before we know it two exercise-free months go by. We write the first few pages of a novel but then get stuck and chapter one remains abandoned. There is a change we can all make quite easily though – one which will actually give us time and maybe even pave the way for the fitter, thinner, novel-writing person we want to be. Every time you put off making that call or sending that email or filing those bank statements, stop. Don’t leave it until after lunch, or tomorrow. Do it NOW. If you aren’t in a position to email, call or whatever, make a note to do it as soon as you can, but Do it NOW. If you prefer to do all your admin in one go, schedule a couple of hours a week and stick to it so that when that times comes around, you are in the right frame of mind to Do it NOW. Taking immediate action and clearing all the boring, tricky or complicated jobs, not only frees up time but it also creates a better mindset.
