CASSE SEES NO REASON TOSTOP NOW WITH >EMPIRE=
By Alan Carasso As has been well-documented, next Saturday=s GI Belmont S.will be missing GI Kentucky Derby winner Always Dreaming(Bodemeister) and Cloud Computing (Maclean=s Music),victorious in the GI Preakness S., each of whom will focus onsecond-season objectives like the GI Haskell Invitational, the GI Travers S. or the GII Jim Dandy S. or some combination of theabove. Of those listed by the New York Racing Association as probablefor the >Test of the Champion,= just two horses will havecompeted in each of the legs of the 2017 Triple Crown--LookinAt Lee (Lookin At Lucky), second in the Derby and a running-onfourth in the Preakness; and Classic Empire (Pioneerof the Nile),the reigning Eclipse Award-winning 2-year-old male whoendured a horror trip when fourth in the Derby before just beingdenied victory at Old Hilltop. The latter=s trainer, Mark Casse, isapproaching the year=s final Classic with a can-do attitude andwith the impression that his barn houses the 3-year-old king ofthe hill, despite defeats in Kentucky and Maryland. AI think I do,@ Casse told media assembled on an NTRA nationalteleconference Thursday afternoon when asked if he believes heconditions the divisional leader. AOur horse just hadunbelievably bad luck in the Kentucky Derby. He ran hard in[victory in] the Arkansas Derby--he probably ran harder in theKentucky Derby than any of his races--and then he showed up inthe Preakness. Cont. p3
GRYDER THE RIDER RETURNS TO
CALIFORNIA By Lynne Snierson
AGo West, young man@ was terrific advice when dispensed by
Horace Greeley in the 19th Century, and it works as well today
for the peripatetic Aaron Gryder.
After picking up only eight mounts while in Monmouth Park=s
jockey colony during the current meet, he packed up and
headed out Monday. This Friday, the winner of 3,727 career
races and 84 graded stakes begins anew at Northern California=s
Golden Gate Fields.
AThere is a big pool of riders for a small pool of horses at
Monmouth, so you=d better be one of the ones in demand. I
wasn=t in demand,@ Gryder, 47, said. AThe purpose of going back
East two winters ago at Aqueduct was to generate some
business. I did decent the first year, but last year during the
winter I didn=t do so well, so I figured Monmouth was a place
where I=d have an opportunity to ride for some of the New York
outfits and the New Jersey people I used to ride for.@ Cont. p5

Casse Sees No Reason to Stop Now with >Empire= cont. from p1
Casse continued, AThat=s one of the reasons we=re going to
show up for the Belmont. We still feel we have the best 3-year-
old and we want to prove it. We=ve been so close and we feel
we=ve been a bit unlucky. Hopefully the third
time is the charm.@
Casse, who has steadily risen through the
ranks to become one of North America=s top
trainers, earned his first Classic placing in the
Preakness and he readily adopts the mentality
that when horses are doing well, you lead
them over.
AWe=re not afraid to run,@ he commented. AI
think too many horses sit in the barn when
they should be running. If we can run, we=re
going to run. He=s ready to run, so we=re going
to do it.
He continued, AI would love for the horses all
to run in all three races because I think it
would truly prove who the best horse is--not
only the best, but the toughest. I=m not
disappointed that Always Dreaming is not
coming, because I think the Preakness showed that he was not
at the top of his game right now. I think those connections are
wise. I am disappointed the Preakness winner is not going to be
there. If he=s fine, why not? [Going into the Preakness], he had
six weeks= rest and we had three races in five weeks. I really
don=t know why he=s not in there, but they own him and Chad
[Brown] trains him so they get that privilege.
But I=m disappointed he=s not there.@
With a little more than a week to go, Casse
suggests that whatever may have been
bothering Classic Empire earlier this season is
a thing of the past and that the colt, who will
retire to join his Triple Crown-winning
paternal half-brother American Pharoah at
Ashford Stud at the conclusion of his racing
days, has taken his recent exertions in his
stride.
AI thought going into the Arkansas Derby that
he looked good. I thought going into the
Kentucky Derby that he looked better and was
training better than he did into the Arkansas
Derby. I thought at Pimlico, he was better for
the Preakness than he was for the Kentucky
Derby,@ Casse opined. AI think our horse has
handled it well. He trained great [Thursday] morning and he
seems to be thriving.@ Cont. p4

Casse Sees No Reason to Stop Now with >Empire= cont.
Casse continued, ATepin thrived on running and I think Classic
Empire thrives on running. If we get beat in the Belmont, we=re
not going to say he was tired. We
know our horse, we know what
we=re up against and we=re ready
for the challenge. If we get beat,
we sure aren=t going to blame his
schedule. He=s actually getting
bigger and stronger with racing.
He=s telling us he wants to run, so
we=re going to let him run.@
As for tactics in a race run
historically at a moderate pace,
Casse hinted that Classic Empire
will be prominent, if not at the
head of affairs.
AIn the Breeders= Cup and in the
Preakness, [jockey] Julien
[Leparoux] got pretty aggressive with him early to get him onto
the bit and get him up there,@ the trainer explained. AIn the
Belmont, I=m not so sure we want to do that. I=m hoping he=ll
just fall out of there and I=d like to see him run like he did in the
Arkansas Derby, where he was back a little bit.@ But, he added,
AIf nobody wants to lead, we=ll be on it.@
And as for the grueling Belmont distance? AYou never like the unknown,@ he admitted. AOne thing abouthim--he broke his maiden going 4 1/2 furlongs and he was stillfinishing going a mile and a quarter on a tough racetrack [in the
Kentucky Derby], so I find it toughto believe that can=t go a mile and ahalf. The indication is that he=s agreat horse, a true athlete and thathe can do a little bit of everything.@ The Belmont will be thecenterpiece of a busy weekend forCasse, who said he will saddle:World Approval (Northern Afleet)in the GI Manhattan S; Salty(Quality Road) in the GI Acorn S.; Awesome Slew(Awesome Again) in the GI MetMile; Corporate Queen (ColonelJohn) and Dream Dancing (Tapit) inThursday=s GIII Wonder Again S.;

Gryder cont. from p1
But with Monmouth fighting to fill stalls and races, the old
mainstays are gone.
Moreover, family comes first.
AIt makes no sense for me to be there if I=m not riding. It only
makes sense if I=m doing extremely well because I=m doing this
to help my kids. I was 3,000 miles away from them. They need a
father,@ he said.
Gryder=s son Christian is 17 and planning to join the U.S.
Marine Corps after high school graduation next year, and his
daughter Grace turns 15 in August.
AThese are critical ages where they need stability and need
their parents around. It=s very important I be there for them,@
said Gryder, who is divorced from their mother. ADuring the last
two years when I was riding back East I didn=t get to spend as
much time with them as I would have liked.@
Not only has he been on the East Coast of late, his enduring
journey over the last three decades would evoke envy in even
the most adventurous traveler.
After growing up in the shadow of Santa Anita Park and never
wanting to be anything but a jockey since the age of four,
Gryder won his first race at 17 at the old Agua Caliente in
Mexico in 1986 and his first Grade I score came in Hollywood
Park=s 1987 Matriarch S.
Since then he=s earned 18 leading rider titles while based at
Aqueduct, Arlington Park, Churchill Downs, Hollywood, Golden
Gate Fields, and tracks across the Southwest. He=s relocated his
tack to Hong Kong and Saudi Arabia, and the itinerary includes
stops at tracks from Ascot to Australia.
AI=ve ridden all around the world, but I haven=t been there
enough for my kids in the past. I need to be with them now,@ he
emphasized.
Although his children live in Southern California, where the
circuit is mighty tough, Gryder realizes business will be brisker in
Northern California. Even better, the four-day live race week
allows him to balance family with career as they can be together
on dark days.
Gryder reunited with agent Dennis Patterson, who said he got
a call from his old client out of the blue last weekend. The last
time Gryder was based at Golden Gate, from February 2011 to
June 2012, Patterson said they teamed to win an impressive 270
races in those 17 months. Cont. p6

But Gryder hasn=t won a graded stakes race since 2014, a
Grade I or Group 1 event since he and Well Armed took the
2009 Dubai World Cup, or a Breeders= Cup since he piloted
Calidoscopio to victory in the 2012 GII BC Marathon. His last
score, in a $47,000 waiver claimer at Aqueduct, dates Jan. 12.
Nonetheless, the welcome mat is out at Golden Gate.
AI=m happy Aaron=s coming
back. We had a lot of success
together here and I=m anxious
to win with him,@ said leading
trainer John Martin, who legs
up Gryder on three of his four
calls on Friday=s card. AHe=s a
good rider and a good guy and
he fits well here. I have a big,
balanced barn with 47 horses.
He can=t miss here because I=m
going to give him a lot of live
horses to ride. There are some
good riders here so it will take
a little while for me to get him
on a lot of horses, but I=ve got
some I can put him on right
away. I expect him to win a couple in his first days here.@
Patterson was pleased to report interest is robust from other
outfits as well, and a very fit and gung-ho Gryder said he is
invigorated, excited, and eager to ride for as many as he can.
Although the attractive, articulate, smart and personable
Gryder excelled as an on-air racing analyst for TVG, HRTV, NBC
Sports and UK Productions overseas, has acted in commercials,
been part of the reality TV series Jockeys, and even performed
in an episode of The Sopranos, a second career is on hold.
AI=m not ready to hang it up if I can generate the business. I
want to stay in the game. I love it and I love riding horses,@ he
said with the passion evident in his voice. AI still get a big rush
out of it.@

MULTIPLIER TO RUN IN THE BELMONT
Multiplier (The Factor), winner of the GIII Illinois Derby, will
run in the GI Belmont S. June 10 unless he gives trainer Brendan
Walsh a reason not to, the conditioner said Thursday.
"But he's giving me every indication right now that he's doing
great," Walsh offered.
Walsh will be aboard for the colt=s final work, which will likely
take place Saturday at Keeneland, and Multiplier will fly out of
Louisville Tuesday. Jockey Joel Rosario, who was aboard for the
gray=s sixth-place effort in the GI Preakness S. May 20, will retain
the mount for the Belmont.
"I thought he ran well,@ Walsh remarked. AHe was sixth, but
beaten three-quarters of a length for third, and we didn't have a
very good trip. He got shuffled right back at the start. When they
turned for home, he was really coming with a run. If you watch
it, he got stopped at the head of the straight twice. He came
back rolling again, but then it was too late.@
Walsh believes his charge is actually better suited for the 1
1/2-mile Test of a Champion at Big Sandy.
"[The Belmont] might be his race,@ the trainer commented.
AEven going to the Preakness, I was hoping he'd run a race good
enough to justify going to the Belmont. Even though he's not
really bred to go that far, he's got plenty of stamina in his back
family. Who knows? I think the track will suit him, that he's cut
out for that. Joel knows him now, too. I think he's a horse you've
got to know a little bit."

NINETEEN SET FORINVESTEC DERBY
Only Finn McCool (Ire) (Galileo {Ire}) was removed from the
equation for Saturday=s G1 Investec Derby at Thursday=s
confirmation stage, with his trainer Aidan O=Brien still
represented by six colts headed by possible favourite and >TDN
Rising Star= Cliffs of Moher (Ire) (Galileo {Ire}). He has been
drawn in 13, with fellow son of Galileo Capri (Ire) in the Alucky@
stall 10, which was the berth of Galileo himself, Shahrastani,
Reference Point (GB), Nashwan, Quest For Fame (GB), Generous
(Ire), Sir Percy (GB) and Ruler of the World (Ire). Galileo
accounts for five of the 19 runners, while another four are sired
by his sons, so the Coolmore great=s presence will be keenly felt
once again. Ryan Moore is on Cliffs of Moher, with Donnacha
O'Brien on Venice Beach (Ire) (Galileo {Ire}), Colm O'Donoghue
on Douglas Macarthur (Ire) (Galileo {Ire}), Seamie Heffernan on
Capri, Padraig Beggy on Wings of Eagles (Fr) (Pour Moi {Ire}) and
Ana O'Brien on The Anvil (Ire) (Galileo {Ire}).
Galileo=s pinnacle at stud came via Frankel (GB) and the
AFrankel factor@ is a key topic again here. Although the
Juddmonte immortal never undertook the Derby challenge
himself, he has two strong contenders from his first crop in
Cracksman (GB) and Eminent (Ire) in 2017.

BEST FOR LAST AT BROODMARE SALE Book 1 of the Magic Millions National Broodmare Sale came to
a close on the Gold Coast on Thursday and the best was indeed
saved for the last day, with the Group 2 winner and multiple
Group 1-placed Gregers (Aus) (Commands {Aus}) (lot 1240)
topping the three-day sale with a bid of A$1.75-million from Yu
Long Investments. That toppled the A$1.7-million commanded
by Nurse Kitchen (NZ) (Savabeel {Aus}) during Tuesday=s opening
session.
With two mares bringing seven figures on Thursday, the
cumulative gross for 711 sold reached a record A$105,530,000.
The clearance rate finished at 83.5% compared to 82% last year
when 178 fewer horses were offered and 155 fewer sold. The
average was up 10.5% to A$148,425, while the median climbed
14.3% to A$80,000. Thirty-seven were sold for a half-million or
more compared to 26 last year. "The overall figures for the sale
are just stunning," Magic Millions Managing Director Vin Cox
said. Cont. in Worldwide News p12

Nineteen Set For Investec Derby Cont. from p1
Drawn favourably in seven and four, respectively, the former is
charged with the responsibility of following in the footsteps of
fellow Anthony Oppenheimer-owned and bred Golden Horn
(GB) (Cape Cross {Ire}). While Cracksman lacks vital conditioning
at the racecourse, having been forced to swerve the G2 Dante S.
due to the downpours at York, he did beat that contest=s winner
Permian (Ire) (Teofilo {Ire}) in the Investec Derby Trial over 10
furlongs here on Apr. 26 and looked as if this extra trip would
play to his strengths.
Oppenheimer is cautiously optimistic as he ponders a second
blue riband in three years. ACracksman is a lovely, laid-back
horse, but he=s quite different to Golden Horn,@ he said. AGolden
Horn had an awful lot of speed and John Gosden always felt he
could have won the 2000 Guineas if he hadn=t been as immature
as a 2-year-old. This horse doesn=t have that speed. I just hope
he has enough at the end of the race on Saturday.@
Missing the Dante is a drawback to Cracksman=s chances and
leaves his owner-breeder in the dark as to his standing in this
year=s renewal. AJohn feels he=s improved considerably since he
last ran and his form looks good after the horse he beat at
Epsom won the Dante, but I can=t say I=m confident,@ he added.
AJohn and Frankie are both very confident this horse will stay as
he is so laid-back, but he does need to improve a great deal. I
can=t see him finishing any better than third or fourth myself,
but I wasn=t confident about Golden Horn winning the Derby,
either, as I didn=t think he=d stay.@ Cont. p3

Nineteen Set For Investec Derby Cont.
Whereas John Gosden understands the thrill of winning this
prize, fellow trainer Martyn Meade is a relative novice in this
type of arena, but in Eminent he has a colt with all the main
credentials to provide a landmark success. He lined up for the
G1 2000 Guineas one of the leading protagonists after beating
the subsequent G1 Poule d=Essai des Poulains third Rivet (Ire)
(Fastnet Rock {Aus}) and the Dante runner-up Benbatl (GB)
(Dubawi {Ire}) in the G3 Craven S. at Newmarket on Apr. 20 only
to finish sixth in that May 6 mile Classic. As his second dam
Quarter Moon (Ire) (Sadler=s Wells) was runner-up in the 2002
Oaks, Sir Peter Vela=s bay is more likely to thrive in this test than
one which favoured the speed horses over a mile, and he
impressed with his spin at the ABreakfast With the Stars@
morning.
AIt=s a big responsibility and a privilege having him, but that is
what it is all about, that is what you work towards--having a
horse that has got a chance in the Derby,@ Meade commented.
AAt this stage, it is just another horse race and I have got to get
him there in good nick to do himself justice. After that, the
realisation of what it=s all about might just kick in.@
Meade=s sense of pressure is intensified by the weight of
expectation placed on Eminent by his famed sire. AThere is a
huge hype about the Frankel factor. While there are lots of them
about and lots of good ones, it would be quite nice to have the
first one to win a British Classic,@ he added. AI think his run in the
Guineas was down to a combination of factors. He had to have
pace, as he doesn=t quicken because he is not an out-and-out
miler. When Jim [Crowley] realised there was no pace on it was
a bit late to do anything and he was stuck behind other horses
and he had to pull out and make a sprint of it. Secondly, it
maybe came a bit quick and thirdly he would have liked a little
bit of cut in the ground to let himself down a bit in that final
furlong.@ Of his recent Epsom exercise, Meade continued, AThe
idea of going there was to get him used to the track going round
the bend and down the hill and then quicken away a little bit up
the straight,@ he said. AIn the end he did some pretty good times.
We had this satellite thing on him and he was clocking over 40
miles per hour for the last three furlongs. When you watched
him, it didn=t look like he was moving much at all. The great
thing about that was he was hard on the bit all the way through
and Jim took time to pull him up. Jim was really pleased how he
came into the top of hill, changed legs and was always on the
right lead all the way down. He coped with the downhill bit and
was perfectly balanced. He never had the slightest worry about
him.@

Nineteen Set For Investec Derby Cont.
Only two recent winners have overcome a draw higher than
10 and they were the Agood things@ Australia (GB) in 12 and
Authorized (Ire) in 14. Joseph O=Brien partnered the former and
also Camelot (GB) and bids to emulate Harry Wragg in becoming
the first since 1961 to ride and train a blue riband hero. Lloyd
Williams=s Rekindling (GB) (High Chaparral {Ire}) is his
representative and he beat Douglas Macarthur (Ire) (Galileo
{Ire}) and Capri in Leopardstown=s G3 Ballysax S. over 10
furlongs on Apr. 8 prior to finishing third in the Dante.
AI=ve never really thought about creating history or anything
like that, to be honest,@ Joseph said. AWhen you train racehorses
it=s a 24-7 job, you don=t really get much time to think of things
like that. When you have a horse like him who has won a trial in
Ireland and run well in traditionally the best trial in England, you
have to have a go at the Derby. You never know how many
times in your career you will have a legitimate Derby horse, you
might not get one again.@
O=Brien continued, AOne thing Rekindling has in his favour is
experience. On reflection, I thought our lad ran a good race at
York. He was staying on again and did well to finish as well as he
did because he didn=t like the ground. At the moment there is no
stand-out contender and you wouldn=t be surprised if there was
a 20-1 winner, but you can guarantee after the race there=ll be
[a standout]. Something will come out of the woodwork. This
could be the year for a surprise and if it=s ours, we=ll be
delighted.@
Diore Lia Back In The Mix... The sensational story of Derby entrant Diore Lia (Ire) (Yeats
{Ire}) took another turn on Thursday morning when it was
revealed that jockey Paddy Pilley will take over the reins on the
1000-1, 52-rated filly. Diore Lia was paid up for the Derby by
owner-breeer Richard Aylward in order to draw attention to and
aid in his fundraising efforts for the Great Ormond Street
Hospital, but Aylward told Racing Post late on Wednesday that
the filly would not run after the BHA announced one-time
winning apprentice rider Gina Mangan would not be permitted
to take the ride, citing safety reasons due to her inexperience.
Diore Lia stayed engaged, however, on Thursday morning with
Pilley, a five-pound claimer retained to Roger Charlton, set to
take the ride.
"The horse is declared to run," Aylward told Racing Post on
Thursday. "How could I stop the horse running when there have
been donations coming from America? The charity is the
number one. That's why I started this over a year ago. They are
not stopping us running over this."
TENDING THE GARDEN Jim Joel once described Sir Henry Cecil as having Agreen fingers
with horses@ and with Aidan O=Brien sitting just two short of that
late trainer=s tally of eight successes in Epsom=s G1 Investec
Oaks, it is fair to say that he also has a flair for this particular
type of horticulture. In Rhododendron (Ire) (Galileo {Ire}), the
master of Ballydoyle has a hot favourite for Friday=s race with
sound credentials for extending his record and providing a third
straight success. So impressive when powering to an emphatic
win in the G1 Fillies= Mile at Newmarket in October, Susan
Magnier=s colourbearer was unlucky not to finish much closer to
her rapidly-progressive stablemate Winter (Ire) (Galileo {Ire}) in
the G1 1000 Guineas back over that course and distance last
time on May 7. Cont. p5

Despite descending from the fast Cassandra Go (Ire) (Indian
Ridge {Ire}), Rhododendron=s dam Halfway To Heaven (Ire)
(Pivotal {GB}) stayed well enough to win the G1 Nassau S. over a
mile-and-a-quarter and her progeny have so far all seen out a
mile-and-a-half. AWe were very happy with Rhododendron in
the Guineas,@ Aidan O=Brien commented. AShe was coming
home really well that day. Everything has been fine with her
since.@
AShe is a filly we always thought would stay much further than
a mile,@ O=Brien noted. AObviously she=s up to a mile-and-a-half.
She seemed to get a mile well as a 2-year-old in the Fillies= Mile
at Newmarket.@
Of another of his three charges, Alluringly (Ire) (Fastnet Rock
{Aus}), O=Brien added, AAlluringly ran a great race at Chester. We
were delighted with her run. She was a little bit raw and a little
bit green, but she finished out the race very well.@
Khalid Abdullah enjoyed glory here 20 years ago courtesy of
Reams of Verse (Nureyev) and has two live contenders in the
Listed Cheshire Oaks winner Enable (GB) (Nathaniel {Ire}) and
Listed Haras de Bouquetot Fillies= Trial S. scorer Natavia (GB)
(Nathaniel {Ire}). The former beat Rhododendron=s stablemate
Alluringly (Fastnet Rock {Aus}) in that May 10 trial at Chester,
while Natavia was impressive when scoring by 3 3/4 lengths on
rain-deadened ground at Newbury 10 days later. Both are
unexposed fillies bred to be something potentially special and
Enable=s jockey Frankie Dettori is full of enthusiasm. AShe
surprised me at Chester,@ he said. AWhat she showed me at
Chester was very good--she whizzed round that turn like a
greyhound. For a staying filly, she showed a good turn of foot.
I=m very excited about her and I think she=s going to run a
decent race. The favourite comes with all the best credentials,
but I think Enable will do well.@
Along with Enable, >TDN Rising Star= Coronet (GB) (Dubawi
{Ire}) represents the John Gosden stable and Denford Stud=s
homebred has increasingly strong claims on the formbook.
Having beaten subsequent Derby trial winners Cunco (Ire)
(Frankel {GB}) and Permian (Ire) (Teofilo {Ire}) and also
Ballydoyle=s smart Wings of Eagles (Fr) (Pour Moi {Ire}) in
Newmarket=s Listed Zetland S. over 10 furlongs in October, she
returned to be third to >TDN Rising Star= Sobetsu (GB) (Dubawi
{Ire}) in the G1 Prix Saint-Alary over that trip at Deauville on
May 14. A half-sister to the G1 St Leger runner-up Midas Touch
(GB) (Galileo {Ire}) out of a mare that stayed this trip and
further, the trip will pose no problem for Coronet.
AShe came from a long way back in the Prix Saint-Alary to
snatch third and has come on a lot for that race,@ trainer John
Gosden said. AShe=s been looking to run over a mile-and-a-half.
She=s very much that type of filly and the trip will suit her very
well. It=s a quality Oaks.@
Cliveden Stud=s colours were seen in triumph around here with
Reference Point (GB) in the Derby 30 years ago and they are
sported in this race by Horseplay (GB) (Cape Cross {Ire}). Like
another daughter of that sire to excel, Ouija Board (GB), the
Andrew Balding trainee won the Listed Pretty Polly S. at
Newmarket last time on May 7 and holds the re-opposing Isabel
de Urbina (Ire) (Lope de Vega {Ire}) on that form.
AHorseplay is going to need to step up, but her homework has
always been good and she=s improved again since her win at
Newmarket,@ Balding commented. AThe dam=s side of her
pedigree is all stamina and Cape Cross, her sire, has a good
record with his Epsom Classic runners so on breeding she has
plenty going for her.@

Normandy Farm=s Daddys Lil Darling (Scat Daddy) is into
unknown territory after seconds in Keeneland=s GI Ashland S. on
Apr. 8 and the GI Kentucky Oaks at Churchill Downs on May 5,
but trainer Kenny McPeek is bullish about her condition.
AShe=s knocked on the door in these races and everything
seems to be coming together,@ he said. AShe had a real good
gallop on Friday, looks as strong as I=ve ever seen her and she=s
locked and loaded. This seed was planted a long time ago when I
walked the track in 2003 and this filly is prepared for it. She=s
going to get the trip and handle the surface fine and I=m
confident she=ll run well.@
FLEET OF FOOT
If his win in last year=s G1 King George VI and Queen Elizabeth
S. represented a breakthrough for Highland Reel (Ire) (Galileo
{Ire}), his tour de force in the GI Breeders= Cup Turf was
confirmation that he has become a cast-iron top-flight
performer for a Ballydoyle stable which holds the record of
seven winners in Epsom=s G1 Investec Coronation Cup. Joined by
his luckless brother Idaho (Ire) (Galileo {Ire}) and US Army
Ranger (Ire) (Galileo {Ire}) in Friday=s edition, he leads a strong
challenge as he tackles these unique contours for the first time.
His manner of dictating from the front may well be ideal for this
track and he will enjoy this ground more than the yielding
surface he encountered when a disappointing last of seven in
the G1 Dubai Sheema Classic at Meydan on Mar. 25. Idaho, who
stumbled and unseated Seamie Heffernan when favourite for
the G1 St Leger at Doncaster in September before finishing fifth
after a slow start in the GI Canadian International at Woodbine
the following month, is held in high regard by his trainer.
AWe=ve always thought Idaho would get to the same level as
Highland Reel,@ said O=Brien. APhysically, maybe he=s a bit bigger
and stronger than him. Things haven=t always fallen for him--
unusual things have happened, like what happened in the St
Leger. We think he=s progressing all the time and will progress
through the year.@
John Gosden is supplying some chief opposition to Ballydoyle
throughout the weekend and he puts forward George
Strawbridge=s Journey (GB) (Dubawi {Ire}) here. Last seen
winning Ascot=s G1 G1 QIPCO British Champions Fillies & Mares
S. over this trip by upwards of four lengths from the Group and
Grade 1 winners Speedy Boarding (GB) (Shamardal) and Queen=s
Trust (GB) (Dansili {GB}), she would prefer some ease in the
ground.
AWe=ve been pointing her towards this race for some time and
she worked nicely on Sunday,@ her trainer said. AWe are very
happy with her, but I think she will come on a lot for the race. It
looks a good version of the race and she will appreciate any rain
that comes. She handles most ground, but I think she enjoys a
little bit of give. Track-wise, we will find out on the day. You
don=t really know how they are going to handle it until they race
around there.@
Godolphin have three engaged headed by last year=s G1
Eclipse S. winner Hawkbill (Kitten=s Joy), who was impressive at
this trip when successful in the G3 Aston Park S. at Newbury on
May 20. Fellow Charlie Appleby trainee Frontiersman (GB)
(Dubawi {Ire}) has yet to be campaigned in black-type company,
so it is significant that the son of Ouija Board (GB) (Cape Cross
{Ire}) has been supplemented.
AWe=ve declared the pair of them and as long as it=s genuine
good ground, all being well, Hawkbill will take his chance,@
Appleby commented. AIf it dried out more than people are
expecting, we might have to have a rethink, but he=s been in
good form since Newbury and if conditions are right he=s
capable of running a big race. It=s obviously a big step up for
Frontiersman, but he=s working really well at home. If he
translates what he=s doing on a morning to the race he could be
bang there.@
RYAN YARD QUARANTINED FOR EHV Trainer Kevin Ryan=s North Yorkshire yard has been
temporarily quarantined after a horse in his care tested positive
for Equine Herpesvirus (EHV-1). The outbreak has thus far been
isolated to the one case, but the stables of Bryan Smart and
Michael Herrington have also been quarantined as a safety
measure due to their close proximity to Ryan=s. Ryan withdrew
three runners on Thursday while Smart and Herrington
scratched horses on Thursday and Friday. Cont. p7

Ryan Yard Quarantined for EHV Cont.
David Sykes, director of equine health and welfare for the
British Horseracing Authority, said, "Cases of the neurological
form of EHV-1 are occasional and, while the disease can be
extremely serious for the affected horses, with proper
surveillance and disease control the virus can usually be
effectively contained. While the risk of the virus being
transmitted in a controlled raceday environment is relatively
small, it is in theory possible that horses from the yard in
question may have been infectious some time before the
disease was diagnosed. For this reason we have taken measures
to alert trainers, as well as racecourses and veterinary surgeons,
to be vigilant to the clinical signs. The decision to close the
further yards is based on the identification of risk factors,
namely the proximity of yards and the sharing of horse boxes.
These measures have been taken as a precaution, with the
safety of the horse population very much in mind."
Trainer Jean-Claude Rouget was the subject of an EHV
quarantine in mid-April, with two of the 57 horses in his Pau
stable dying of the disease.
GODOLPHIN BUYS HARRY ANGEL Godolphin has purchased Saturday=s G2 Sandy Lane S. winner
Harry Angel (Ire) (Dark Angel {Ire}) and will keep the 3-year-old
colt in training with Clive Cox. Harry Angel broke his maiden at
second asking in the G2 Mill Reef S. at two, and finished second
to Godolphin=s >TDN Rising Star= Blue Point (Ire) (Shamardal) in
the May 17 G3 Pavilion S. before his 4 1/2-length Sandy Lane
score.
John Ferguson, Godolphin's chief executive and racing
manager, said, "Harry Angel is one of the most brilliant young
horses in training and we are delighted to have purchased him.
Not only is he a fantastic prospect for all the major Group 1
sprints, being a son of Dark Angel he also has the added
attraction of being a potential stallion. We are also excited
about having another top horse with Clive Cox, whose expertise
and reputation is second to none."

FETHARD HORSE COUNTRY EXPERIENCE
MUSEUM OPEN The Fethard Horse Country Experience museum, located in
County Tipperary, Ireland, was officially opened by Minister with
Responsibility for Defence, Paul Kehoe TD and Lord Lloyd
Webber on Tuesday, May 30. A €1.6-million investment, the
museum--developed by Event Communications in the town=s
400-year old Tholsel building (town hall)--will allow the town to
be a key destination in Ireland=s Ancient East, the tourism
initiative launched last year by Failte Ireland.
Nearby Coolmore Stud, former home of Sadler=s Wells
(Northern Dancer), a 14-time champion sire in Great Britain and
Ireland, has also been a contributor to the museum, with that
stallion=s skeleton on display in one of the exhibits.
Supported by Failte Ireland and receiving €198,000 in funding,
from the >New ideas in Ancient Spaces= Capital Grants Scheme
for attractions within Ireland=s Ancient East Initiative, the project
also received funding from the Tipperary County Council, Leader
Programme, the Magnier family and private donors. The
trustees of the Andrew Lloyd Webber Foundation awarded a
one-off grant towards the employment of a curator for the
museum, who will manage the contents of the Fethard Horse
Country Experience.
The hours of operation for the Fethard Horse Country
Experience will be Wednesday-Sunday from 10:00 a.m. to 4:00
p.m. local time. Addmission will start at €5.00 until Aug. 31,
before rising to €7.50 thereafter.

OCTOBER SALE CRITERIUM PURSE RAISED The purse for the Sept. 30 Haras de Bouquetot - Criterium
d=Octobre for graduates of Arqana=s October Yearling Sale will
be i274,000, up from the initially announced i250,000. The
purse for the one-mile race at Chantilly to open Arc weekend
was raised when 210 horses paid up for the third confirmation
stage on May 31, more than originally expected. The purse will
be further boosted by the i500 entry fee paid by the
connections of the final field, of which the maximum is 16.
In addition to purse money, the breeder of the winner of the
race will receive a nomination to Shalaa (Ire); the second a
nomination to Olympic Glory (Ire); and the third to Style
Vendome (Fr). All stand at Haras de Bouquetot, the race=s title
sponsor.

Cox continued, "We're sitting on an average of over
A$148,000, a gross of A$105.5-million and a clearance rate of
83.5%--if you had told me that a month ago I would have looked
at you like you had four heads."
"It's just a spectacular result for all those who participated,@
Cox added. AThere was a lot of international competition on
horses. Obviously the domestic market was very strong on the
back of the huge year of results from the yearling sales around
the country. The results speak volumes for the Australian
industry generally and I'm just so very proud of the Magic
Millions team. We threw a lot more horses onto every session
and our auctioneers stepped up and sold at a quicker rate and as
a result we got through the days a lot earlier than we
anticipated. It was a big effort from everyone and I'm just so
proud of everything that has happened.@
The 6-year-old Gregers, who contested the Blue Diamond at
two before winning the G2 Thousand Guineas Prelude at three
and finishing third in the G1 Thousand Guineas, added further
placings in the G1 Robert Sangster Classic and G1 William Hill
Classic at three and four. The half-sister to G3 Sportingbet S.
winner Girl Guide (Aus) (Churchill Downs {Aus}) was sold in foal
to Written Tycoon (Aus) by Burke Bloodstock. G1 Coolmore
Classic winner Ofcourseican (Aus) (Mossman {Aus}) and South
Africa=s G1 Queen=s Plate winner Gimmethegreenlight (Aus)
(More Than Ready) appear under the second dam.
Victorian-based bloodstock agent Sheamus Mills, speaking on
behalf of Yu Long=s Yousheng Zhang after outbidding
Arrowfield=s Jon Freyer acting on behalf of Katsumi Yoshida,
said, "It's a family that has really been developing over the last
10 years or so and Mr. Zhang just loves the family. She was his
favourite mare in the sale--he'd obviously missed out on a
couple [of high profile mares]. There was a push there from
Arrowfield to get her also." Cont. p13

Best For Last at Broodmare Sale Cont.
"These mares with a record like hers, especially fast mares,
good-looking young mares, are hard to get," Mills added. "She's
a rare offering."
Former part-owner Colin McKenna was on-hand for the sale
with his wife Janice, and they were celebrating a good week
after another mare they were involved in, Petits Filous (Aus)
(Street Boss), made A$1.15-million on day one.
"We didn't think she would quite make that," an emotional
McKenna said. "It's a very big price. We don't like selling them
but sometimes you have to sell them--it's not about the money,
it's just they get too valuable walking around at home."
One additional mare reached seven figures late in the day on
Thursday and at A$1.6-million, was good enough for the third-
highest price of the sale. That was Widden Stud=s Polska (Aus)
(Encosta de Lago {Aus}) (lot 1504), the 9-year-old dam of Group
2 winners Catch A Fire (Aus) (Sebring {Aus}) and Seaburge (Aus)
(Sebring {Aus}) who was offered in foal again to Widden resident
Sebring. Signing the ticket was the New Zealand-based Dean
Hawthorne, who has been busy buying mares at the top of the
market this week.
"We waited all day for her," Hawthorne said. "We've got a
really international market, we just decided we have to buy
these really good mares. These types of mares don't come along
very often. We're happy to get her."
"What a gorgeous mare she is," Hawthorne added. "You can
see why her foals run. We are amping up the quality in our
broodmare band. You have to pay for these types of mares. It's
an international market and you've got to put the gloves on."
The result was a homerun for Polska=s former owner, local
businessman David Henderson.
"We're very, very excited with that," Henderson said. "It's a
great result. She's been an excellent mare for me. It's sad to see
her go but there's economics in this business and I thought it
was the right time to put her on the market. The result was
above expectations.@
Also among Hawthorne=s Thursday haul was the A$800,000
Zurella (NZ) (Zabeel {NZ}) (lot 1696), three times a group winner
and Classic-placed and from the family of champion racehorse
and sire Lonhro (Aus) (Octagonal {NZ}). The 8-year-old was sold
in-foal to first-season covering sire Vancouver (Aus), who also
had the mare Blueberry Hill (Aus) (Myboycharlie {Ire}) reach
A$600,000 on Wednesday.
Agent James Harron signed for the only other mare to surpass
half a million on Thursday: Dormello Stud=s Martimo (NZ) (Pins
{Aus}) (lot 1393), a 4-year-old stakes winner carrying her first
foal, by Tavistock (NZ).
The Dubai-based investment company Phoenix Thoroughbreds
has been busy at the broodmare sale this week, and its Thursday
haul included Lovetorn (Giant=s Causeway) (lot 1360) in-foal to
Fastnet Rock (Aus) for A$450,000; Madam Belle (Rock Hard
Ten) (lot 1376) in foal to I Am Invincible (Aus) for A$425,000;
and a pair for A$400,000: Newgate=s Lindisfarne (City Zip) in foal
to Tapit, and Lady Oracle (GB) (Medaglia d=Oro) in foal to Not A
Single Doubt. Six of the seven mares offered in foal to American
champion sire Tapit sold for an average of A$290,000.
Five mares were offered in foal to Frankel (GB), and four sold
for an average of A$365,000. Three of the four were bought by
Paul Willetts Bloodstock.
The National Broodmare sale wraps up with a single-session

>TART= ADDS SOME BITE TO OAKS Despite being moved from Eagle Farm to Doomben and seeing
its distance chopped from 2400 metres to 2200 metres, the
A$500,000 G1 Queensland Oaks sees a full field of 16 line up,
plus three emergencies, on Saturday. Trainer Chris Waller sends
out seven runners, among them the $3.30 favourite Egg Tart
(Aus) (Sebring {Aus}). The Hermitage Syndicate colourbearer has
been on a bit of a tear of late, rolling through five straight wins
since breaking her maiden last November. A top-level victory
went her way last out by a slim margin in the G1 Schweppes
Oaks stepping up to 2010 metres at Morphettville on May 6. Egg
Tart ran fifth in a 1030-metre barrier trial on May 26.
Also representing Waller is $7.00 shot Dawn Wall (Aus)
(Fastnet Rock {Aus}). The Coolmore and Flaxman Stables runner
saluted in Kembla Grange=s G3 Arrowfield Kembla Classic going a
mile on Mar. 10, but was less effective when sixth in the heavy
going of the 2000-metre G1 Vinery Stud S. at Rosehill on Mar.
25. Following two barrier trials, the Aug. 30-foaled bay returned
in fine shape, scoring in good going in the Listed Gold Coast
Bracelet S. with Hugh Bowman aboard on May 6.
The consistent Kenedna (Aus) (Not a Single Doubt {Aus}) was
just touched off by Egg Tart in the Schweppes Oaks on May 6,
but she is well seasoned and should be up for this first try
beyond 2000 meters. The Darren Weir trainee landed the May
20 G2 The Magic Millions Roses and she is second choice
Saturday at $4.40. Earlier in the campaign, Kenedna earned wins
in the Listed Laelia S. at Morphettville on Apr. 8 and in the 1800-
metre G3 Auraria S. there later that month.
AIt probably helps her I would say because she=s won there and
instead of it being 2400m, it=s 2200m which is not a massive
step,@ Weir told Racing.com of the venue change for his filly. The
only concern I would have is that Johnny [Allen] said that she
never really handled the track at all the other day, even though
she won. But providing it=s not too wet, I=m looking at it as a plus
for her.@
O=SHEA TO REUNITE WITH MACDONALD John O=Shea will reestablish ties with jockey James MacDonald
when the rider=s 18-month ban expires next May, the trainer
told Sky Sports Radio. MacDonald was banned for placing a
A$1,000 bet on future Group 1 winner Astern (Aus) (Medaglia
d=Oro) when he rode him to win on debut in December of 2015
and has twice failed in appeal to have the ban overturned. A
third appeal is currently at the supreme court. Cont. p15

O=Shea to Reunite With MacDonald Cont.
MacDonald and O=Shea worked closely together in their
former roles with Godolphin, MacDonald as retained rider prior
to his suspension and O=Shea as head trainer. O=Shea resigned
from the role in April and will be replaced in the coming weeks
by James Cummings. O=Shea will return to Randwick, where he
previously trained, and open a public stable.
"My goal is to have a stable strong enough that warrants
James and keeps him busy on his return," O'Shea told Sky Sports
Radio. "One of the things that inspired me the most was to
make sure I could look after him the best I could and provide
him with a significant amount of horses to keep him busy."
O=Shea said he stepped back from his Godolphin role to spend
more time with his family.
"I've got a young daughter; I've never seen her play sport," he
said. "Since I've been out, I've been to all her soccer matches
and for me you can't get that back. [My] three other boys, to go
to all of their games every Saturday since I've been out is
something I cherish."
GOLD COAST COURSE COINED AQUIS PARK The Gold Coast Turf Club has entered into a three-year
partnership with Queensland-based Aquis Farm that includes
the Gold Coast racecourse being re-named Aquis Park from Aug.
1 and the introduction of night racing, according to
Racenet.com.au.
Gold Coast Turf Club Chief Executive Steve Lines told Racenet
that the partnership will involve several marketing initiatives,
including night racing.
The Gold Coast=s greatest day of racing is the annual at A$10-
million Magic Millions Raceday in January, which has
traditionally been conducted on the Saturday afternoon prior to
selling across the street at the Magic Millions complex in the
evening.
